Well I've never liked Travolta, so I guess I carry my grudge into every one of his movies

Schiller
19th March 2005, 05:41
i hated him till i saw pulp fiction and then i guess i started giving him a chance. he is a bloody good dancer waiasy. you saw be cool then?

Sage
19th March 2005, 05:43
I've walked out of very few movies Umar...very few

As far as Pulp Fiction goes, I thought his performance was alright, but completely overshadowed by the rest, especially Samuel L Jackson.

Schiller
19th March 2005, 05:45
you walked out of it?? i wont be too surprised specially since you didnt like pt 1. the black thinggy was getting on my nerves a bit too i guess. interestingly, what other ones have you walked out on?

jackson's performance was supreme wisay, travolta couldnt compete with that. i liked keitel's little cameo in it as well, if for not much then that one good line :oD

Schiller
19th March 2005, 05:47
ive mentioned it on page 10 of this thread muddy, in case youre searching? :-D

Schiller
19th March 2005, 05:48
no one has mentioned citizen kane here. for all the hype, i was not the least impressed

Sage
19th March 2005, 05:55
Let's see

As far as I can recently remember, I've walked out of

Queen of the Damned
A.I.
Shark Tale
SWAT
National Treasure
Captain Corelli's Mandolin

I almost walked out of The Recruit but I couldn't find the nerve to walk out of a Pacino movie, no matter how awful it was.

There's more but I don't remember all of 'em.

Schiller
19th March 2005, 05:56
what is interesting is you went to see queeno f the damned :-D :oD

recruit was really not good but like you said cant walk out of a pacino movie.

Sage
19th March 2005, 06:00
Yes Queen of the Damned was a mistake, and I knew it going into the movie.

Nearly all of the movies above I was dragged in to see, except AI.

But as my friends know, I despise poor movies and luckily I drove to those and decided to either leave or sneak into another theatre room.

For many others, I wanted to leave but couldn't either because I came with just one other person (usually a woman) or because I didn't drive.

Schiller
19th March 2005, 06:03
the way i see it, we would seldom make a mistake but then we get dragged to movies by girls and youre thinking should I dump her for taking me to this movie and enjoying it or should I try to find some other redeeming grace in her

Sage
19th March 2005, 06:06
Oh that thought has gone through my head many times, especially when I'm stuck watching a "Mona favorite"

Usually I don't even pay attention to the movie, laugh only if she laughs, and simply think about what I'll be getting in return for this torture.

Schiller
19th March 2005, 06:08
"Mona favourite"

:oD :oD

"and simply think about what I'll be getting in return for this torture."

and I bet they know that too :oD

Sage
19th March 2005, 06:14
And if I decide, instead of waiting for the movie to finish to get my reward, why not take it during the movie...

And if she stands up enraged and pours her drink on my pants and storms out of the theatre.

Sensitive me, we were watching some God-awful foreign flick and of course I'm not paying attention to whats going on in the movie and instead on her shirt. Apparently, I make my move during the scene where the main character's father is about to die from AIDS in his hospital bed.

Schiller
19th March 2005, 06:21
:oD :oD

my favourite movie for all the other reasons has to be the ring, nothing like a horror movie in the theater to bring out the best

Sage
19th March 2005, 06:23
Yes, very rare to see a good horror movie nowadays.

Mona favorite? Or in other words, Oscar winners. :-p

I'm a diehard fan of The Ring but it didn't scare me one bit. :o^ Going to watch the second one tomorrow so really looking forward to it after hearing mixed reviews on it.

Not all sequels are sucky - Spidy 2, Shrek 2, Attack of the Clones, Star Trek

I know I'm going to love The Ring 2 no matter what others say :-p

sajjad
19th March 2005, 07:29
4 good sequels mentioned.
out of a total of like a gazillian...sequels are over rated.

good luck with the ring 2, might i suggest watching it alone, might enhance the scare factor
or better yet watch it in a shade theatre.if not the movie the ppl will scare ya

catwoman
19th March 2005, 07:37
I love watching movies all by myself most of the time, will be watching this alone too. :-p

Not worried about the scare factor though since the first one didn't scare me at all.

Has anyone seen I Heart Huckabees with Dustin Hoffman and Jude Law?

Bro, please do watch The Sea Inside. I found it to be a completely wonderful film.

It managed to broach the sensitive topic of euthenasia and surprisingly wasnt didactic or patronising. Cleverly directed and great acting. Now it got an oscar (for the best foreign film) and usually for me that can be a condemnation but this is most certainly one of the exceptions.

Memorable and simply beautiful film.

Schiller
19th March 2005, 21:13
glengarry glenross - that one immortal scene, eh DM? :-D

jfk - definitely worth it

shahshank - brilliant

i also liked

Dead man walking

Schiller

casablanca for all its soupiness and all wasnt all that bad. bogart prevented it from being a stinker I think.

My pleasure bro
If you want any guage of scale, bear in mind i'd score most mainstream cinema movies 0, 1 or 2 out of 5 (not to sound elitist)

The Message is basically the quintessential Islamic film, in English. Well worth watching
4.5 (for muslims!)

Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet, Lost Highway = David Lynch (the director). Now David Lynch is a genre unto his own. He is easily among my 3 favourite directors and introduced a completely new cinema to me. His films really explore the limits of your senses, logic and morality. These three films are works of art in that the deeper you understand the reasoning behind the apparently random sequence of scenes, the greater your appreciation and enjoyment of the film.
All 5s

I'd advise you to read an interpretation of his movies from the internet AFTER you have watched it and tried to do this for yourself.

JFK - entertaining Oliver Stone movie. He's a director with a conscience and isn't the conventional take on the incident. Despite what detractors of the film say, he merely explores the unspoken possibilities of what happened.
4

True Romance - the title belies the film. Think more Pulp Fiction.
3.5

Glengarry Glenross - Genuinely all-star cast in this almost depressing film that uncovers the process and effect of moral corruption on humans in a high-stress job
4

Persona - challenging b+w film by film legend Ingmar Bergman. May be difficult to watch
4

The Virgin Suicides - Entertaining film set in typical American suburbia. Best description i've heard of it is 'it's like floating in a sea of females'
3

Il Postino - Nice little romance set in rural Spain.
3

Seven Samurai - Highly rated, very old classic.
3.5

DM
19th March 2005, 21:53

Blue Velvet 5
2001: A Space Odyssey 4.5

Schiller
19th March 2005, 22:24
hers a good poem by lawrence, didnt feel like a new thread on it cause I know only 4o or 5 people would read it
ha

D H lawrence:

I like people quite well
At a little distance.
I like to see them passing and passing
And going their own way,
Especially if I see their aloneness alive in them.
Yet, I don't want them to come near,
If they will only leave me alone
I can still have the illusion that there is room enough in the World.

DM

Nice meaning there Schiller (or Comma, which should we call you?!)
S

And about my ratings - they're relative ratings bros!

a 2.5 is an average film

so a 4 is a really excellent film

a 5 is a film that, more than just the entertainment, had a profound effect on me

Geordie Ahmed

Just watched The Ring 2 - kicked ass! It was just as good as the original one, if not better. I found this one a lot scarier than the previous one though, there were a few scenes where I actually almost closed my eyes. I couldn't even think properly for a while. To make things even worse for me, my phone had to ring during a Samara scene too. One of the best and scariest movies I've seen in a long time! I'd love to make a copy of the tape and give to Sami as a birthday present. :-D

Anyway since the birth of our daughter my wife and I haven't had the opportunity to go to the cinema. Which means just one thing - you guessed it! We joined our local Blockbusters rental shop.
