LONDON: Although the new-look Pakistan team is yet to show their real strength during the England tour, the counties here are eager to sign a couple of talented youngsters for the next season which starts in April, 2011.
Umar Akmal and Mohammad Aamer have become hotcakes for the counties and a number of counties have shown interest in hiring the duo.
It has been learnt from well-placed sources in the team that the Kent and Hampshire have approached Umar. “The counties have expressed a desire to hire Umar. They are interested to give him a longer contract. There are also others who want to hire the batsman,” one of the Pakistan players confirmed to ‘The News’ Thursday.
He said that Umar is yet to make up his mind as whether he will play for the county next season. “He is not sure at the moment whether he is interested in playing for the county. Umar is totally focussing on playing for the country and as such has no time to decide on his association with the counties,” the member of the team who requested anonymity said.
Though Umar flopped in the first innings of the on-going Test against Australia, his previous innings for Pakistan, especially in the limited overs competitions, have made him a favourite pick.
Pakistan have no apparent commitment until next summer and most of the players are interested in spending that lean period with counties in England.
Aamer is the other player who is being approached by the English counties. “There are more than one counties who are interested in hiring the young fast bowler. However, even Aamer is not certain whether he will get Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) permission to play for counties,” he said.
The PCB, in recent times, have shown reluctance in allowing the bowlers to play in the hectic county season for the fear of wear and tear. Usually batsmen get the NOC from PCB as they want them to get maximum exposure but as far as the bowlers are concerned, the board policy is a bit different.
In an interview with ‘The News’ soon after landing in England, Umar Gul also expressed his desire to play county cricket. “I am totally concentrating on national team cricket. However, after spending the season with the national side, I will look for options and will try to scoop the best possible option.”
It has been learnt that majority of players interested to join the counties and are engaged in bargaining to get the best deal.
