Coach, players should refrain from crossing limits: Razzaq

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: All-rounder Abdul Razzaq has said that coach and players should refrain from crossing their respective limits otherwise it can trigger trouble within the setup. “I think too much interference triggers problems, it does not only put pressure on the players but on the coach as well,” said Razzaq while talking to a private news channel. At the time when the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is pondering upon hiring a new coach for the national team, all kinds of observations are coming to the fore. Due to the history of tussles between players and coaches in the past, the majority of experts are endorsing an idea of having a foreign coach for the cricket team.

The recent bitter row between the former coach Waqar Younis and ex-skipper Shahid Khan Afridi made everyone, including the players, cautious in their remarks on the issue. “The coach should not have an ego problem, it hampers progress,” said Razzaq, who has played 46 Tests, 262 ODIs and 26 T20s for Pakistan. The PCB has appointed a three-member committee including Intikhab Alam, Naushad Ali and Zaheer Abbass with Ramiz Raja as their aide, for hiring services of a new coach. Waqar resigned from the job before the tour of Zimbabwe on medical ground. In the meantime, the PCB appointed former chief selector Mohsin Hassan Khan as the interim coach for the Sri Lankan series to be played in the United Arab Emirates.

Fair, but Pakistani captains tend to have a low tolerance for what constitutes "interference".

A captain needs to understand, the head coach will always have opinions. Afridi couldn't work with Waqar, but Misbah has done it with ease. This suggests something was wrong with Afridi's tolerance level, not Waqar's.

If it was Waqar's fault than Misbah would be complaining too.

Or you could take it the other way and say Misbah is very tolerant. Waqar may well have had a big ego (I'm just guessing) and it's entirely possible, being the professional that Misbah is, he thought 'oh chado yaar' and decided to go along with Waqar's interferance for the sake of morale. :)

I'm just making the point that the biggest problems arise when two big egos try to work together. Neither will ever back down and so both will argue with each other all the time. Quite possible that this was the case between Afridi and Waqar.

Players should learn to admit their own failings and not put the blame on the captain and coach always - PakPrince

I suppose in both scenarios, one thing is for certain, Misbah is quite the team man. :))

Yeah, I have no doubt Waqar toed the line with Afridi. Waqar has had a past of trying to stick his nose into everything, especially during his playing days. The fault lies with both.

However, Misbah's successful run under the same coach suggests Waqar could have been handled by Afridi, but he didn't want to or his ego got in the way. All Afridi had to do was look at Misbah and see how Misbah was handling things with Waqar. In fact, he could have gone up to Misbah and asked for advice, after all this is what teammates are for!

The new coach (whomever he will be) needs to sit down with his captains and talk about what they expect from each other. What is acceptable for the captains and what is acceptable for the coaches. No more free styling, on the go type coaching. :))
