KARACHI: Former Test captains Waqar Younis and Zaheer Abbas appear to have been given the nod by the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) top brass for appointments with the senior team but not necessarily starting from the Sri Lankan tour from March 13.
"All the indications are that the Chairman Shaharyar Khan and Director Cricket Operations, Saleem Altaf had reached a consensus on appointing Zaheer as Pakistan manager and Waqar as the bowling coach," a board source said.
"The two have been picked from a shortlist of candidates with Waqar’s appointment also being backed by captain Inzamam-ul-Haq who feels that with young bowlers coming into the national side, Waqar can play a big role in their development at the top level," the source added.
"While Zaheer’s appointment is more or less confirmed starting from the Sri Lankan tour there is some discussion still on Waqar particularly about his tenure. The board is certain to at least announce the manager this week. While the bowling coach issue might be put before the ad-hoc committee at its meeting on March 28," the source further added.
Pakistani selectors have been working on a policy of slowly injecting the senior team with young bowlers with Mohammad Asif the latest addition, while there could be more new faces for the Sri Lanka tour. "Inzamam feels that since he and coach Bob Woolmer are working with the batsmen, there is a need to have a specialist bowler to work with the bowlers," told the source.

I would have hired Rashid Latif as a selector(if we were to get a full time committee, though I know this has no relavance to the topic), and Aaqib Javed as a bowling coach. Look at all his "examples" or "predictions" or "apprentices" with Asif, The U19 guys, they all seem to impress Aaqib and us.

EXACTLY!!!! That gives a great opportunity to keep on blasting Wasim for NOT doing enough for country :19:
Anyways, i really admire Waqar and Zaheer Abbas and i really hope they will bring some positive changes to the team. Zaheer's presence with the squad may prove beneficial for youngsters and Waqar's appointment is a GREAT news for Asif, Rana, Gul, Sami (MAYBE :9: ), Arafat etc
Let's hope it all goes ahead....

Hopefully there is some truth this article...
Waqar will be an assest to the team, his never say die approach to bowling, togather with his skill will help out our bowlers both our new comers and experienced campaigners.
Lets hope he can transform Samantha(Sami) back to the bowler that he was while he was captaining the side..

i hope waqar can teach the younger bowlers on using the new ball better. i know asif and rana use it well, but shoiab can't swing it as much as waqar and wasim used to. anothe rthing that i have noticed is that although our bowlers r improving, their skills of reverse swinging the ball r becming less and less prominent. i dont know if its my imagination or is is for real. but i hope waqar can tackle both these problems

We can't reverse swing the ball anymore because we use the crappy Kookaburra balls that do nothing for the bowlers at all.

Aqib is doing good with younger bowler though he is also a good option but I think waqar shud be better

The best think I loved aqib is that he never mentioned in the media that he is DOING THIS AND THAT for U-19….and he also never mentioned in the press that he will like to be a bowling coach for Pakistan national team. Truly a great guy.

ya I like Aquib javed
he has good cricketing knowlede and good brain also and he is not very selfish either
Waqar's role is expected to last provisionally for 1 year - and he has stated that he would like to be part of the set up upto and beyond the world cup.
I am pleased - yet disappointed. Disappointed that we will no longer be a listening to the jam of a Waqar Younis as a the commentator

aww come ON! what the HAELL was the PCB thinking anyway? no more waqar in the commentary box? what are we going to hear in our ears now?

Yeah, not to mention, his grasp on various accents while speaking English ;)
Seriously though, I believe Waqar might not be a good choice for a bowling coach. You may call it anything but I believe Pakistanis will not give as much respect and attention to another Pakistani in any capacity (Coach, trainer, etc.) than they would to a foreigner (Miandad v Woolmer is a classic example). Therefore, if we had a foreign bowling coach, I think that would've been better. This is just my opinion but lets see how things shape up and what affect does it have on our bowlers.

When you hire assitant coaches, they need to be able to compliment our head coach. We are bringing in two guys with such big egos and politics in their career.
Waqar fought with Wasim over a decade and those two pretty much spilt our team up. They are one factor for that WC debacle because they broke the team in half and destroyed any team coeheisiveness we had.
Zaheer Abbas's whole ambition during his career was to become captain. He would try anything to get Imran sacked, and what a mistake that was seeing as Imran was our greatest captain ever.
Than foreigner vs the local man. These are two controversial characters and I can see them just getting into fights with Woolmer, and this can destroy any chances of us winning WC 2007. I fear for the worst for Pakistan with these two coming in to be honest.
The best solution to counter such a problem, is to let Bob Woolmer have a say in the selection process. They need to find someone that compliments Woolmer's style of teaching, therefore he would know best what he likes and should be able to select his own coaching team.

I dont think it was Waqar who was the politician. I think it was more Wasim then Waqar. Wasim kept Waqar out of the team for a long period of time. As we all know Wasim was the wolf in sheeps clothing in the match fixing Saga. GQ! I think the Pakistan Bowler barring Shoaib will have allot respect for Waqar. He was the master of art which Pakistan bowlers these days cannot do really well. I think its a really good move by PCB to appoint him. I am not sure about Mr. Zaheer, as long as Bob is calling the shots we will be in a good shape.

Maybe we should hire Botham so our bowlers can start reversing the ball from the very first over.
