The one-day leg of England's tour of Pakistan got underway in the leafy surrounds of Bagh-e-Jinnah in Lahore, as Pakistan A won the toss and chose to bowl first in the misty morning conditions. Because of bad-light issues, this match has been designated a 45-over-a-side affair, although even with a 9.30am start - half-an-hour earlier than was the case for last week's Test - it is unlikely that a result will be possible unless one side or the other collapses spectacularly.

That prospect was enhanced significantly when Andrew Strauss became the first victim of the morning, caught behind off Riaz Afridi for 5. Fresh off the plane from England, where he had been attending the birth of his first child, and named captain as well in the absence of a host of senior players, Strauss and Matt Prior, his opening partner, struggled in the bowler-friendly conditions, adding just 19 runs in the first six overs.

England's team for this match includes all three one-day specialists - Kabir Ali, Ian Blackwell and Vikram Solanki, as well as Prior and James Anderson, neither of whom took part in the Test series. Marcus Trescothick, Andrew Flintoff and Steve Harmison have been rested ahead of the first one-day international in three days' time, while Michael Vaughan is back home in England undergoing treatment on his injured right knee.

For Pakistan, the most significant name on the team-sheet is Abdul Razzaq, who is returning from injury and could yet play a big part in the one-day series, not to mention the forthcoming Test series against India.

Prior out for 72. Tahir Khan picked him up.

Matt Prior grasped his opportunity to impress at the top of the order, as England recovered from a difficult start to the one-day leg of their tour of Pakistan. After 28 overs against Pakistan A, they had moved along to 134 for 4, with Prior pushing his claims for a first-team place with boundary-laden 72.

In the leafy surrounds of Bagh-e-Jinnah in Lahore, Pakistan A won the toss and chose to bowl first in the misty morning conditions. Fresh off the plane from England, where he had been attending the birth of his first child, and named captain as well in the absence of a host of senior players, Strauss and Prior had struggled in the bowler-friendly conditions, adding just 21 runs in the first six overs.

But as the sun cut through the clouds and the early life in the pitch died down, Prior began to unfurl the selection of strokes that could earn him a role as England's Supersub when Marcus Trescothick returns to the top of the order. He added 76 for the second wicket with Vikram Solanki, who has been offered another opportunity in the absence of Michael Vaughan.

England's team for this match includes all three one-day specialists - Solanki, Kabir Ali and Ian Blackwell, as well as Prior and James Anderson, neither of whom took part in the Test series. Trescothick, Andrew Flintoff and Steve Harmison have been rested ahead of the first one-day international in three days' time, while Vaughan is back home in England preparing for surgery on his injured right knee.

Solanki had moved along to an attractive 26 when he was superbly caught by Tahir Khan, running back from point to take a skied swish over his shoulder. That gave Abdul Razzaq a welcome wicket on his comeback from injury, and soon afterwards Kevin Pietersen's difficult tour continued, as he was bowled by a beauty from Yasir Arafat for 2. Prior's performance came to an end as he top-edged a sweep to short backward square-leg, giving Tahir Khan his first wicket of the innings.

Matt Prior grasped his opportunity to impress at the top of the order, and Paul Collingwood quickly transferred his Test form into the one-day arena, as England recovered from a difficult start to their one-off warm-up match against Pakistan A.

At the innings break, they had compiled a decent 236 for 7 in 45 overs, with Collingwood unbeaten on 75 from 79 balls. Earlier, Prior had been the main man for England. In the absence of Marcus Trescothick, he took his opportunity to impress at the top of the order and cracked a boundary-laden 72.

Pakistan A won the toss and chose to bowl first in the leafy surrounds of Bagh-e-Jinnah. Because of bad-light issues, this match has been designated a 45-over-a-side affair, although even with a 9.30am start - half-an-hour earlier than was the case for last week's Test - it is unlikely that a result will be possible unless England can rattle through the opposition.

On a misty morning, survival was tricky in the early stages of England's innings, and Prior and Andrew Strauss added just 21 runs in the first six overs before Strauss was caught behind off Riaz Afridi for 5. Fresh off the plane from England, where he had been attending the birth of his first child, and named captain for this fixture as well, it was a rude reacquaintance with the country.

But as the sun cut through the clouds and the early life in the pitch died down, Prior began to unfurl the selection of strokes that could earn him a role as England's Supersub when Trescothick returns to the top of the order. He added 76 for the second wicket with Vikram Solanki, who has been offered another opportunity in the absence of Michael Vaughan, before Solanki was superbly caught for 26 by Tahir Khan, running back from point to take a skied swish over his shoulder.

That gave Abdul Razzaq a welcome wicket on his comeback from injury, and soon afterwards Kevin Pietersen's difficult tour continued, as he was bowled by a beauty from Yasir Arafat for 2. Prior's performance came to an end soon afterwards as he top-edged a sweep to short backward square-leg, giving Tahir his first wicket of the innings.

But Collingwood came into his own in the middle order, marshalling the remainder of the innings as a selection of colleagues played handy cameos around him.

Blackwell, who has a golden opportunity to cement a slot in the side ahead of the World Cup next winter, had moved along to a quickfire 15 when he was caught behind off Iftikhar Rao, while Kabir's innings ended in freakish circumstances, when his thumping straight drive cannoned off Collingwood's shoulder and looped into the hands of Rafitullah Mohammad at mid-on.

England's reserve wicket-keeper Matthew Prior made a strong case to be picked for the first one-dayer against Pakistan after scoring 72 in a warm-up.

Prior smacked 12 fours in his 84-ball innings as England hit 236-7 in their 45 overs against Pakistan A.

Paul Collingwood continued his fine form, scoring an unbeaten 75.

Stand-in skipper Andrew Strauss scored just five and Kevin Pietersen failed again with just two runs.

Tahir Khan and Iftikhar Anjum took two wickets each for Pakistan A in the match at Bagh-e-Jinnah.

England rested Marcus Trescothick, Andrew Flintoff and Steve Harmison in what is the only warm-up game before the five-match series starts in Lahore on Saturday.

Vikram Solanki hit 26, Ian Blackwell 15 and Kabir Ali four, although he was especially unlucky to fall to an oddity of a dismissal.

His full-blooded on-drive hit non-striker Collingwood's bat and looped up for a comfortable catch at mid-on.

England were put in to bat in by Pakistan A captain Abdul Razzaq.

I think with a score here bazid might be able to catch a county offer or something. He is lucky this a relatively week a team so he is the star once again.

He should join a league team - or immigrate to Zimbabwe! Heard they are looking for batsmen.....

i think there is no harm in youngsters perofroming consitently well against touring teams in the first class matches before they given a long run in the international side....every player must earn their keep and this sort of selection policy will only strengthen players and not dishearten them!

bazid should just keep performing whenever he is given the chance

True - though at some point management have to be open and honest with people like him, and say "Sorry chap, we dont rate you, and you wont get many chances"

No point in making people like Misbah/Bazid play A team cricket for years on end. Bazid has made a packet of runs for Pak A over the last 2 years - the most prolific and consistent A batsman by far - way over even Hassan Raza.

What's the point in him playing for the A team anymore? I dont see he has anything to prove one way or other. Either he is good enough, or not good enough to play test cricket.

Management and Burly Bob and Burly Inzi should just tell him the bottom line now. Ditto for Misbah and a few others.

This will keep the pressure on the less established Pkstn batsmen, knowing that if they don't perform there are others ready to take their place.

Bazid scored a match winning 90 not out off 88 balls............ I always preferred Raza over Bazid but he has been consistent(just like Raza) and deserves a chance in ODI's again. (I am sure he played last ODI we played against WI).

Superb knock to guide Pakistan to victory with just one ball and one wicket left only.

i htink bazid will be given a run after the first two one dayers...

especially if we have wrapped up the series after three games then i can see a few youngsters being given a run

Personally I believe its part of the game. Because anything with a selection commitee has bias whether we see it or not. In australia, we see these thing happen alot, from the dropping of damian martyn and lack of chances for stuart law or In england dropping thorpe for pietersen. Its all part of the game. So yeah there hard lucks in the selection process but the player has no control over that.

All bazids duty is to score as he is playing for pakistan and do pakistan proud. NOt some half a** job that everyone regrets. If he does Pakistan proud he willbe noticed and respected. In the end bazid isnt a junaid zia because of the unique distinction.

But did I say conspiracy theory?

I said they shold be honest with him. A batsmen cant be on trial for a few years...if others get slected ahead of him despite performance then management dont rate him.

And they need to tell him that...

Good post. Very valid points.

Bazid and Raza are perhaps those who have not got enough chances to prove themselves. I believe their time will come, as age is on their side, and we need a couple of quality players to fill the void after Inzi and Yousuf.

FP who has said Bazid is not going to play for Pak? The reason he is not in the team yet is because we have a very solid middle order and its after the world cup I feel Bazid and Raza will be given a fair run because i'm sure there next in-line after the current lot. All Bazid needs to do is continue to impress and who knows, he may even get a chance before the world cup just like Hasan has impressed and got to play some matches. I for one feel that they haven't just lost all hope in Bazid.

Are you referring to the match in which your man Farhat had trouble negotiating the threatening HK pacers?
