View Full Version : We need a Simon Katich!!!

We've all seen Simon Katich over the past couple of days take the role of Mr Dependable for Australia. He has looked completely solid whilst wickets have been falling around him. How many times have we seen him play and miss or edge? I have counted about 5 times in the 231 balls he's faced so far (could be more, but you get the picture). Out of these 5 times, he has survived 4 great balls and got out to one beauty bowled by asif. He has clearly been the difference in this match.
Why has he been so untroubled in great bowling conditions? Some may say it's because of the position he gets into, some may say it's his talent, but I believe there's another major factor leading to his success because even the likes of the talented Ponting and Clarke have struggled and we saw the result when umar akmal moved accross his stumps.
This major factor is his him being a specialist test batsman. His last odi's and int t20's were way back in 2006. As a result, his temperement for tests has been growing and growing over time. Test cricket is all about surviving the best balls and scoring off the bad balls. His developed concentration level has allowed him to do exactly this.
By asking for a Simon Katich I'm not asking for a batsman who moves accross his stumps or who is left handed, I'm asking for someone who we can use specifically in tests consistently. Imran farhat has played too much limited overs cricket to be used now as a test specialist, but I feel we have wasted the talents of players like Asim Kamal and Yasir Hameed, who could have taken up this role.

Fawad Alam
He is left handed and moves across the wkts and has triple 100 in FC and a test 100 on debut.
Only thing he does not have are connections and controversies.

In this match so far Butt has done a Katich for Pakistan. Lets see if Butt can score a 50 again in the second inning (has to if Pakistan are to fight)

Yasir is back, and wasted his opportunity himself (although was cut away too quickly), Asim Kamal is one of the very talented yet lost Pakistani players of the last decade (however, in any case, he batted at 6, and I think he would have struggled in the top order). Katich, on the basis of this performance, is a criminally underrated player.
such a brilliant cricketer, I for one really enjoy his batting...if our batsmen had even a quarter of his mental strength, they would be world beaters right now.

Oh come on there can't be another Lala even the cloning machine will stop to work when it will know that Lala is being discussed. So stick to the plan and kidnap Katich. :D

Not just the balls, but a pitch, a bat and a spectator. The list is a long one my friend. ;-)

A very annoying batter. I hate the way he shuffles across his stumps. Umar Gul should try a quick leg stump yorker in the morning. Salman played just as good today.

We have one in the making. His name is Robert Paulson. I mean, his name is Fawad Alam. Probably was standing next to YK during the latters most recent row with Ijaz Butt hence also qualifies for a test match restraining order from the PCB.

We don't need a katich we need our players to try to play their natural game.
If the Akmals and Farhat had tried to play their natural game and gone for their shots. We would not be in this situation. In such a low scoring game a quickfire 20-30 would have put pressure on Aussies and made their bowlers try something else like clarke did for them.

Remember Asim Kamal and how everybody wanted him dropped because he didn't hit sixes? That's why we have to constantly rotate between the likes of Nazir, Farhat, Hameed and co instead of producing proper batsmen

I would say we need a Katich, Watson, Clarke, Ponting, Hussey. We are just too inexperienced in our batting. We really need Akmal, Alam, Amin, Ali, Yasin to step up otherwise we will still be looking for new players in 4-5 years time.

Katich has a style which nullifies the effectiveness of the new ball quite successfully. It's a bit misleading to say he is successful because he is a specialist batsman, as we have seen other Aussie batsmen are also specialists but have struggled in these conditions.
What he has done is stay positive and look to score runs, playing shots off his stumps in order to get runs. We could learn from that maybe. Afridi got slaughtered for going on the attack but at least he didn't look like a sacrificial lamb waiting to be put out of his misery.

Our Simon Katich is sitting in Pakistan. He made 168 on Test debut on a spot he's never played before. His team mates struggled against the attack but he didnt. He was not given a chance in the tour down under. He is not exactly T20 material but he can rotate the strike well but anyhow was selected in the T20 team but not given chances to play.
He is not even a reserve in the Test squad.
He's our Fawad Alam.

IMO you need batsmen of the style of Strauss and Collingwood, who can hang in and grind out crucial fifties in difficult conditions when the bowlers are on top.

He is disgraceful to watch but his own team must love him - just keeps making runs.
Annoys the hell out of me, probably annoys the hell out of bowlers. Akhtar, if he was fit enough for Test cricket, would have bowled well and dragged him across.

Strauss and Colly have got shots as well, though. Until Pakistan get some "boring" players, they will struggle in tests.

Not to mention England have some very fine strikers in Pieterson, Morgan, Kieswetter etc, so they can afford a couple of "boring" batsmen. The stupidity of some here ragging on other teams batsmen while we are struggling to make 150 is mind boggling. But not surprising.
