Thhay Ya Hote Thhhay?

This is getting to me now.I always believed that "hum college main parrteh thhay" was correct sentence.But over the years many ppl put a hote before thhay in this type of sentence.Last week I was with couple of urdu speaking guys from Karachi.We were talking about good old days and they used this parrteh hote thhay or jaate hote thhay good three/four times.

Now Mirza Ghalib Momo sahab meri isslah farmayyeh or put me out of my misery by saying I was right.

"parha kartay thay" ya "parhtay thay" are fine.

"parhtay hotay thay" sounds like a direct translation from Punjabi, because in Punjabi it's okay to say "parhday honday see". A bit strange then that it was Urdu-speaking guys saying this.

But over time things like these get used so much that they start to become part of the language, so as such they're not incorrect.

It's something I've only heard Punjabi-speakers say, surprised that your Urdu-speaking friends said it. It should be parhtay thay, not parhtay hotay thay.

Another thing I have picked up from Karachi wale is use of kara/kari instead of kia/ki.Asif iqbal and basit Ali use this frequently in their interviews.

Actually, I first heard of this novel usage from my friends from Lucknow and Kanpur and Old Delhi, the garh of Urdu speaking heritage in India!

Kara/kari, like meray ko/teray ko is NOT proper Urdu. But many people (who have their roots in UP) use these words.
In Karachi, usually people living in Malir, Lines Area (where Basit Ali lives or used to live) and a couple of other areas use these words.

Agreed but issue is some people put woh bhi kya din hotay hotay thay.Like Jaate hotay thay/parhtay hotay thay.Jonsa woh aale :inzi issue ka masla hai.
Oh that !! we have people of so many different background speaking Urdu with each other as it is the most common language and understood widely in Pakistan . so a lot of different things happened with Urdu

1) regional language influence over Urdu so it became more Pakistani
2)new slangs waghera bhi aa gaye
3)ghalat Urdu bhi acceptable ho gayi

Now when we hear somebody say "besti kharab ho gayi ; kitnay gantay ( ghuntay/hours ) ; dhai (dahi/yoghurt)" we know that person is from Punjab .

a lot of people say , takhat when its actually takht or sakhat (its sakht )

this is all acceptable but not necessarilly correct Urdu .. like the slangs people use in the West or the street language .. "yo sup ? " acceptable but not correct

That's a Hyderabadi / Gujju thing, I think. That, and kids say it, hehe.

In Karachi, usually people living in Malir, Lines Area (where Basit Ali lives or used to live) and a couple of other areas use these words.

I will argue that kara is the correct past tense usage of verb karna. Kia is a simplified form with limitations. Try to use it in present or future tense and you will have to go back to kar raha hoon or karunga.


PS: as for hote they, it is correct to say in its own right but to associate it with an action like ja rahe hote they or parh rahe hote they is only appropriate if you are using it in a past-continuous sense.
