We’re Feeling Angry After Innings Loss
Jul 31, 2006 | Younis Khan
I hope I won’t have to feel like I have over the last two days very often! The innings defeat to England has hurt us all and we are keen to put things right.
We are not just hurting as a team, we are angry. We are angry at ourselves for losing in less than three days at Old Trafford. We all know we are much better than what we managed last week.
Winning and losing happens. Thankfully we have won more than we’ve lost in recent months but it’s losing in that manner that hurts the most. We have all lost many matches but not in that way. We haven’t felt like this since Australia when we lost our last Test series in 2004-05.
The boys will come back, I know we will. There are two matches left and we are more than capable of putting in some performances between us. Remember how England lost heavily at Lord’s in the first Test in the Ashes last year? They came back and won the series 2-1 and it could easily have been 3-1 if it wasn’t for the saving draw at Manchester.
Nobody is blaming anyone. It’s not the batsmen or the bowlers’ fault, we are all in this together and we will dig deep to get ourselves out of the position we are now in. We need to do every discipline right and put it all together for the last two matches at Headingley and The Oval. Most Test matches now have a good chance of a result so there is no reason why we still can’t turn this series around.
Full credit, though, must go to the way Steve Harmison and Monty Panesar bowled. That must be the best Harmison has bowled in a year or two so he will be confident for the next match, no doubt. Panesar also bowled with skill and he used the pitch well.
For me, I was top scorer in both innings but it doesn’t mean anything. People say it’s good that I spent time at the crease after missing Lord’s through injury but it doesn’t matter to me. If I score 200 or 300 or 12 it doesn’t make any difference to the way I feel as long as the result is right. That is what matters the most, ultimately.
I have sat in my hotel room in Manchester and not wanted to do much for a couple of days and cannot stop feeling hurt and angry but now in the lead up to the third Test I will start focusing on winning this game. The boys are very determined.
We did forget about the defeat today though when we went back to Old Trafford but just to have a game of football. We wanted to chill out by doing something different so it was seniors against juniors and it was a 3-3 draw.
I scored two and Inzy, who is a good finisher not only in cricket matches but also football as well, scored one. There are some useful players amongst the boys like Mohammad Sami, Umar Gul and Imran Farhat so it was a tough game, and one we all enjoyed. I hope I can say the same after Headingley.

Thanks Younis. You should be angry. You should all be angry. The 2nd Test was just about the worst display that any bunch of professional cricketers could even possibly dream about showing. Now is the time to move on. Do not dwell on it too much and concentrate on bouncing back at Headingly. This Pakistan side has a habit of bouncing back from near impossible situations and I believe we will do it again. Younis will be central to our chances.
