Twenty matches, one quadruple century, two triple centuries, the fastest Test hundred, the highest successful fourth-innings chase, and ten draws. That pretty much sums up the history of the pitch at the Antigua Recreation Ground, one where bowlers usually turn to pea-shooters. If the last Test played here is any indication - when eight batsmen ransacked hundreds - the bowlers might as well enjoy the sights and sounds of the country. Only batsmen will mourn the passing of the ARG as an international venue at the end of this match.
West Indies have lost just three Tests here. With 365 beaches dotting the country, visiting teams have probably been a bit distracted. India's last visit here produced 1142 runs, over just two innings. VVS Laxman, who made 130, will have fond memories of that game, as will Wasim Jaffer and Rahul Dravid, who made half-centuries. It was also the third occasion when all 11 players bowled in an innings, as the game petered out to a most boring draw.
Two days back, there was a distinct tinge of green on the pitch. On the eve of the match, there was hardly any. Yet, India would be encouraged by the fact that spinners could come into play later in the game. Nicky Boje and Stuart MacGill have had a good time here, both in West Indian defeats. England A played a game here in February this year and managed a result, thanks to Gareth Batty's seven first-innings wickets. Rahul Dravid has already hinted that the team was veering towards picking two spinners.
Anil Kumble's last visit was highlighted by him bowling with his face bandaged; now he returns as the spearhead. Harbhajan Singh didn't play then; this time he may need to shoulder a large portion of the burden. India's bowling problems mainly revolve around Irfan Pathan, who, ironical as it may sound, may be fitted into the side for his batting. With the surface likely to be pancake-flat, and this being just the first Test, India might prefer to pick five bowlers, just to distribute the load and prevent tiring them out.
For West Indies, Corey Collymore passed a fitness test this morning and could partner Fidel Edwards with the new ball. There could be a toss up between Ian Bradshaw, who troubled the Indians in the one-day series, and Jerome Taylor, who comes with a bit of additional pace. The fourth bowler is likely to be Dave Mohammed, the left-arm chinaman. He's played just two Tests before, managed only three wickets, and it's tempting to think that Indian batsmen, oriental wrists and all, would make mincemeat of him. But one just needs to look at India's previous Test to realise the folly of such a line of thinking - they were felled by Shaun Udal, 37-year old three-Test veteran, in their own backyard.
Teams (probable)
West Indies 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Runako Morton, 3 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 4 Brian Lara (capt), 5 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 6 Dwayne Bravo, 7 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 8 Jerome Taylor, 9 Fidel Edwards, 10 Corey Collymore, 11 Dave Mohammed.
India 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Wasim Jaffer, 3 Rahul Dravid (capt), 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 VVS Laxman, 6 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (wk), 7 Irfan Pathan, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Anil Kumble, 10 Sreesanth, 11 Munaf Patel.

A good history for the Windies. And I think Indian team is full of unexperienced guys so I hope Windies will take advantages of them and get another win over the Indians :D

why have a fracking game on a pitch so dull as this? it the pitch is a graveyard for bowlers, i can understand the motivation to use it as an ODI venue, but for a test match... thats just absurd. Its kinda like taking 5 days of your life and crumpling them like a piece of paper, just before tossing it into the bin.

Exactly mate.
I wouldn't be suprised if Lara scores another triple. This pitch is as flat as they come ; I bet I could go there and make some runs.
Let's hope it has some green in it to make this a contest.
These would be my teams:
Gayle, Ganga, Sarwan, Lara, Chanderpaul, Bravo, Ramdin, Taylor, Edwards, Mohammad, Colleymore.
Sehwag, Jaffer, Dravid, Laxman/Kaif, Yuvraj, Dhoni, Pathan, Singh, Kumble, Munaf, Sreesanth.

You certainly would if the opening bowler is bowling at 115 kph ;-)
Pathan better hope he gets some swing otherwise, things could get VERY ugly

Indians go for PACE against Windies, Irfan Khan Pathan has been DROPPED and Indian EXPRESS VRV Singh makes debut :D
India's another matchwinner Harbhajan Singh has also been DROPPED :)
Indians go for all out PACE (Munaf, Sree and VRV are all capable of bowling above 140 kph).
Indian squad: MS Dhoni, R Dravid, W Jaffer, M Kaif, A Kumble, VVS Laxman, MM Patel, V Sehwag, VR Singh, S Sreesanth, Yuvraj Singh

Windies squad is not all that bad either:
IDR Bradshaw, DJ Bravo, S Chanderpaul, CD Collymore, FH Edwards, D Ganga, CH Gayle, BC Lara, D Mohammed, D Ramdin, RR Sarwan
Bowling attack: Bradshaw, Edwards, Collymore, Bravo and D Mohammed
Batting is pretty strong too, Gayle is in good form. Lara, Sarwan and Chander make solid middle order and Bravo has been in very good batting form (batted well against Aussies), Ramdin is pretty handy with bat as well.
Pathan and Harbhajan DROPPED. :))) :)))
India have elected to bat first, Edwards to bowl the first over.
0-0 (1)
Good start.
Pathan and Harbhajan DROPPED. :))) :)))
Thats a shame for Indian fans. Their two fastest bowlers MIA!
Two fours hit by Sehwag.
As soon as he is in the whites, he's a completely different player. Looks much more confident, to be honest.
10-0 (2.3)

Average is around 88 MPH.
Laxman GONE. Bravo strikes, Ramdin takes the catch.
72-3, Yuvraj, the man in form walks in.
Lara opting for Gayle, even when they have a specialist spinner, Mohammad.
Dravid 4 from 30 balls with a deadly strike rate of 13!!! I remember against England he made 30 runs from like 120 odd balls.
Dravid playing a beastly knock, 5 (34).

This wicket has more for the bowlers than expected. For the 2 ODIs v Zimbabwe the balls were jumping up on the batsmen for all areas. Its no more than an average batting strip. Not suprised the Indians have lost some early wickets.

Neutral.
Once again, Dhoni shows us that when the ball is doing even a tiny bit, he can't do ****. It's still pretty early in his test match career, but with his average glove work, he needs to bat really good to cement his place in the team.

Garbage from Cricinfo"
Chris Gayle has given West Indies a flying start and has pushed India on the back foot. The inexperienced attack wilted under his onslaught and second session should be an interesting one. But for now , as the teams head for lunch, here is a Cricinfo Stat fact for you: Among away venues where India have played 3 tests or more, St. Jonh's, Antigua, is only one of four away venues where India have a 100% undefeated record. They have, prior to this test, played 3 tests at Antigua and remained unbeaten in all three tests, while they also have a 100% undefeated record at Kandy (3 tests), Auckland (4 tests) and Georgetown (6 tests). Will that record remain unbroken or will Lara's men tarnish it? Join us for the post lunch session, this is Sriram Veera signing off for the moment. Sajan Nair will take up the live commentary in the second session.

Gayle played brilliantly, now its Lara's turn. :D:D
28.6 Sreesanth to Lara, SIX, hooked away brilliantly! It was short and rising, on the off stump line, Lara shifted his weight back and pulled it over midwicket. The crowd are up on thier feet!
28.5 Sreesanth to Lara, FOUR, one-handed drive to cover fence! It was a low full-toss, outside the off stump, lara bent his knees, shaped up to drive, his top-hand came off the handle but he still found the placement and the power

It will depend if they can bowl out ndians under 200 in the second innings...
Chanderpaul gone
63 b2 0
Chanderpaul c Dhoni b Sehwag (25 runs, 80 balls, 3x4, 0x6)
He seemed to be struggling a bit there. We need to try and get another 100 runs....if Bravo bats the innings we could get even more.
Bravo wacks Kumble for three 4s in one over.
West Indies now 275 for 5 (34 ahead).
Bravo not out 67
Ramdin not out 2

if WI team has actually improved,we will only know wen they play some other team....but frankly even in the ODI's they din do anything spectacular ,infact I thot both teams played badly....Only Bravo to me is the real positive to come out of this tour!
Sarwan has been pretty good as well

did u guys see that srisanth delivery, that he bowled from boundary line almost....
i am sure that delivery will enjoy a legendry status in the history of cricket.....
what aggression he showed...kamal hi.....
all day he went for more then 7/over in test match and yet the final ball he bowled, aggresssion again.....it is a pity that he could not make it any faster then 130 km/h.......times tested speed barrier for indian fast bowlers.....but atleast he tried....

What the hell you talking about? WI outclassed INDIA in just about every department it aint funnyyyyyy..... So much for Dravid the matchwinner and his stupid tactics :19:

If WI didnt do anything spectacular then India were downright poor and pathetic in the series.
And play begins for day 3....
Und India take new ball ....
The Result ?
83.4 Sreesanth to Bradshaw, FOUR!!, beautifully cut away, gets across and neatly chops it to deep backward point
and it continues:
84.3 Patel to Ramdin, FOUR!!, genuine edge, in the corridor and kisses the outside edge but it runs wide of slips and onto the third man fence

83.4 Sreesanth to Bradshaw, FOUR!!, beautifully cut away, gets across and neatly chops it to deep backward point
That would be And with an A... :26:
btw, 86 run lead - not enough to bother India - Sehwag can knock it off in a few overs - once the lead goes above 200 , then India have a big big battle on their hands.

Qaafee bardasht karna parta hai logon ko....
And India strike back...
Patel to Ramdin, out Caught by Patel!! good length, just outside off and draws Ramdin forward as he looks to defend it, the away movement does the rest, thin edge and Dhoni takes a low catch! D Ramdin c M Patel b M Patel 26(68) 4s-3 6s-0
Lead = 90, WI = 331/7

120 to 150 lead would be enough for WI what do you all think
Normally, a mixture of Sehwag and Dravid could knock that off in no time but given whats happened in this match so far, WI would be odds on favs - However, right now, they will struggle to get to that lead....
The lead upto 110 now:
89.2 VRV Singh to Bradshaw, FOUR!!, outside off and Bradshaw drives, down to third man
89.2 VRV Singh to Bradshaw, no ball, leg byes, FOUR!!, off the thigh pads and this time it eludes Dhoni
88.5 Patel to Dave Mohammed, FOUR!!, gets forward and slams it to deep extra cover. The lead has now crossed 100

Gayle, Sarwan, Lara, and Bravo can score a lot in less amount of balls.
hasan316
4th June 2006, 14:41
89.2 Singh to Bradshaw, FOUR, four more! good length delivery outside the off stump, nothing special there, just a slanting delivery, Bradshaw drives off the front-foot, ball kisses the outside edge and rolls away through the gap between slip and gully
89.2 Singh to Bradshaw, 5 no balls, short of a good length delivery, drifting down the leg side, Bradshaw stands his gound and has a whip at it but he fails to make contact, ball clips the thigh pad and races away past the diving keeper, it's a no-ball aswell, five runs added to the total!
Bradshaw goes - WI lead by 118 ( 2 wickets in hand )
Any more runs from now are a bonus but 118 lead is always a very healthy one.
West Indies are well and trully on top of this match.
WI and SL both showing up potentially stronger teams but both have let go of good advantages - if you consider that India have a newbie bowling attack, I would have expected Lara and others to have done better than current position.
WI 371 All out - lead is 130.

2.6 Edwards to Sehwag, SIX, OMG! amazing slash over point for a six! It was short and outside the off stump, about chest high, or maybe a shade lower, and Sehwag threw his bat at it, and it screamed fast and flat over backward point!

16.6 Collymore to Sehwag, no run, short delivery pitched close to the off stump line, Sehwag leans back and cuts hard but once again he fails to get it past the fielder at gully
16.5 Collymore to Sehwag, no run, defended outside the off stump
16.4 Collymore to Sehwag, no run, width offered outside the off stump and Sehwag cuts late, a good looking and extremely well timed shot but the placement was poor, ball went straight to the fielder at gully

Damn you Sehwag! One of my fave players to watch. Now Dravid will begin playing his usual slow knock and take the pressure off the Windies bowlers again.

Sri Lankan curry? Nah.......don't particularly like South Indian/Sri Lankan food.
But yes....I am West Indian and Sri Lankan while these two games go on.

Jaffer seems to be rather suspect against Edwards bowling, though i think he has good measure of Bradshaw and Correy now. I think its a blessing that Edwards is out with an injury. Any update on his status? Is he going to return? coz if he does not, there is a good chance India would escape with a draw, infact i wont rule out an Indian victory in the absence of Edwards.

true, save for chanderpaul, all the other batsmen are too attacking to actually attempt saving a match... but that is still much longer down the line. india still needs to accumulate runs like enron executives accumulated wealth :)))

stupid punk! at least we could have kept a scoring rate in excess of 3.5 an over as long as laxman and jaffer were around. now dravid is gonna play well but he will not be easing the throttle as much. observe that both india and west indies lasted a comparable number of overs (west indies played only 6 more than india) but it was their higher scoring rate that hoisted heir total. thats a trick india is missing every now and then. with sehwag's dimissal, according ot the last statistical study, indian scoring rate drops to about 2.8 as opposed to a 3.8 when he is at the crease.

go watch a one day dude... i think he is playing himself in, and at best, his strike rate will probably approach 40, never higher. All i am concerned is that maybe this over cautious approach is costing us runs that are there to be made (i.e. maybe a little risk can be afforded as the pitch is becoming progressively insipid).
btw... he averages the third highest amongst all contemporary batsmen and i will accept that over a better strike rate any day.
That was a good hundred by Jaffer.
Let's hope the Windies get some early wickets today.

Well done Jaffer. Looked a decent player against us, certainly seems a better option as opener than Gambhir, Uthappa or Dravid.
Of the above, 1 is crap, 1 is inexperienced, 1 is a lot better at no.3 or 4 playing the anchor. Jaffer is the man to open with Veru!
