Realistic Contenders to be our future captains!

We need a good captain after Misbah, a captain where the team is built around, a captain who has the intelligence to handle the media as well as its own players, a captain who would not let power get to his head, a captain who has full respect of its players the backing of his board and a captain who can perform and lead by example.

Ideally the captain should be able to play in all three formats, but that does not mean that you chose a captain for all formats who isn't fit to play in Test and only good in LOI vice versa.

At the moment we are struggling to have players who would be capable of leading the team in all formats so therefore I think we could do well with having to different captains. Our test Team is settled at the moment, with Misbah doing a very good job.

Captaincy Contenders

Skills and Qualities:

-Should be able to speak English to be able to communicate well with match officials and foreign media.
-Should be able to unite the team, get rid of jealousy and be well respected.
-Should perform in any situation and lead by example.

Shortlisted Candidates: Mohammed Hafeez, Shoaib Malik, Umar Akmal, Azhar Ali and Misbah and MR X

Mohammed Hafeez has the quality to be a decent skipper, he has shown that he has the needed intelligence, he has a good tactical mind, he has established himself as a regular in the team and he has improved immensely in the last year or so and gone to become one of the best all-rounders when on form in the world.

What speaks FOR Hafeez to be the captain is that he is in the perfect age to and is fulfilling his potential slowly. He is also respected in the team and could take over from Misbah. He is also versatile as he is able to bowl well, bat and is an excellent fielder.

What speaks AGAINST him is that he still has the odd game here and there where doesn't perform good enough. We don't know yet how he would perform with irresponsibility on his shoulders to lead the team.

Shoaib Malik also a ex or former captain who was booted out by the PCB. I think he would have learnt from his mistakes and at his time he was very young and was not the first choice replacement for Inzi. He was fooled by the board as they then offered a young player the captaincy and he took it without thinking carefully about the negatives of it. Under his time the team did quite well but wasn't committed in interacting as a captain. He isn't the best player outside the sub-continent but also not the worst as recent history shows.

For Malik is that he is known to the politics around Pakistani Cricket Team which can help him handle things better this time.

Against Malik is that if the dark side of him comeback and he is in the team without Authority than it will be hard for Pakistani team not alone for the captain.

Umar Akmal is a special talent, he is very young and still needs to mature as a batsmen and cricketer. In the age he is where most people start to graduate and start working he is already being tipped as Pakistan next superstar who will bring success to this team. He needs better guidance by family and team so we can make sure that this guy reaches his full potential because if we invest in him now it will lead to be a successful investment for the future. He needs to be given more responsibility but don't take his freedom away from him. We should give him time to succeed. I think if everything goes well he should have around 200 Odi's to his name by 2015. This is when he will be 25 and I think after the World Cup he should then be given the captaincy till then this guy should be groomed like Michael Clarke was by Australia. He is our answer to a captain in all forms of the game not just as yet.

Azhar Ali is a very good player, calm character, looks to be brought up well and is becoming a very solid batsmen. I think he has the qualities of a good captain. However he still hasn't been given enough chance at Limited Overs cricket so that I could choose him. Ideally he should take over Misbah in the next few years as TEST captain only. I think he can be our Test Capatin and Umar Akmal could take over Limited Over cricket.

Misbah could be the answer to all question but only if he was 30 and not 36!! The brings everything we need for captain to be successful in Pakistan. This guy enjoys playing cricket and doesn't care what people are doing or planning he want to just get on with it. He is a very good Test captain but he isn't a automatic choice in the ODI team for me.

MR X, well you can guess who this is. He has been our captain, liked by many and disliked by twice as many!! He did a good job but things unknown to me or uncleared led him to go on a Rafa like famous rant which led him to excluded from Pakistani Team. However this guy is the only SuperStar we have at the moment. If we want to sell our cricket we haven't got anyone better than him unfortunately. He was the answer a few months ago but now he seems to be history. If he is given the captaincy again and is given the full support, Authority and the team he WANTS! I think he can do a reasonable job which many haven't been able to do for a while.

My conclusion to this analysis is that at the moment we haven't got the resources to be able to have a good leader across all three formats. So for now we need to build a team even if it takes for us to have more than one captain. My ideal solution would be that we should Leave Misbah as captain of Test team and have either MR X back as captain OR Let Malik as Captain and Hafeez as his assitant take over and make a team. Meanwhile PCB should groom jr Akmal to be the next captain in for all three formats in the coming years.

Do you agree PPers?

Captaincy Options

Taufeeq - Ah no. He should be no where near the ODI squad but his List-A & T20 average tells me something different. + He doesn't look captaincy material. His test batting is awesome though. An average of 40. Brilliant + top class..

Azhar Ali - for me, the guys mature. Can play all formats and doesn't look to big headed. He's calm and consistent. He just needs that one century under his belt and I'm sure he'l kick on more from then on.

Mohammed Hafeez - Brilliant ODI player but doesn't cut it at test level therefore he shouldn't be captain.

If PCB was to employ different format captains I would go for.

Hafeez - ODI
Azhar - TEST.

PS. If only Misbah could last for a few more years up until 40. He has done a remarkable job since being employed as captain, he's lead from the front and his leadership skills have been quality and a job to watch.

I hope it's Afridi or Malik jst my opinion I knw most of ppl here would disagree but they r the 1s for me. Cuz too early for Azhar Ali he doesnt even make a place in ODI, Hafeez v good player but no captaincy material, U Akmal too early and Misbah is on the last stage. So .......

For me, Azhar Ali is definitely the next Test captain, and perhaps of the shorter formats too (has good domestic records, but hasn't been given chances in ODIs/T20s yet.)

Taufeeq has just made a comeback. Will he be able to deal with all the politics?? I don't think so he should just stick to being a solid batsmen atm.

Well hopefully Misbah remains captain for the next year or so.

Hafeez is an option, but he seems to be a bit "over-confident" and "too full of himself" and could become something negative for Pak cricket if given power. (Just my honest opinion)

Shoaib Malik, well I would tip him to be the next captain, but am not too sure given his past "harkatein".

Azhar Ali - too early to be made captain at this stage, after a bit more experience though who knows?

Umar Akmal - too early as well

Mr. X - well no comments on him...

How about going a little unconventional and giving the captaincy to either Umar Gul or Saeed Ajmal? Just a thought :runaway:

(I would actually want :sohail back in the team as captain :P)

Ajmal no way to be captain at any cost. He is just one of those players who will do their job and that's it. Bit like Razzaq tbh similar personalities not captain material.

Gulley however I am in two minds he has got the experience now and his clean past should is a big positive. He gives his 100% for the country every time. But I am not convinced with Gulley's tactical intelligence.

Make Hafeez the captain for the shorter formats, and keep Misbah for Test matches. Hafeez should not be anywhere near the Test Team and should concentrate solely on shorter formats. Make Azhar Ali the vice captain in Test and he will take over from Misbah, in the next 2 years.

why no one is considering ASAD SHAFIQ for being the future captain
if pcb really want to groom a youngster as a future captain
asad is the best choice

unlike akmals......he is not controversial
unlike azhar...........he can play all the formats( azhar yet to cement his place in odi team)

he is more calm n consistent than azhar
n look more calm cool n humble than azhar

He is the best choice to be the future captain
better choice than azhar n umar akmal

Make Hafeez captain in limited overs.

Persist with Misbah as captain in tests.

Hopefully one of our youngsters will really establish his spot in the side in tests. People are saying Azhar, but he hasn't even scored a century yet and his average is mid 30s. Let him concentrate on his batting. Hopefully by the time Misbah retires, Azhar will have an average of around 40, scoring a few hundreds.

In Limited overs Hafeez if not Misbah....in tests, it should be Misbah for another two years.

oh god anyone but hafeez throws his wicket away and has an air of arrogance too. I would rather Azhar Ali in tests and ODI and might aswell have malik in t20

A little bit of arrogance isn't bad imo it shows he has confidence in his abilities.

Mohammed Hafeez is clearly the best choice, he has experience captaining his domestic side and he is also the only one that deserves to be in our side for all three formats
