I have been hearing this a lot lately, from the commentators to the experts to the fans. Is he among the best bowlers around at the moment?

he is for sure the best pacer from subcontinent, at this moment (not counting asif and amir). i am talking about ODI and twenty20.

Umar Gul is a great LOI bowler. But in test matches he is mediocre and no wonder he averages in mid 30s> I dont rate fast bowlers who averages in 30s in test like Zaheer & Anderson.

he's been the best fast bowler of the tournament so far.

even if he is not the best, he is certainly one of the best pacers (top 3) from subcontinent.
i think gul is more effective than malinga, he has a better fitness and a better record against major teams.
zaheer is not in the same league as malinga and gul i think.
umar gul is a proven match winner, he can win a game by himself.

In ODIs and T20s he's very good, not so much in tests but still decent.
In terms of natural talent, he's one of the best fast bowlers going alongside Steyn.

I don't think it's much about talent because he has come a long way to be in this situation (unlike asif and amir)...and he has improved himself from when he first came. I think it's more of hard work rather than talent.

It's both. He always had all the tools for a fast bowler but could never produce them consistently, that has come with him working at it. Similarly, Steyn looked very promising when he first started but he wasn't so effective in that series against England in SA and was smashed around by Aus in some ODIs but he worked at it and came back completely different against NZ in SA.

My views on Gul when it comes to bowling with the OLD ball and the NEW ball :-

He is naturally talented and has been blessed to bowl with the old ball and the new ball - he has the ability to adapt to the conditions very quickly and change the approach of his bowling towards the batsmen which suits the pitch ideally - If he can show consistency and confidence constantly during games then there's no doubt that he's a unstoppable bowler and one of the best in today's cricket.

i like the fact gul barely gets injured. he has a decent pace too probably. malinga often gets injured if i am not wrong.

Not one of the best, but the best in this WC.
Overall, he is number 2, right after Steyn.

He's missed quite a few years of his career through back and knee problems.
Rarely gets injured? Definitely not
In my opinion he is a form guy. When he is going good he will be your main man and gets you lot of wickets but then he can have lean patches which extend for months and months and in those periods he is basically a passenger in the team.
Needs to be more consistent for longer periods of time

He is a big tournament player. Its funny how he gets dropped in the bilateral series but when we need him in T20 or WC, he is there to be counted.
