This is the slow and painful death of English ODI cricket......when this happens, with Pakistan waiting in the wings....how low can England go or will Pakistan make it possible for England to resurrect this diabolical team into Australia-beaters AGAIN????????

Tbh it looks a lot better now than it did 10 overs ago, but this XI has hardly any batsmen that are good at chasing, Tresco maybe, if he gets off to a good start then the chase is on, if not...
caught behind
James
28th June 2006, 12:43
Hundred up for Jayawardene off 82 balls
Been a tremendous innings.
James
28th June 2006, 12:48
And promptly, Jayawardene goes caught and bowled
220-6, and suddenly England are back in contention with 2 new players at the crease. If Kp and Collingwood were available for the run chase we could have an even bigger chance.
Easa
28th June 2006, 12:50
Why is Pietersen not playing? Fantastic hundred for Jaya, second on the trot.
James
28th June 2006, 12:51
Pietersen has a knee injury. It's minor, they just didn't want to risk him for what is really a meaningless game. Were the scoreline 2-1 to either side he probably would have been playing.
Rana
28th June 2006, 12:52
probably wont get 300 now!
too many wickets have fallen at wrong times!
James
28th June 2006, 12:57
You see, there is potential in this England ODI team. Little periods like this with the older ball show you that if they were tighter with the new ball than they could really put the shutters down on LOI innings a lot more regularly than they do.
England need to learn that batsmen should be allowed to rely on bowlers putting them in a good position, and bowlers should be allowed to rely on having something to bowl at.
England dont put the 3 disciplines of batting, bowling and fielding all together in one dayers often enough, we usually get 1 or 2 of them right which is nowhere near good enough. But its plain to see that if/when they can be bothered to build for the future and focus on this, they can be a consistently good ODI side..

47.5 Ali to Bandara, no run, widish outside off, Bandara chases but misses
47.4 Ali to Bandara, SIX!!, slower delivery, pitched up, Bandara just stands and lofts it over long on, dispatched long long way in the stands!
47.3 Ali to Bandara, FOUR!!, another full toss, on the off, Bandara gets the thick edge racing down to third man boundary!
47.2 Ali to Maharoof, 1 run, drives it to cover, just over Strauss in the infield
47.1 Ali to Maharoof, FOUR!!, full toss, outside off, Maharoof drives it over the infield to sweeper cover, one bounce over the rope! bad delivery and punished!

Cook looking good in his ODI debut.
6.6 Vaas to Cook, FOUR!!, again the overpitched delivery on the legs, Cook picks it nicely over the infield to mid wicket, good over for England!
6.4 Vaas to Cook, FOUR!!, pitched up, on the legs, Cook tickles it down to fine leg, fine leg fielder is too wide to cut it off!
We need a wicket soon/

Jayasuriya to Jones, SIX, big swing to leg high to deep midwicket where Malinga on the rope could not cling on … even had he held it, he would have been on the line. The first boundary since the UK had a Conservative government ... so it seems

England used to be at least competitive at home in ODIs but they just seem lost now. Why they keep on playing Plunkett is baffling. I guess its the Fletcher inftatuation with someone who can hold a bat. But if they guy isnt doing his primary job well is he worth the odd 20s and 30s which by the way are rare anyway.
To be honest as a Pakistan fan this is good because it must be affecting the English morale.
