SLAMABAD: Parliamentary Secretary for Finance Khawaja Sheraz Mahmood and his three assistants assaulted Joint Finance Secretary Iftikhar Malik on Thursday afternoon.
The beating started from Mahmood’s office, and continued in the Finance Ministry corridors, before climaxing at the victim’s office. This led to an immediate meeting of the Finance Ministry’s top bureaucracy, while staff gathered in the corridors and outside the ministry to condemn the incident.
Finance Secretary-General Navid Ahsan immediately spoke to the principal secretary to the Prime Minister Javed Sadik Malik to report the matter to Prime Minster Shaukat Aziz. However, the parliamentary secretary reportedly tendered his apologies for the incident within hours of the incident.
Malik confirmed that in the absence of PM’s adviser on finance and the minister of state, the parliamentary secretary was to get a briefing on Thursday afternoon during National Assembly questions. A Finance Ministry source said the parliamentary secretary lost his temper at not getting a prompt reply to a National Assembly question from the concerned wing headed by the joint secretary. But Malik said the issue was his (10 minute) delayed arrival for briefing in Mahmood’s office.
According to a source, when the officer entered the parliamentary secretary’s office, the latter was already visibly perturbed. The joint secretary tried to explain that he was late because of matters concerning a workshop to be attended by the PM’s adviser.
But Mahmood reacted angrily, allegedly howling “get lost”. Malik is said to have insisted that as he was a senior officer he should not be subjected to such a dressing down. The two public officials exchanged heated words, resulting in Mahmood attacking Malik, with the help of his three assistants. “I was attacked as I was getting out of the parliamentary secretary’s office,” the joint secretary said. Soon after the incident the officer rushed to his seniors, who condemned the incident in unison. However, later in the evening, according to Malik, the parliamentary secretary apologised for the incident in the office of secretary finance. “The issue now stands settled,” the Malik said.
