West indies have won series and lead 3-1 with this last match. All eyes will be on one man today the home town hero Brian Lara as he plays his last Odi match on his home ground. (no games played here in WC 2007).

I hope lara goes out with a bang.

Consistency has been their problem ... best chance to prove to the world that they are back!

Amjid Javed
28th May 2006, 16:48
If west indies had been on the ball in the 1st game like they were in last 3 matches they would be 4-0.

both sides will make changes but i agree west indies should continue with same consistancy.

Easa

West Indies need to go in with their full strength side. A 4-1 win will give them alot more confidence then a 3-2 one, that is if India can win against a second string side.

I think it'll be 4-1 by the end of today.

Or maybe its just one of those ODI pitches which isn't easy to hit boundaries on, in which case a player as limited as Dwayne Smith wouldn't do much. It will also be difficult to chase on this pitch the way things are going, seems like a good toss to lose to me.

You go watch his numerous failures. There have been some pretty amusing ones but one that sticks in my mind was when he hit a six off Harmison over long on, very early in his innings, so Hussain was just sent to that position and Smith did it again the next over completely unaware that - shock horror - in test cricket you have to actually have a look at the field before you try to slog a better ball over the same area, and was caught out for a low score

A very mindless player, but he has an occasional good knock where his slogging comes off so he is 'beastly' apparently

Pietersen is very different, he knows when a ball is there to be hit and knows when one isnt. His improvement has come from his better undertsanding of spin bowling and turning from a terrible starter into a good one. He is still very legside, but having a favourite area is absolutely fine if you can actually read the game consistently like Pietersen can.

Dwayne Smith is just a flash in the pan player

Pietersen is very different, he knows when a ball is there to be hit and knows when one isnt. His improvement has come from his better undertsanding of spin bowling and turning from a terrible starter into a good one. He is still very legside, but having a favourite area is absolutely fine if you can actually read the game consistently like Pietersen can.

Dwayne Smith is just a flash in the pan player

Dwayne Smith is psychotic, in terms of having a brutal personality he probably comes to the closest to Shahid Afridi in matching him.

Does a player never improve? I remember when Pietersen burst onto the scene, he was all legside as well. Now, he is one of the best batman in the world.

Inconsistent? He bats at number 7 or 8, there are very few consistent players at that spot. He mostly just has to hit out.

Once again, your argument is complete TOSH.

so what improvements has he made? :))

Sreesanth has a habit of trying to sledge the batsman. Unfortunately for him......

a) He is crap. Not really much point in sledging if you are going wicketless at 6 per over.

b) He just doesn't have the look. If you are going to sledge you need to at least be slightly 'hard'. Sreesanth and 'hard' just don't go together. If someone whose nostrils are the size of his backside starts talking down to you......the worst that will happen is that you wont be able to contain yourself from laughter.

Sreesanth certainly has a lot to learn.

so what improvements has he made? :))

Believe it or not his off side play has actually improved since he debuted. I've been following his progress since he debuted a few years back and in ODIs especially he just tried hitting everything to the legside. Now there are shots through the offside, when slogging though he still does prefer his leg side mid wicket area, but I have seen him hit big shots recently against Zimbabwe on the offside.

You miss the point completely, the point is with offside and legside play is not ability because Smith has the ability to play through the offside. Watch his debut century against South Africa and you will know what I'm talking about. Its more psychological and the mentally being able to tell youself what you will do to each ball and where you will play it.

As it happens telling yourself you will play a ball on offstump or just outside on the offside, like Smith has been doing is noteworthy, regardless of the opposition.

Granted he is not as limited as he once was, but he is still wildly inconsistent and wouldnt get anywhere near a decent side.

Comparing him to other big hitters in ODI cricket such as Dhoni, Pathan, Gilchrist, Pietersen and Afridi, Smith offers very little to a side

If there is anything in his arc then yes he'll dispatched it, anything that means he can't swipe it accross the line and he's in trouble. He's a one dimensional player.

His fielding has always been nothing short of world class. His bowling has improved considerably and has gone from a part-timer to someone who the captain regularly turns to for economical overs or for a breakthrough. He bowls stump to stump and full length and has added a few yards of pace to his bowling too.

Just generally. He can do either kind of innings, I remember some 'beastly' hitting in the test and ODI away series against South Africa from Giles.

The point is that just because a cricketer just slogs a lot doesnt mean he is necessarily worth more to a team than a grafter like Giles, who is a no.8 who can hit the ball hard but still maintain some consistency.

Another point is that no.8s DO NOT have to hit out, particularly as a collapse in an ODI might leave the no.8 batting 30 overs in, and he needs to be able to adapt to the situation, something I feel Smith would not be able to do. If a run chase goes horribly wrong then the no.8 might be relied on (with plenty of overs left) to try and build the total sensibly as well.
