View Full Version : Should Khalil play just cos he is a left arm bowler ?

Khalil did a resaonably good job to get rid of 2 important left handed batsmen - but should he play in the next match cos he bowls left arm and provides a variety to the attack - is that an advantage in itself ? or will the WIs be a different /difficult challange for WI ?

plays shud be picked on performance and conditions, not coz hes left or right handed!

i think after a decent performance on debut against the ausies he should play against the west indies.

Pakistan finally played 3 front line bowlers and finally gained sucsess!
I think he bowled extemely well to the left handers and he would be a big asset against the WI, who have alot of them in the team.
I would also give him the new ball.
Like AJ, I don't think one should just get into the team just based on Left Arm or Right Ar, but in current pakistan bowling there is little to choose from between the likes of Rao, Asif, Riaz and Khalil.
So It is an advantage to have Khalil as he provides variation.

Alot of peeps kept goin on and on about 6th bowler, to me that makes bowlers a little slack knowing there is sumone to back them up if they do badly!
with just 5 bowler each bowler has to bowl well and be on his guard
AJ, I can't think of many teams in the world who only go with 5 bowlers. Quite a few of there batsmen can bowl a number of overs when required.
AUS, ENG, NZ, WI, IND, SRI, SA all have about 7 players who can bowl decent overs.

AJ: Easy to say but when one of them does mess up - theu can have an off day, then we all run after coach and cap - in ODIs previous performance can mean little for inexperienced players - there wheels can come off without warning and when you least expect it!
My question was more in terms of what Waheed has answered - Khalil seemed more at home with bowling to left handers and WI have a few - by that reasoning, he should be in the team ( team should remain unchanged, except for a Younis<->Akmal change )

Khalil is a very ordinary bowler. He lacks pace and has no variety. However, given our limited resources in Aus, it would appear to be a choice between him and Azhar - I would definitely go for Khalil.

if wasim worked with khalil you would see a very different left armer , firstly one that could be swinging it into the right handers, but wasim wont work with him because he is not indian, the pcb wont give him enough money.

I agree wid Waheed 100% Khalil was bowling good line and lenght or Hogg and katich. and WI have a good # of Lefties

He should play as he did a reasonable job, better than Brett Lee.

Lee was a disaster - for once I was glad that Akhtar wasnt there and our bolwers could concentrate on line and length

I think we shouldn't play Akhtar in One dayers at all. Just tell him to concentrate on test matches and his fitness.
No because he isnt good enough. PLay your best bowlers.

Gary he is not our best bowler in ODI's.
i was referring to Khalil.
AJ, its like the 7 batsmen theory. I would rather 4 top class bowlers, one genuine all rounder and 5 top class batsman plus Akmal.
This means everyone has to perform which is not a bad thing. Its also a positive sign and shows u place faith in ur bowlers. However I do think Taufeeq and Salman should work on their bowling.
How about Yoyo, he could be a Ganguly for Pak lol

Yoyo is as laid back as Inzi, I would like some one who is agressive and have positive attitude.
I was being sarcastic. Younis Khan should be captain of Pakistan. They need a captain who when the opposition is down goes in for the kill.

Thnx for asking Amjid bhai. Password issues, really.
I think he should play. He evidently troubled the left-handers. I think he should be given the new ball along with Rana

I think Khalil should play against the Windies for sure and maybe open the bowling with Rana as someone already suggested. This is to counter the Windies Lefties: Gayle, Hinds, Lara and Chanderpaul which are only broken up in the middle order by one rightie: Sarwan, who is doubtful for the game anyway. So Khalil can be more then handy against the openers and the duo of Chanderpaul-Lara.

well i would agree with most of u that he should play..
Not only bcs he provides variety but he played well againt the Aussies...
Remember he is a good bowler especially to the left handers...and the windies have lots of them...
if he can pick a couple in the miidle overs it should be agreat plus

Gary there is one item that we actually both agree on!

The way things are going today, Khalil may play a big part in Paks victory chances.

I was very impressed by his composure. He remained calm, and bowled quite well again. It definetely very heartening to see our back up bowlers performing so well

can anyone explain the science behind using khalil in the WI because many of their batsmen are lefties?
i mean how does it help to bowl a lefty bowler to a lefty batsman?
Daoud
1st February 2005, 11:02
I dont think theres any science. Just that he bowls better to lefties. He can move the ball away from lefties, but cant bring it back to righties. Hard to explain why, but its understandable in a way. Maybe he could try coming around the wicket
