Having grown up with Pakistani friends, I can speak and understand Urdu but can't read it. I want to learn to read Urdu so help me out PPers.
Since I can read Arabic, I expect to get a hang of reading Urdu pretty soon.
For now I want to know:
1 - How many alphabets are there in the Urdu language?
2 - Any websites that help in learning Urdu?
3 - Urdu grammar, especially how one differentiates between masculine and feminine gender, confuses me the most. Sentences ending with ta/ti have often landed me in embarassing situations. :afridi

"Zaani" is the word actually as "ZinaŽkaar" is not the correct one according to the dictionaries.
It means 'fornicator' or 'adulterer'.
Example:
"YeŽh shaks/aurat zaani hai" ('This man/woman is fornicator/fornicatress/adulterer/adulteress').
Hope am correct:).

Hi,
Word for today is
zabaandaanii (ज़बानदानी)
I know zabaan means language but not sure what this word means exactly. Noticed that this 'daanii' is attached behind some other words as well. Something to do with grammer perhaps... like the -vaalaa that we all use very often?
Looney
6th December 2011, 18:28
i am not sure it is a word because zabaan means a language or tongue and daani means where you keep something .
maybe you meant zabaan darazi ??

Hi,
I found out that zabaandaan refers to a linguist. So i guess zabaandaani means fluency in a language or something like that...
Anyway words for today
zarb (ज़रब)
zaraayat (ज़रायत)
junbish
jumbish
Of the last 2 words which one exists and if both exists what is the difference between them because it looks like both of them refer to some kind of mechanical movement.
Thanks!

chotti ye sounds like I as in Eating, while bade ye sounds like AE like hey
tujhe with bade ye makes the word a pronoun, if you use chotti ye, it will make it an adverb where you will have to add a preposition like if you replace tujhe with bade ye with tujhe with choti ye, you will say like
tujhe ko dekha to jana sanam
instead of
tujhe dekha to jana sanam
i guess im guiding you in right direction
also there is slight change in the meaning in terms of emphasising manner
hope this helps

Samar is not used in everyday Urdu , you would sound like Mirza Ghalib born in the wrong century if you say , " Samar ramzan main mehengay ho jaate haiN "
