Assalamu Aleikum & Wannakammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm :D

How many Tamil speakers are there here? I have MANY Tamil friends and I am quite proficient in the language compared to other Pakistanis :ibutt

Anyway, now I am seriously looking to learn as much as possible :adnan Most likely NOT how to read and write, but at least so that I can converse with people.

I know 10-12 words/phrases by today. But first I wan't to know if there are any Tamils here? :murali

And how big a difference is it between Indian & Sri Lankan Tamil?

Peace out! Love you all :hafeez

Indian and Srilankan tamil differs in its slang and also some set of words used are completely unknown to the other side. Srilankan tamil has a better pure tamil vocabulary and Indian tamil is being influenced by other languages particulary sanskrit.

Never knew that there is a thread existing on Tamil.

I am Tamilian and the Tamil that we speak n use here in Tamilnadu is VASTLY different from Sri Lankan ones. As MIB rightly pointed out Slang, Accent, and Words are very different between the Tamils (Indian ones n Sri Lankan ones).

Since the OP lives in Norway (I guess he is) I expect him to have mainly Sri Lankan Tamil friends.BTW, Nordic countries have majority Tamils from Sri Lanka.

As a language Tamil is one of the oldest in the world with classical status to it (older than any other South Indian Languages and equivalent to Hindi in terms of Origin).

Good to see PPers discussing these kind culture/linguistics related topics, I love PP :19:

Very true. I am from Northern Tamilnadu and my accent, diction and use of certain words are very different from Central n Southern Tamilnadu.

But most of the movies made from Tamilnadu has Northern Tamilnadu accent (recent trend is Southern Accent - Madurai Lingo)

BTW, Saajid are you Tamil as well?

Cool :)

TBH, In the last 15 years or so Taminglish (Combination of Tamil n English) is the unofficial spoken language in most of the Tamil movies.

I am yet to see Vaanam, but heard from friends that its a decent movie. Love the Yuvan Shankar Raja's music in that film (especially Vaanam and Evandi Unna Peththaan songs).

I m not so advanced but worth a try it's not exact

"Neenga ready avunga nalla padum solli tharen"
You get ready I ll teach you a lesson
The pronunciation would be like anyyyy without the "a" sound And just like "the" say ghe Then it will become neenga "ny-ghe"
Ready is English so don't need
Avunga pronunciation would be "ah vu ghe"
Nalla - would be nhall like you say dhall tell nhall and add le. Nhall-le
Padum - That should sound like par dum Par-dum
Solli -So and Lee. Equals solli. So-Lee (remember Brett Lee instead of brett say ,so Lee )
Tharen . Ta and ren

Avid,

Can you teach me some words commonly used while talking to autowallahs? The moment you speak in English they look to fleece you.

This one time, me and a Punjabi friends wee coming back to our college campus from outside. The auto driver acted like he did not understand a word of English or Hindi and it was very hard for us to bargain. So, whilst inside the campus, my friend was swearing at the auto-driver in Hindi and the guy is like - Sir, aapka campus aa gaya to aap mujhe gaali dene lage?

This one time, me and a Punjabi friends wee coming back to our college campus from outside. The auto driver acted like he did not understand a word of English or Hindi and it was very hard for us to bargain. So, whilst inside the campus, my friend was swearing at the auto-driver in Hindi and the guy is like - Sir, aapka campus aa gaya to aap mujhe gaali dene lage?

Sure Doc :19:

here is a short one (using mainly Madras Tamil)

1)With Autowallahs its always better to start with words like either Anna or Yeanga (its like Hello/Excuse me in Tamil) or use even Sir.

2) Once you get his attention, your next target would be to ask for his willingness to take you to the place of your choice. This can be said in the following way For Eg. Naan Mount Road vara poganum, Varuveengalaa? (I wanna go to Mount Road, will you take me there? )

3) If he says Yes (or Sari in Tamil), then your next question obviously would be how much you have to pay for that ride? This can be said as For eg. Mount Road vara Pogurathukku evvalavu charge? (How much is the charge for going up to Mount Road?)

4) If you are willing to pay the charge that he is asking for then that's the end of the story and don't forget to say Thanks Anna/Sir at the end of the drive to make him happy.

Additional bit, while traveling in a auto if you recognize the place that you want to get down passes by then you can say the same to Autowallah For Eg. Ingayey Enna Irakki Vittudunga (which means "Drop me here itself" or "I would like to get down here itself")

(If possible , try to avoid speaking to Autowallahs while travelling n act as if you are busy with messaging or sight seeing)

I don't know how much of help these words of mine would be for you, but feel free to shoot any questions regarding Tamil anytime :)

One of the oldest language still spoken today, my mother tongue as well.

Drop any sentences needing translation and i would be glad to help . Same goes for Kannada too (language of the neighboring state of Karnataka capital city being Bangalore).Let me start with a few words.

Vannakam means hello.

Idli sambar - inseparable twins, idli- rice cake, white and round and fluffy. sambar- goes along with idli ,basically a vegetable stew containing various flavors.Goes along with rice as well. Popular in south india.

Thalaivar- literal meaning leader. used in sync with Rajnikanth.

Kolaveri - the way you feel when non tamilians come up to you and keep asking the meaning of the word every day.

"Ayya kuda puduchuttu pora periyavare vanakamunga"

Ha ha ha. Good comedy sequence from one of the finest comedian of Tamil Cinema.

After coming to know that its Senthil, Gounder thinks,

"ada intha naathariava periyavarunnu sonnom.. veetila poi vaaya penoil vittu kaluvanum" :D
