Pak actress fined for kissing!
February 23, 2005 18:07 IST
The Pakistan government has imposed a heavy fine on actress Meera after she did a kissing scene in Mahesh Bhatt's new film, Nazar. The government is considering a ban on Pakistani actors from appearing in Indian movies, Pakistan's Online news agency reported on Wednesday.
Meera is seen kissing her Indian co-star Ashmit Patel in the film.
Meera, a popular actress from Lahore, had earlier complained about phone calls -- from people claiming to represent religious groups in Pakistan -- threatening her against acting in Indian films.
Meera is the first actress to speak about such a problem, as a number Pakistani film personalities have stepped up their association with Bollywood. Several Indian actors have also been visiting Pakistan to interact with the movie industry there.

a bit over the top.
She is an actress......all she was doing was acting. If you don't like it then don't watch the film.
I don't like Bollywood films and therefore I never watch them. I don't whinge about them constantly.
I know people here and going to defend the fine and say all the mullah stuff about her being a role model for young muslim girls but that doesn't stand in my opinion.......the parents of the young girls could always stop them from watching the films if they disaprove of this.
People need to stop trying to run and interfere with other peoples lives.

Who cares! A former prostitute being fined for kissing is hardly an eye-raiser.
So many actresses have done arguably worse things and still entered the elite 'Baigharaity Class'
Shahida Minni springs to mind......

Chop off my head, says Meera
It's a kiss-off Meera didn't expect. Pained by her government's decision to levy a fine for 'spreading vulgarity' in an Indian film, the Pakistani actress says she was only spreading peace.
Meera, who had already been receiving threats from fundamentalists back home for the 'bold' scenes in Soni Razdan's Nazar, got another rude shock on Wednesday. A media report said Pakistan's Ministry of Culture had decided to penalise the actress because she had acted 'against Islamic ethics and moral values' by kissing co-star Ashmit Patel in the film. The report also talked about a government move to ban all Pakistani actors from working in Indian films.
While so far the report remains unsubstantiated, Meera is distraught and admits as much. "I am stunned. I can't believe it. I still think it could be a mischievous rumour started by someone who wants to disturb the growing harmony between the two countries," she says.
The Pak actress insists she will go to any length to clear the misunderstanding. "If the government has really passed such an order, I will go straight to Islamabad and ask people there what wrong i have done. I have just one thing to say to Mr Musharraf - if I have committed a crime, chop of my head rather than impose a heavy fine. I am ready to give my life for a good cause.
"I am here because I want to bring the two countries closer. If I have kissed Ashmit, it's like Pakistan kissing India. If I have hugged him, it's as if every Pakistani has hugged every Indian. I don't understand why there's so much hue and cry. I am here as an ambassador of peace and whatever I am doing is part of the process of building bridges. Yes, there are a lot many things that I want to ask the Government of Pakistan," says Meera.
Mahesh Bhatt, the writer and co-producer of Nazar, is just as surprised by the Pakistani reaction. According to him: "It could be someone spreading rumours. However if it really is the official stand, then I think it's childish and quite ridiculous. How can any government condemn a work of art without actually seeing it? I keep coming back to the conclusion that there are people who don't like the growing bonds of friendship between India and Pakistan and it is they who are trying to subvert our relations."
Patel, who shared the on-screen kiss with Meera, too is nonplussed by all the brouhaha. "Haven't these people kissed anyone in their lives? Then make so much out of this one?" he asks.
Even the Pakistan High Commission in India doesn't seem to have a ready answer. "I don't know anything about the official stand," says Rai Riyaaz, PRO at the mission.
All efforts to contact Sevi Ali, the co-producer of Nazar, and Principal Information Officer of the Government of Pakistan Akram Shahidi, proved futile

umrao jaan had some pretty controversial scenes that's for sure
don't remember much about daira...stopped watching it after a couple episodes
it seems this 'azad media' thing is not exactly that great, because there have been dramas (or at least content w/in them) that I don't believe is upto the standard we know in terms of Pakistani dramas when it comes to them being family entertainment, it's quite sad to see...glamour is overtaking good stories and the dress code ko par lag gaya hain
majority of the pakistani movies being churned out for many years have been nothing short of dispicable...hence why people have stopped watching them...they at times have surpassed the crap being churned out of india, but it seems that the industry is taking somewhat of measures to make family movies...yeh dil aapka huwa being an example.
while this is nothing new for meera as she's done similar likely in her movies in Pakistan, the issue becomes that she's there representing Pakistan, that is how she is known (unfortunately). All i will say is that India can keep her. We never needed filth like her in this country. Mr. Bhatt can truly keep her in India where she seems quite happy. She is not wanted back :-D

The kissing of someone haair is unIslamic but then there are so many other things we ALL do that are not Islamic. We should including the Pak Government or whoever has a problem with Meera should first look at ourselves in the mirror first before telling off others. No doing that but preaching without practicing is unIslamic in itself.
So she kissed and shouldnt have but why such a big deal made out of this? She kissed on her own accord and can not harm anyone else really by kissing. let her do what she wants and any sins she will pay for them just like all of us.

its an essential part of a country's economy.
if there wasnt any crime what would the thousands of ppl employed by the police and other security agencies go. where would arms suppliers get all thier money from.
Crime may kill but it also provides a chance for many to keep living!
