England’s former captain Michael Vaughan, on Saturday wrote in his article for the Telegraph that England’s upcoming Test series against Pakistan in January, 2012 would be a tough challenge as England will be playing the series in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Vaughan, said that while England are the number one side in the longest format of the game, they still has to prove their worth while playing in the subcontinent.
England, who have given splendid performances against Australia and India in recent months, played their games in Australia and England, where the Poms are at their best.
The side has not played much cricket in the subcontinent, which would most likely cost dearly once they come up against a resurgent Pakistan.
The former middle-order batsman warned Andrew Strauss’ side to be watchful of Pakistan bowlers as they are capable of taking 20 wickets in a Test, a problem England did not have to worry about against the likes of Australia and India.
“But what makes England vulnerable against Pakistan is they have the power to take 20 wickets, something you never felt Australia and India possessed during the Ashes or last summer,” said Vaughan.
Vaughan expected England to retain their bowling attack of four bowlers intact against Pakistan, as England have been winning with this combination and it doesn’t make any sense to change it.
England have given commendable performances in Test cricket by playing three seamers and a spinner in the form of Graeme Swann, who England believe can bowl-out the opposition on a given day.
However, England will have to be mentally prepared to bowl for longer periods as they are not going to bowl-out their opponents within 80 overs in the subcontinent.
Talking about Strauss’ captaincy, Vaughan wrote, “Andrew Strauss’s captaincy is exceptional but he needs runs. He will be sitting at home now wanting that Test hundred. Life becomes just that little bit easier as a captain if you have a hundred under your belt. I saw enough in his game last summer to know he is playing well enough, it is just whether the pitches in UAE will suit his batting.”
Pakistan and England will play against each other in a series that includes three Tests, four One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three T20s.
