View Full Version : Selections you have got wrong or Selectors decisions you have wrongly criticised...

Thought it would be interesting to see which players we have backed who have come into the side and not done the business...

Also thought it would be interesting to see which selection decision we criticised which have made us look silly...

I'm sure I have made loads myself... most recently I got the Razzaq one wrong for instance...

Although in hindsight now it might not have been a mistake I remember how annoyed I was about Salman Butt making the T20 World Cup squad...I thought the selectors decision was ridiculous but I was proved wrong...

In terms of players that I backed...I backed Amin during the Test series and that didnt pan out...heres hoping he does better and can prove me right at some point...

What blunders have you made personally and on what occasions have you not been justified in your anger at the selectors now that we can look back in hindsight?...

Was absolutely over Afridi but then he scored back to back fifties in the 09 T20 WC, and I had to eat my words and forgive him for all his past sins.

I hardly think there was any blunder ... guys gave it to selectors mostly for Imran Farhat and Misbah... and some (including myself) were questioning Hafeez.
I am sure all of us persist with our stance on the selectors for including Misbah and Farhat, and I still feel that Hafeez is not a solid player.

Everyone (including myself) thought Hafeez's selection was probably one of the worst decisions before England tour and now he is in everyone's WC squad.

I still believe he needs to perform more consistently as a batsman but he has done well enough to prove everyone wrong (for now...).

Everyone was shocked to see Shahzaib NOT being selected for T20s against South Africa and after just 2 T20s, everyone is wondering why was he selected.

I was calling for razzaq's head and rightly so because he hadn't score any 50s. Or 100s for a while...plus his bowling has been declining also..I ate my words today

This. Although I never rated Shahzaib

I had written off Afridi in 2006 when he averaged something like 8 with the bat and was expensive as a bowler. I was critical for his selection over Rehman for SA tour but he made a timely return to form :afridi

I really thought Amin would do better in England. I was disappointed but I still think he would have done well if he was out there in the middle with Yousuf.

I backed the selection of Kamran in tests until the tour of Australia in Dec/Jan and then I lost my patience and did a bit of stat search and realized how crap and overrated his batting truly is.

Hafeez so far... But still think his bowling will get spanked in a WC KO game...

I was almost getting ready to drop Abdul Razzaq

I really wanted to get Kamran Akmal out of the team, but now I think he is the best bet for ODIs, and T20s

I remember when Bob Woolmer told Kamran Akmal to open in ODI's, I was baffled, thinking he would struggle. Then I remember the next day he scored a century!

Afridi certainly proved me wrong in T20 World Cup 2009.

Have backed Hameed for a while, still do think he deserves another chance though.

Hafeez is proving me wrong at the moment...... I was his biggest critic!

BUT

He hasnt done enough to justify a permanent place yet! Enough to serve a run to show that he is consistent.

That position requires someone capable of scoring centuries!

Oh, and I never rated Shoaib Akhtar... Thought he was Sami-esque in that he was all pace and no brains as he got spanked a few times in ODI's...

I was very young then, though....

I'd love to see Hafeez become a permanent fixture. He is a very talented batsman but just likes to throw it away at crucial moments.

His bowling is very very very effective for a 'part-timer'.

I definitely think you can't blame the selectors at all for picking Hafeez, he had an outstanding domestic season last year so that was justified and hes proving it now as well.

As for Shahzaib, its similar in a sense, but somehow I don't see him succeeding at this level.

Poor selections include Imran Farhat and Mohammad Sami. There was no basis for selecting them yet they are well and truly part of the squads

EDIT: and I've alreadt accepted in the humble pie thread (which I manfully created myself) that I though Razzaq was more or less past it but his batting performances of late are forcing me to change my mind

Hafeez plays proper shots but ends up throwing it away due to what appear to be temperamental issues.

Shahzaib plays attempted slogs. Keyword: attempted.

I was once against Hafeez but I hope he continues to prove us doubters wrong.:hafeez
