Strauss also confirmed that England had followed their opponents' lead by donating to the Pakistan flood relief effort.

"We're donating a proportion of our match fee to the fund," he said.

"It's a humanitarian catastrophe out there and we're trying to help as much as we can. The more people who do that the better."

Great stuff by them. Last paragraph on the site.

After a sluggish start, the world community eventually applied itself to the task of helping a distressed nation and its suffering people.

However, cricket has been curiously quiet and its high time that changed. After all, Pakistan is part of the brotherhood. Cricket rose to the occasion when the tsunamis overwhelmed Sri Lanka on that fateful Boxing Day.

In a trice a fund raising match was organised and staged before a packed house in Melbourne. All the leading players gave their services willingly. It was a warm occasion enjoyed by all parties. Nothing lingers about that game except the atmosphere. Sport can reach beyond the mundane.

When pusillanimous Australians withdrew from a World Cup match due to be played in Colombo, the other countries in the region combined to play a compensatory exhibition game. Suddenly Indians and Pakistanis were cheerfully playing in the same side. By all accounts the gesture was appreciated. Here was sport accepting its role as a builder of bridges.

Yet little has been heard about cricket assisting the agonised in Pakistan. No word has been heard about a special match or fee donations or prize money being collected or IPL teams putting copper in the pot.

Apparently the topic has hardly been mentioned in commentary. Apart from the humanitarian aspect, it is a missed opportunity for cricket.

Pakistan is in disarray. Cricket is a victim of forces beyond its control. Years might pass before international teams are allowed back. At such times it is important to show solidarity. A smile can achieve more than a hundred scowls.

Every cricketing country ought to reconsider its response. Over the years Pakistan has contributed enormously to the game and it remains one of the powerhouses.

Numerous English clubs sign professionals from the Punjab. The national team has been considerably strengthened by settlers from Pakistan.

Australia has just added Usman Khawaja to its ranks. Now cricket needs to show Pakistan that it cares, and to that end ought to put its mind to staging relief matches to raise extra funds in this hour of need. Its not right to pick and choose between disasters.

Floods might not have as much impact as plane crashes, tsunamis or earthquakes but the result is the same. Nor can ancient and complex people be viewed solely through the prism of the Taliban.

It's time to be generous, time to organise something significant for suffering brethren in a far-off land.

Excellent gesture by the England team. Strauss is a class act as captain and it is good to see that players recognise that there are some things which are bigger than the game. :14::14::14:
