When ever a force is acting at an angle. For the component with the angle we write FCosx and other one we use FSinx.
F : Force
x : Angle

what if the question is asking me to resolve horizontally and vertically
It depends how the angle is given in the question.
If the angle is given wrt to the horizontal line it's FcosX for the horizontal component and FsinX for the vertical component.
If the angle is given wrt to the vertical line it's vice versa
Hope you got it. It's easier to explain trignometry and mechanics with the help of a diagram.
