View Full Version : Whilst adopting English words starting with "S" , why are they written with "Alif"?

There are many English words such as 'school' or 'score' which we write in Urdu with an ا which makes it sound like "Askool" or "Askore"? They are written in Urdu script as the following:
اسکول
اسکور
Frankly speaking, they sound so irritating to read:boom:. My curiosity is behind the need to write it like that since we can perfectly make it sound like 'school' by writing it like سکول:13:.

Because if you write سکول, it will be pronounced as Sikool or sakool since the first letter must always either have a zabar, zeyr, peysh harkat. :)

But still better than "Askool" in my opinion:26:.

Makes it easier to pronounce them.

Use of 'Alif' (ا) for the English letter 'O' is getting on my nerves nowadays. Why canīt they put a 'Peysh' on top of it to make it sound better?
Or other short vowels for other English words?
'Killing' suddenly sounds like "Kalang"
'Top' sounds like "Taap".
Jonathan 'Trott' was pronounced like "Traat" the other day.
And the list goes on:facepalm:......
^My objection is primarily meant for the Urdu news channels.^
It's completely ridiculous to put an 'alif' before Urdu words starting with S..Normally the smartass Urdu -daan of Karachi do it. All throughout Punjab it's written as Skool!

Yea , easier pronunciation is the reason . Still , you will hear Punjabis say sakool . :P
PS - Urdu newscasters are really jahil . Gone are the days of PTV where they would make you correct your pronunciation . Now you have got apparently not so well educated reporters and newscasters .
The refined Urdu , the way it was supposed to be spoken , is dying . You have even Urdu speaking people screwing up the pronunciation .
farq became faraq
zakhm became zakham
You should watch this old PTV drama about it if you have time - highly recommended - Mirza Ghalib Bandar Road Pe .
