View Full Version : The best game Pakistan failed to win?

Slightly unusual thread but an interesting question. The T20 game against Australia is still considered by some as the best T20I game played. Also, as heartbreaking as Sydney was, it was an epic game that had everything. Less recently, Shoaib Akhtar against Australia in SL, Kamran and Razzaq holding on against India in Mohali and I always loved this classic;

Anyone going to name Mohali? :wahab

Good spot. That was a classic game.

The one where kaniktar scores a four of last ball...Ganguly scored 120 odd in the match too. it was first time ever in ODI's where 300+ score was chased.

The T20 loss to India - any game that goes to the last ball deserves a mention I guess. It also showed Imran Nazir's prowess in the shorter form. Loved his cameo.

But I would agree that the T20 Semi vs Australia was one of the best of our losses.

Sydney comes to mind, Hussey again the tormentor. What a start by Sami. What a finish :))

The Sydney Test was unreal, as if Pak tried everything to somehow lose the game.

I remember the game against Australia. There was a caught behind decision of Langer - or perhaps Gilly, don't remember - that wasn't given on the last day. Otherwise the crims would have been 130 odd for 6 and pretty much game over. But still, it was a fantastic game.

That was not our fault actually, if you remember correctly saqlain probably got the last wkt like three times but the biased umpires didn't give it out because of fear of backlash from the crowd.

I do think that this Sri tie was the biggest comeback in the history of ODI cricket and was just maybe recently over taken by Razzaq's miraculous innings against S.A

oh well your right just saw that billy doctrove a.k.a not outer was the umpire in that test.

Pakistan missed two certain run-out opportunities and were also denied at least a couple of clear catching decisions by both the umpires

The 20 20 final against India was a complete heart break. Pakistan had done the hard work of restricting the powerful Indian batting to mere 150 odd, and then the cameo by Imran Nazir. His stupid run out, had he stayed there for another 2 overs, it would have been all over for India.

Mohali took over everything! Had so much at stake! That one win could have been a sweet revenge for many of our past missed glories!

After that probably 1996 Quarter Final then Hobart & then Sydney Test

and after that T20 loss to australia of course.

Personally, the OP title is a tad misleading. It should be more of a case of ‘let the opposition win’ opposed to ‘failed to win’.

I don't agree with Mohali..
Pakistan did a fine job of restricting India to 260...But in a semifinal, chasing 260 is always tough and in addition to that there was this fragile batting of Pak, add to that they were chasing...
I know people were not comfortable with India scoring only 260 but it was a fighting total in a semifinal...
For me, it has to be the 1996 quarterfinal...Even though India scored around 285...Pak had the best of the starts...with 160 required in 35 overs, with 9 wickets remaining, the opposition mentally crushed...with the weak Indian bowling line up...and a Semifinal place at stake...Its too much I guess...I remember, I was demoralised till that 15 over...I was thinking India will lose but thanks to the stupidity of :aamer, the gates were opened and prasad was so fired up that WE WON...

Well the title was carefully worded to include drawn tests or tied ODIs.

Guys which match has been more heart breaking for Pakistani public? The T20 final , Mohali SF or that 1996 QF

The T20 final win is most wonderful for me so i guess that would be your big disappointment.

I can tell you my most disappointing India-Pakistan match, the Chennai test :(
You guys have won most of the epic tests between our teams wheras i would say we have won most of the big ODI games though you have a superior overall record. Our test wins over you aren't really very memorable.

How big was that Mohali game for Pakistan? Will you ever get over it ?

30th June 2011, 17:12
It didn't take me long to get over Mohali. We dropped 4-5 catches and that's where we let things slip.

I would probably say the best game we failed to win was Karachi ODI vs India. What a match that was.

The 350-345 match at Lahore(or was it Karachi?), Independence Cup final at Dhaka and T-20 final and group stage games were great India-Pakistan matches that Pakistan failed to win.

You can hardly call the Mohali game a classic based on quality of play only. Which is why I won't count it despite the importance of the game.

This match.
Perhaps the only match where a team lost after winning.
Crazy rules back then to avoid a tie in ODI.
http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/64304.html

India made 212 runs 6 wickets
Pakistan was 211 for 6 before the last ball. Abdul Qadir was run out going for the second run and India won as they had lost fewer wickets. If the batsmen had not attempted the second run, Pakistan would have won as they were ahead after 25 overs.

some of you saying mohali must not have been watching the match. it wasn't that close. for the majority of the pakistani innings everyone knew what the end result was going to be.

now the indopak match in karachi where inzi/moyo ALMOST took us to victory and that outstanding katch by kaif...now that is the best game pakistan failed to win. nothing compares to it really.

Mohali, thread closed.

Pak did not even come close to India's total of 260. At 7/180, pak was done and dusted with just 8 overs left and only tailenders left to fight on a pitch where ball was coming slow and keep low occasionally.

I don't know how Pak failed to win when it didnot even make it an even contest.

The third test vs West Indies in 1988, it was they say an EPIC Series, Imran leading Pak and Richards leading WI. Pak won the first test, second was drawn, with Miandad scoring back to back centuries in the series, and the third one Pak needed 2 wkts to win and WIndies needed 60 odd. Umpiring came into play and twice on Akram and Qadir's bowling the batsmen were given lives and eventually Windies won to square the series.
A chance of winning the first ever series against the Mighty West Indians went begging. It was the umpiring that came to Windies rescue when it mattered most ;)

India with the scratchy batting and the way Pakistan bowled should nothave even scored more than 150, if it was not for the chances that went begging, Pak would have won it comfortably

Not the best, but 1999 World Cup Pak vs. South Africa.

SA were 58 for 5 chasing 221 but Klusener was unstoppable in that tournament.

Atmosphere was electric of course, given the match was at Trent Bridge.

You never know if taking those dropped catches would've had any effect. All those catches were of just one batsmen who probably played the scratchiest innings of his life. Those 85 runs weren't very fluently scored and India bats very deep. In the end, when it seemed that India wouldn't even score 230 Raina stepped up to take the total past 260. You never know who would've turned the hero of the day. Dropped catches only meant that Pak team was rusty and in the end they failed to put up a fight. It was not a close match at all and few lusty blows from Misbah at the end simply narrowed the margin of defeat but like I said Pak lost that game much earlier than that.

Pak batting line up is very fragile these days ,plus its WC semifinal in INDIA. Thats one big challenge. Even best pak teams couldnt beat ind in wc.

Of course we could have won that had the chase been orchestrated more aptly. We were chasing only 260, not 350...

The batting line up subsided under pressure. It was a massive opportunity missed. :misbah

Unfortunately Pak's history of chasing only 260 is far and few. Given that an inexperienced team and a high pressure match... this was mission impossible.
