The 74-year-old was admitted to a Sao Paulo hospital suffering from a urinary infection on Tuesday after undergoing surgery on kidney stones at the beginning of the month.

Doctors at the Albert Einstein Hospital had only recently said that Pele was in a stable condition with his illness, but news agency AFP claims that the three-time World Cup winner's condition is now worsening.

Following his recent discharge on 15 November, Pele's personal aide Jose Fornos Rodrigues had told Reuters: "He made some tests and will be discharged tomorrow. Everything is fine."

Pele is widely regarded as the greatest player of all time, having made 656 competitive appearances for Santos, whilst also holding the record for Brazil's top goalscorer with 77 goals in 92 games.
