LAHORE - In a major policy shift in the aftermath of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer's assassination by one of his security guards, the provincial government has begun proper screening and scrutiny of the officials of Elite Force to avoid any further untoward happening.
Well-placed sources revealed here on Friday that ten bearded personnel of Elite Force have been withdrawn from VVIP's security as the governor's killing sparked security concerns among the top politicians, particularly liberal and moderate ones.
Sources close to the Joint Investigations Team (JIT) probing into the assassination of Salmaan Taseer also disclosed to this reporter that the security agencies have arrested a suspect in connection with the on-going inquiry during a successful raid carried out in Sabzazaar area late on Wednesday night.
The suspect has been shifted to an unknown location for further interrogation, sources said, adding, there is a strong possibility that the suspect had links with Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, who gunned down Punjab Governor in the federal capital and later confessed the murder.
Sources also revealed that the investigators traced the suspect through the cellular phone of the killer as there were specific text messages on the handset of Qadri, an official of the Elite Force, established years ago to provide security cover to the VVIPs.
According to the police sources, a special team of the Elite Force comprising experienced officers have begun screening of the Elite Force officials in order to monitor their activities and religious leanings.
What do you guys think of this news?:inzi:mushy:saqi:moyo:anwar:amla

Oh NOW the effort, the screening and the police raids begin.
So if someone important like Salman Taseer is killed, suddenly maybe we should deal with the extremists ?
Why wasn't there proper screening before anyway ?
And since when does having a beard make you an extremist ?
The proper research and interview processes would have eliminated the extremist-sympathising officers from the loyal ones in the first place.

Whats the source? It seems to be very sensationalist because nowhere does it say "bearded men not to be part of security details"
Rubbish thread title mate thoroughly misleading. In fact its a downright lie.
It says they are screening them more and that those people that were removed due to failing this extra vetting, just so happened to have beards, they werent removed because of their beards.
This extra screening should have been done in the first place!

No who cares about 50 people killed in a Sufi Shrine, someone important has to die first before reviewing security.
Unbelievable. This is why the Army is responsible for state security and foreign policy. The government and police are incapable of managing the security arrangements for one politician.
Now the inquiries and raids have begun.Where were the raids and reports when the bomb blasts or shootings affected civilians ? Or when target killings were taking place ?

Yeah I agree with that this screening should be a basic requirement for Gods sake!

An extreme reaction to an extreme action, if true. Both are wrong. Not all bearded people are extremists. And those who are, will not think twice before shaving it as a necessity to do this twisted version of 'jihad'. Reminds me of the saying that the most dangerous religious extremists are those without beards.
Anyway, this action doesn't affect general public anyway. An elite was killed and as a result, the elite force is getting screened to secure other elites in future.

^Yaar MJ where in the article does it say that bearded cops will no longer be part of security details or that bearded cops have been banned from the Elite Force or something.

TBH wouldn't be surprising.

Not in the article, which is why I said 'if true'.
But knowing the mentality of our elite, I would not be surprised if that's the underlying criterion for kicking people out of the force. Anything else would require them to be intelligent people with hindsight which they clearly aren't.
Anyway, as I said, this doesn't affect general public anyway. Consider it as hiring and firing of servants going on in some posh palace of the ruling elite.

Lol razor sales are gonna go through the roof...
So the way to fight extremism is to ban bearded guys now...kudos to the government for its ability to alienate non extreme Muslims and kudos to them to helping to create some more...
I cant believe this is true...

Probably because theres no evidence to suggest that it is true, the thread title is a sensationalist lie.

So do people grow beards INSIDE their brains? My point is, if the screening is simply looking at someones face to see if they have a beard or not then the future "martyr" will simply shave it off !
Unless screening involves looking at "connected persons" of each policeman, this will mean nothing.
So questions like
1. Where did he go to school ?
2. Who are his friends?
3. Which mosque does he go to?
4. Telephone records [assuming all telephones owned by this person are declared to the Police]
5. What do his father, brother, uncles, cousins do? are they members of any party/religious group

This is a typical post-hoc policing approach. The positive is that the whole world follows the same approach so Pakistan is doing what many developed countries' police forces do. :ibutt

There's no point hasanb. Half of these people like to read sensationalist headlines then bang their heads against a wall a few times. The OP quite blatantly picked out one line in his article to create a thread title specifically for these types of people.

Regardless, I think that the basic idea of filtering people properly in forces as well as other important organizations is the need of the hour. The infiltration of this extreme mindset is quite deep now and it needs to be rooted out.

How about removing people who don't actually read the article?

The headline is sensationalist, but in a muslim country you cannot bar people from a particular employment if they are bearded, because it will hurt the religious sensibilities of many people.
I think better background checks should be put in place and regular follow up checks to make sure the person isnt being radicalized

Its sensationalist, it should say that 10 people were removed after extra vetting procedures, the fact that they had beards should not come to it because that was not the reason they were removed.
Nowhere does it say they were removed because of their beards, nor does it say anywhere that bearded cops will no longer give security to VVIP's. So while the article is sensationalist. The thread title is an absolute lie.

Ridiculous decision which isn't going to achieve anything nor going to make any VVIPs any safer than they are at the moment.
Anyone who has been radicalised to the extent where they are prepared to kill others and/or themselves isn't going to back out just because they have to shave off their beard.
As others have said...a proper system of background checks needs to be implemented. I know it's difficult in a country like Pakistan but it's the only solution.
