Muttiah Muralitharan, who is currently in Australia recovering from surgery on his problematic right shoulder, is set to marry an Indian girl, Mathimalar Ramamurthy, in a ceremony in Chennai on March 21, according to a report in the Hindustan Times.
The bride, 24, is a relative from Murali's female line of descent, as per the ancient Tamil custom of seeking brides from among cousins. Her father, Mathimalar, is one of the directors of Malar Hospital, a multi-speciality hospital in Adyar.
Murali's father is the owner of a biscuit factory in Kandy, and the family also owns the well-known Ramya Hotel in Tiruchi in southern Tamil Nadu. As the only Tamil in the Sri Lankan cricket team, Murali's ties with southern India are strong.
