Shoaib in attack on team-mates Feb 2 2005
PAKISTAN fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has launched a scathing attack on his team-mates and accused India of trying to discredit him ahead of the Test series between the two sides.
The 'Rawalpindi Express' has said that he has been the only player performing in recent times for the national side and that the rest of the team had done nothing to support him.
Shoaib said, "In the last few series I have been expected to make the team win. The other 10 players don't do anything. I am made the scapegoat each time.
"My discipline and my performance are questioned. It's a specific lobby that is doing this.
"I think that if we are playing for the country then the entire team should do their bit."
The 29-year-old is currently back in Pakistan recovering from a hamstring injury that forced him to miss the latter stages of the VB Series in Australia where his team-mates have progressed through to the final against the hosts.
Photographs were taken of him in a nightclub during the Test series against the Australians and Shoaib believes they were part of a conspiracy by India to destroy his confidence ahead of the forthcoming series, which begins this month.
"All these reports and these photos have come from India," he said. "This is being done to shatter my confidence."

I feel sorry for him - he talks a lot but when he is going, he is an awesome bowler - I feel we should just leave him and give him some breathing space - for that to happen, he will need to stop speaking to the press....

Give him some space - our bowling attack looks rather toothless without him.

I would love to shut him up by giving him a good beating but can't afford tiicket to Pak at the moment.
One thing for Actor talks cr@p and is full of himself. I don't feel sorry for him a bit, because even if it was a conspiracy by India this Actor should have taken a low profile knowing he's headlines material. But does he?? he still does all the usual cr@p talk, the showboy antics, the poor behaviour, attitude and commitment etc which dosen't take a genius to realise are poor.

i actually feel sorry for the guy even though i dont like his behaviour or attitude... i think too much attention has gotten to his head he needs to realise that he should keep his thoughts to himself its not always humpty glory to go and tell the press what you feel like, i think that saying things like that against his OWN team is rather sad he thinks he is being blamed for the teams performance but have there been ANY allegations or fingers pointed at him?? i think he wants people to feel sorry for him yet hes 29 a grown man wid a childs brain... he needs to sort his mentality out seriously before he gets chucked off the team... and i dont thin shahriyar khan is gona do much good 'having words with shoaib' as said in his interview on cricinfo coz everyone knows its gona go through one ear and out the other.... tut tut
ps. i hope i havent offended any akhter fans

dnt know about the 10 players but the rest of the 4 bowlers definatly dnt do nothing.
I think everyone is sick of mentioning that actually Kaneria was the leading wicket taker for us and bowled almost twice as many overs as the great injured one.

If I was photographed in a nightclub, with a bottle in one hand, and a certain part of a female anatomy in the other, I'd probably be making the same excuses as him!!!
Khair, I say let him stew for a bit andget himself fit (mentally/physically) for the Indian series.
After all, we DO NEED HIM.
Geordie Ahmed
2nd February 2005, 22:29
Oxi i fail to understand how he can possibly get fit in time! the Indian series is not too long away and he is far from being fit AND he is not helping things by chatting to the media
Oxy
2nd February 2005, 22:34
Prize jerk he is-but we arent blessed with depth, so until Pak are able to drop Shoaib and select someone equally as good as him, we have no choice but to persist with him...and his gob!
Geordie Ahmed
2nd February 2005, 22:36
You dont have to put up with the gob (just ask Souness) i know on his day he is lethal BUT i dont want him in the side if he is not fully fit (that applies to all)
zorawar
2nd February 2005, 22:37
Geordie agree with you on that one... half-fit players should never be played

People are too harsh on poor Shoaib. He actually performed in the first 2 tests unlike many others and people still find room for criticism and expect him to not respond to it? :-*
razzler
3rd February 2005, 01:11
Mona if he wants to respond the best possible way is to get fit, stop jerking arround, listen to the greats and more knowlegable people, and perform on the field not going arround shotting his mouth in the press.
catwoman
3rd February 2005, 04:45
He does perform on the field and did so quite recently in fact in the tests versus Australia. His bowling did the talking in Australia. Isn't that enough to shut the critics up?
razzler
3rd February 2005, 05:18
Yes he did perform on the field but why in the world does he have to go shooting his mouth in the press that he didn't got any support from the rest of the ten players when most will agree that Kaneria worked even harder than him. What does Kaneria says that I will try even harder to get into the ODI squad for the Indian series. Thats the attitude that is required from every Pakistani player.

If Pak win VB series ( if.. ) Shoaib may find himself more marginalized than ever - ofcourse, his use in the longer form of cricket is more beneficial to Pak but he just doesnt have the physical fitness to go the distance - he is human and his body is not upto the challenge
I am afraid we are witnessing the demise of a good player...

It's that time of the week again, bump up the thread for yesteryear, well this one does actually have some relevance. This goes back to Shoaib whining about his team players not contributing. Well at least three years down the line, another Indian series coming up, are we likely to see a repeat of the above quotes on the flattest pitches in India against India???

I agree the last series we won was because he bowled brilliantly. Inzimams downfall came with shoaibs injury.
Plus if you recall how horribly everyone played on that Aussie tour. The whole team stunk it up. Only shoaib received any praise from the Aussies. The batting totally failed. the bowling didn't support Him. i believe shoaib was the only one with any impact. The board made him the scapegoat again for his off the field antics and the rest was history.
remember this report is very old.

Some people cant live without hating Shoaib. They're so full of hatred. If this means they have to dig up a 3 year old thread to hate him some more then they will. You'd think that they need a life but this is their life.

maybe their hatred is simply displacement activity designed to keep their minds off the fact that Pakistan seem to be rubbish without Shoaib
