View Full Version : Wankhede chosen for a Sachin special: Lorgat

Ahmedabad: ICC chief Haroon Lorgat defended the decision to stage the World Cup final in Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, saying it would provide the perfect setting for the city's favourite son Sachin Tendulkar to script a "fairytale" ending.
Choosing the arena for the finale raised a few eyebrows amid growing frustration for shortage of tickets as the 33,442-seater stadium has the second lowest capacity out of the eight Indian venues hosting matches during the six-week tournament.
While Kolkata's revamped Eden Gardens could hold almost 60,000 fans, Delhi's Feroz Shah Kotla and Ahmedabad's Sardar Patel grounds have around 50,000 seats but all of them were overlooked for the April 2 final.
"You know you have got choices to make," International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive Lorgat told reporters on Wednesday.
"Can you imagine a (more) fairytale ending with Sachin Tendulkar getting a hundred in the final and India winning at the Wankhede which is his home ground?
"And no matter what the number (of seats), we do not have sufficient tickets."
Fans, seeking tickets, have regularly clashed with baton-wielding police in the subcontinent bringing the tournament on the verge of being a public-relations disaster.
The violence forced the organisers to shelve plans of selling some tickets for the final through box offices.
Lorgat said the organisers simply did not have the means to satisfy the ticketing demands of a cricket-loving country that boasts a billion plus population.
"Attendances have been phenomenal. We expect that from the quarter-final stages every single seat in the house will be sold," Lorgat said.
"It's an unfortunate reality that it's a finite sum of tickets and there is huge demand for it."
Demand of tickets for matches featuring the three co-hosts, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, have far exceeded supply.
Last month the official online ticket website crashed due to 10 million people chasing just 1,000 tickets for the final.
There have also been reports in the local media about allegations of black marketing of tickets while people waited in in long queues.
About 200 people shouted slogans and displayed placards against the local organisers outside the Sardar Patel Stadium -- which will host the India v Australia quarter-final on Thursday -- alleging mismanagement of tickets and black marketing.
"We simply don't tolerate black marketing of tickets and where we have found those instances we have certainly taken action," the top ICC executive said.
"In certain instances there have been arrests. We do alert police and other officials to ensure that does not happen."
The tournament has been a learning point for the ICC and the governing body will look at ways to handle the ticketing issues better in the future, the chief executive said.
"There is always a better way of doing certain things and there are few lessons that we can learn from it," Lorgat said.
"But the fact is that the demand has been absolutely phenomenal and no matter how well we tried we could not fit in the demand into the supply that we have got."
Mr lorgat seems to have too much of indian dreams they havent even played QF yet and he is thinking about them lifting the cup..

No, not in India at the moment, I live in the US, but the pressure is built not just at the time India is playing, but throughout the cup - particularly through the media (which is extremely sensationalist these days).
I don't even know how they have got this far, they must have developed nerves of steel. I think it would have been easier to focus if they played elsewhere, away from the madness.

I saw the highlights of the india vs england match, and i say there was definitely something suspicious about that tied match.
Notice that on the last ball, Swann made no effort to take the second run. And if swann had made an effort then the worst thing that could happen was that the batsman would have been run-out. But it was also likely that the fielder could have fumbled under presuure and the second run for victory would have been completed

2)BCCi HQ is at Mumbai , always has been
IMO, Mumbai was chosen because:
. One of 'alpha' cities of the World.
. Mumbai is the top city in terms of culture and economy in whole of Indian Subcontinent.
. Mumbai is dear to Indians and Pakistanis alike and finds strong connections with other nations in Indian Subcontinent.
Mumbai is the best choice and look forward for India to host the best-ever World Cup final.

Before we all get carried away, what about the source of the news?is that authentic?alot of journalists like to make masala news as people will read it more.Unless it doesnt say this on the ICC website itself,I dont think it could be true that the guy said that or maybe he said it in a wider context and presenting this case as a scenario as in "imagine if Sachin got a hundred in the final in his last game". I dont think someone so high up in an organisation would be foolish enough to come up with such biased comments although if he did, then he is a very stupid man.
Was reported on ESPN Star this evening.
Reuters reporting the same: http://uk.reuters.com/article/2011/03/23/cricket-world-final-icc-idUKSGE72M01V20110323
And there's a million other sources.

It's a shame if it actually is.
Wonder how something like this can be staged though.
India to win from now on would mean at least 3 teams play the QF, SF and Finals intending to lose?
Also means Pakistan is part of it?
Staged? Highly doubtful.
Ridiculous statement to make on his part because if India wins the WC now, people will surely think about this comment and point fingers.

I've no idea! I would like to believe it is not staged.
Lorgat shouldn't have said it at all. Such a shame he thinks it is absolutely fine to say all this with the media glare on match fixing.

He probably said it as a casual afterthought and the newspeople reported it as Tendulkar being the reason for Mumbai being chosen ..

Most likely was a casual statement, but he should never have made it.
Administrators should be perceived as neutral entities.

there might be something fishy going on. even in the post-match presentation, afridi didn't seem very confident about the semi's for some reasons :( he just said how his goal was to make semi's

History tells otherwise.
Except that history have nothing to do with such a match (if India do reach semis atall)

Shouldn't have come up with such remark. On the other hand such comments will put India under more pressure to win.It is really a disadvantage for our team.
I would have been really embarrassed if Mani had said something like that for Pak and Younis Khan had he been an ICC chief.
Some Indian might like Lorgat but fact is that he's not fit for the job, when a such an important personality isn't neutral then how can he be ICC chief in the first place?

BREAKING NEWS...
Upon hearing about Shoaib Akhtar's retirement after his world cup, Lorgat has announced to move the WC final from Mumbai to Rawalpindi. Stay tuned for updates...
May be Logart does not know that Shaoib has not scored any 100 in any loss! ;-)

Which means Pak will purposefully lose to India,a huge statement to make....
There are other ways.... without getting Pak players involved;
fixing the toss,
fixing the pitch,
fixing the umpires....

This whole "outsource the jobs to incompetent Indians and save money" industry needs to stop. You cant even trust them with customer service, why hire them for such a responsible job like the ICC president just to save some money?

He does not come into play during a game... Broad is one of the most biased refrees, but the man is biased against all Asians... And he does not affect the result of a game...

Eden Gardens and Gaddafi Stadium are the best sub continent grounds in terms of both charm and attracting a magnitude of fans

Hahaha...is he an astrologer reading the future? I am surprised he (supposedly) even said that! Does he mean to say that the WC final was preplanned for ONE man? That is insulting for the others..
It is worrisome. If it is planned, then I guess none of the team have any chance. May be that is why media fans all saying the cup is our. In the official capacity Logart should never make comments like this.

eden gardens is a shithole!
it has a great atmosphere but is probably the most dangerous, badly constructed ground period

I would interpret Lorgat's statement as following
Since the final is in India anyway, why not chose Mumbai so that IF India make it to the finals. Sachin will have a chance to play in front of his home town. This was in direct response to a question about why Mumbai was chosen over other larger stadiums
How many think that someone who has actually fixed the tournament will make such a stupid statement and announce to the wolrd that he has fixed.

Mr Lorgat should keep in mind that he's the ICC chief, therefore he should be as unbiased as possible in his decisions. This World Cup was just a celebration of everything Indian, as if the world revolved around them. That's why I don't enjoy watching India's games at all. It's all about them. I hope there won't be any World Cup hosted by India for a looonnggg time.

I should really start making a serious effort in following some american sport. Cricket just leaves a very bad taste in my mouth now.
Oh and congrats to Mr. Lorgat.
