JALANDHAR: Violent incidents of ransacking shops in Attari bazaar, a hub of wholesale business and two banks situated at Phagwara gate and Mandi road marred Punjab bandh here, call for which was given by the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takhat Saheb Gurbachan Singh to press the government for granting clemency to Balwant Singh Rajoana, condemned to death by a Chandigarh Court in the former Chief Minister Beant Singh’s assassination case.
More than 2000 Sikhs including women and youth activists in different groups on motorcycles and SUV’s hoisting saffron flags marched into the bazaars and forced the people to down the shutters of their business ventures. They gave blows of swords and lathis on the shutters of closed shops also to create panic. The police remained a silent spectator during all the times instead to chase away the miscreants creating law and order problem.
Rumours about the march of the Sikh protestors towards BMC chowk to smash the statue of former slain chief minister Beant Singh remained all the times on the rife keeping the police and the media on toes. More than 1500 Sikh protestors’ ghearoed Amritsar bound Shan-e-Punjab train in the afternoon near Hoshiarpur Railway Crossing on Jalandhar-Amritsar railway track.
The Sikh youths brandishing swords entered the Attari bazaar in the morning and raised the half open shutter of a glass house and smashed many photo frames and glass sheets. The miscreants also attacked the adjoining provision store and smashed a costly machine. The owner of the provision store alleged that the miscreants who were brandishing unsheathed swords tried to loot the cash from the cash box placed in the front counter of the shop.
When he resisted the miscreants tried to injure him with the attack of a sword. The miscreant fled raising slogans after the people started gathering in the bazaar. The police in heavy strength also rushed to the spot. The police did not try to chase the hooligans.
The protestors after creating disturbance in Attari bazaar rushed towards the OBC bank situated in Phagwara gate conducting routine business. They smashed the entrance door of the bank which was made of fabric glass and then entered in to the bank and smashed goods placed on the tables with the help of unsheathed swords.
Likewise another branch of the bank situated on mandi road was ransacked. The Sikhs also forced the lawyers to close their chambers and shouted slogans in favour of Khalistan and Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.
They tried to force the municipal authorities to close the municipal offices but in vain. They also tried to get the LIC and other offices of the private ventures closed in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Administrative complex.
Petrol Pump owners kept their pumps closed by blocking the entry using barricade of ropes. State and private run bus transports also remained off the road to avoid any type of mishap and loss of property and human lives in the wake of Punjab bandh call.

We are paying a big price for our slow judicial system. An unnecessary and untimely controversy really.

Because for them the enemies are the Muslims, and Jains, Buddhists, Sikhs, Tribals are being brought under the Hindu umbrella. After Muslims it might be the turn of Sikhs. Oh wait, there was 1984.

Dude, What Afzal Guru did, he should have been hanged long time back.
Thanks to minority appeasement politics, he is still alive. Why don't you highlight that part??
Also, you always try to play the victim card!!! Were you ever discriminated from getting jobs? Were you discriminated at school??
Were you not given a rental house just because you are a Muslim?
Let me tell you... I come from Brahmin community and a lot of people wont give us house for rentals.. They think we are too orthodox. We don't get jobs even after securing over 90% in academics... We don't get admissions to best colleges because the seats have been reserved for backward castes, SC/ST and minorities(Includes Muslims)...
Now do we play the victim card? Have you ever heard any forward caste guy whining about discrimination?
From what I have seen, India is for everyone... Yes, there are still bad things in our society... Dalits get discriminated... Forward castest get discriminated, Minorities(Muslims) are sometimes treated as traitors and their religion insulted (I know it happens)...
As a society we are improving... It is much better now that it was in 80's and 90's. It might take another 50yrs before people forget all these minor differences.
One thing I will agree is that RSS does not go well with Abrahamic religions..... That includes both Christians and Muslims... RSS is now an irrelevant organization which has lost its popularity..

So what you are saying is that there is a quota system in India for minorities and some Hindus face discriminiation due to it?
That has to be tough. I believe a quota system should be in place for a specific period so the minorities and whatnot get to the same level as the majority in society and then it should be phased out.
I have never been a firm believer of the quota system.

Off topic.
Born in India doesn't mean that they come under Hinduism. Jainism and Buddhism rejected Hinduism, in fact.

Agreed, these mentioned religions rejected some fundamental concepts of Hinduism. At the same time, they also borrowed some concepts.
RSS/VHP seems to have some members from Jain/Sikh communities too...

The General populace is now in minority with quotas for OBCs (Other Backward Classes), SC (Scheduled Caste), ST (Scheduled Tribe), Muslims, Christians, Women. Overall reservation sometimes crosses 50% mark.
And they do not exclude the economically strong minorities or the so-called Creamy-Layer (Except for OBCs). So even if your parents are millionaire, you can get in through quota. This, I believe, defeats the whole purpose of reservation which is upliftment of economically weaker classes.

exactly! I don't mind giving up on my sit and give advantage to a guy from hilly area who probably walked miles after miles everyday to goto school.
But i hate to see when securing 95% marks, i can't get into a college and my friend, who is minority by birth, who had got equal opportunities as me or more, will get the seats for scoring 60%. (one reason why i had to come to ukraine).
The concept was good. But implementation was horribly wrong. Plus, if a minority student scores good marks, he'l be allotted in generals seat. So we, the general, who has already uneligible for those 50% or more reserved seats, now have to sacrifice from our general quota too.
Yup, in educational sector, this discrimination hurts the students from general quota very much.

That was the original idea.
But it has become a monster now. Who will revoke it and upset the vote bank. No political party wants to stop it.
What is worse is new groups start demanding reservations for themselves. So the pie is getting shorter and shorter for general people.
Other issue is the reservation is not reaching the real needy. The people who enjoyed reservation after independence, their children and grand children are enjoying it.

people need reservation on economic basis rather than caste basis

Sikh intellectual and author of 'A History of the Sikhs', Khushwant Singh, credits members of the RSS with helping and protecting Sikhs who were being targeted by members of the Congress(I) political party during the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots. Singh who otherwise has been critical of the RSS and believes that it is a " communal organization and dangerous to the country's secular fabric"
"RSS has played an honorable role in maintaining Hindu-Sikh unity before and after the murder of Indira Gandhi in Delhi and in other places"
"It was the Congress (I) leaders who instigated mobs in 1984 and got more than 3000 people killed. I must give due credit to RSS and the BJP for showing courage and protecting helpless Sikhs during those difficult days

Please read the judgement and you will find how afzal became victim of political witch hunt and there are many unanswered question in his case.Even if we agree for argument sake with supreme court ruling if muslims had protested in his favour right wing hindutva groups would have been up in arms and so called liberals like joining in chorus blaming congress of vote bank politics.

Anyway, I will let you go to your original post of connecting the news in OP with muslims in India. You have a big issue to discuss and I am not at all interested in it. :)
