Yak in Boro's sights
Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric has confirms talks are ongoing with Middlesbrough over a possible deal for striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni.
Yakubu has won many fans with his dashing displays for Pompey in the last couple of seasons and he was the subject of an approach from Newcastle in the January transfer window.
Pompey were able to fend off interest from The Magpies in the powerful Nigerian, but Mandaric is aware it could be tough to prevent Yakubu from making a step up in the summer.
It would appear that Boro boss Steve McClaren is looking to get a jump on likely rival bidders Newcastle as he has already opened talks with Pompey.
"I cannot deny that there has been some dialogue [with McClaren]," said Mandaric.
"Nothing has been agreed because the transfer window is shut so legally we cannot buy or sell.
"Yakubu is a very talented player and it is only natural other clubs have started to show an interest."
Boro were major players last summer, bringing in big-name strikers Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Mark Viduka, and it could be that McClaren views Yakubu as the ideal third striking option at The Riverside.

Buffon not interested in Real
Juventus keeper Gianluigi Buffon has distanced himself from reports linking him with a summer move to Real Madrid.
Los Merengues have endured a torrid season by their own lofty standards and reports are suggesting president Florentino Perez is ready to sanction a number of summer signings.
Despite Spain keeper Iker Casillas being one of the few shining lights for Real this term, Spanish media reports have suggested Buffon is on the Bernabeu club's wish list.
Casillas has warned Real that he will not sign a new contract if the club bring in Buffon, but it would appear as if the Italian international has no intention of leaving Turin for Madrid.
"The truth is, and I repeat, I have a really long contract with Bianconeri, until 2008, and I feel really good in Italy," Buffon told Corriere dello Sport.
Buffon had words of comfort for his Real counterpart Casillas, as he added: "To Casillas we say that no-one called-me, no-one looked at me.
"And it seems to me that the least of Real's problems is goalkeeping."
Buffon, meanwhile, has urged Roma starlet Antonio Cassano to quit the capital and move to Turin. The keeper believes Cassano's bad-boy reputation has been blown out of proportion and feels he would be an ideal addition to the Juventus squad.
"In comparison to the European Championship I found him mostly thoughtful and well behaved," said Buffon.
"Ready for Juve? Yes, he's perfect."

Man Utd in talks with Real Madrid's Casillas
Manchester United have already held two rounds of talks with the agent of Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas
AS says United are monitoring Casillas' new contract talks, with the Spanish international's current deal having little over a year to run.
United representatives have spoken twice with Gines Carvajal about Casillas' situation, whose priority is to re-sign with Real.
However, Madrid have been dragging their feet over Casillas' new deal and the goalkeeper is already taking English lessons in preparation of a possible move to the Premiership.
Casillas will be disappointed with Real's new contract offer, which will fall well short of the parity he wants with the club's best paid players.
United are prepared to meet the Spaniard's demands, with a preliminary offer to Carvajal of £3.5 million-a-year for five seasons.

Tottenham must find £10M for Dortmund ace Rosicky
Tottenham will have to cough up £10 million if they want to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Tomas Rosicky
The Czech Republic international confirmed yesterday that Tottenham had been in talks with both his agent and BVB about an end-of-season deal.
Dortmund have serious financial problems and the summer sale of the 24-year-old Rosicky looks an increasingly likely prospect, with the German side looking for around £10m.
Rosicky, who was reportedly a target for Chelsea, Porto and Barcelona last summer, insists the lack of European football at Spurs would not affect his desire to move to the club.
"Given the current position of Dortmund in the Bundesliga there are no guarantees that I would be playing in Europe with Borussia either," he said. "Spurs are a traditional club and I 'm pleased to know they want me."

First team guarantee can win Spurs race for PSV's Van Bommel
Tottenham football chief Frank Arnesen hopes a guarantee of regular first team football will convince PSV Einhoven midfielder Mark van Bommel to join them in the summer.
The Holland international is off contract in June and reportedly has been in talks with Barcelona over the past week. However, negotiations have stalled as Van Bommel is seeking first team assurances from Barca coach Frank Rijkaard.
Spurs have been long time admirers of the player's talents and Arnesen knows him well from his time with PSV.

Reggina supremo Pasquale Foti has been locked in transfer talks this international week with AC Milan.
Foti has been speaking to Milan chiefs Adriano Galliani and Ariedo Braida about Reggina midfield pair Mozart and Giandomenico Mesto.
A cash-plus-player swap deal is on the table, with Reggina keeping on-loan Milan striker Marco Borriello, plus the choice of one of Sam ***** Bona or Massimo Donati, in exchange for Mesto and Mozart. A cash component of £2.5 million would also go to Reggina.
Foti is considering the offer, but doesn't want to make a decision until Reggina's fate for next season is decided.

Reds in Vieri link
Liverpool are believed to be pondering a shock move for Internazionale striker Christian Vieri.
Reports emanating from Italy suggest Liverpool are planning to meet Inter officials to discuss a possible transfer for Vieri.
The Italian international's future at Inter is shrouded in doubt after a disappointing season this term.
Vieri has struggled for form and he has been in and out of the team with Adriano and Obafemi Martins sometimes the preferred attacking pair of coach Roberto Mancini.
The 32-year-old' s former club Atletico Madrid are also thought to be keen on the striker's signature.
Vieri enjoyed a fine spell at Atletico during his one season in Spain before returning to Italy.
Liverpool and Atletico are both believed to be hoping to land Vieri on a cut-price deal as he only has one year to run on his current contract.
Both sides are set to keep tabs on Vieri's situation at Inter and they could make a move in the summer if they are given any encouragement from Inter.
However it remains to be seen whether or not Liverpool will be in the market for a striker having signed Fernando Morientes in January and club record signing Djibril Cisse poised to return to fitness next season.
Meanwhile, Liverpool midfielder Harry Kewell is being linked with a possible switch to Bayern Munich.
The German giants are on the lookout for a new left-sided winger with Ze Roberto set to depart in the summer.
Kewell's future at Anfield looks in doubt following a row with Rafa Benitez and The Reds could be willing to let him leave for the right

Middlesbrough, Spurs watch as Beckham drops another Premiership hint
Real Madrid midfielder David Beckham has dropped a further hint of his wish to return to the Premiership this summer
In his captain's column in yesterday's match programme, the England midfielder said: "If there's one thing I miss playing in Spain, it's the physical competitiveness of the Premiership.
"The tackles, the challenges, the will to go that extra yard are all very much part of the British game. It's what I've been brought up on and I can't wait to be in the thick of it this afternoon."
With Arsenal and Chelsea keener on Manchester City's Shaun Wright-Phillips, and a return to Manchester United out of the question, Beckham's options are limited, with Tottenham and Middlesbrough the most likely destinations.

Joaquin expects Betis to sell him
Real Betis winger Joaquin has admitted he expects to be sold in the summer
The Spanish international is being chased by Chelsea and Real Madrid and said: "Perhaps my future is not at Betis, but I am going to fight until the day I leave for this team.
"Betis have given me everything and if I had to leave tomorrow I would leave with my head held high.
"The truth is, if I do have to leave Betis I don't know where I'll go.
"I know the first thing I will think about is my happiness, where I would be happy. If that's Madrid, then good.
"If that's another team in Spain or abroad then equally so.
"I will look to make myself happy and also for the place where I will be able to grow as a footballer.
"If I leave Betis it will be to look for new experiences, different or something that I believe I won't be able to achieve at Betis.

"If I don't leave it's because I am very happy and that is the most important thing in my life."

Raul has urged Real Madrid colleague Michael Owen to make the move back to England if he is not totally committed to the Primera Liga giants.
The former Liverpool striker, who netted for England against Northern Ireland, has been primarily used as a substitute by the El Santiago Bernabeu outfit.

Depor to cash in on Cesar
Reports in Spain suggest that Deportivo have made up their mind to sell defender Cesar in the summer.
The Spain international has only one more season left on his contract at the Riazor, and Depor will look to cash in this summer given the widespread interest in the powerful stopper.
Newcastle, who tabled an offer for the 27-year-old during the January transfer window, and Everton are reported to be ready to move at the end of the campaign, while Sevilla will try and keep the player in Spain.
Depor have deemed the former Oviedo star surplus to requirements following the hugely-successful integration of Fabricio Coloccini to their team.
The Argentine has been in exceptional form since his transfer window move from Milan and has established himself, alongside Jorge Andrade, as first-choice in the heart of Depor's rearguard.
Depor president Augusto Cesar Lendoiro has confirmed that contact has been made with interested parties, but revealed no deal is, as yet, in place.
"There have only been initial contacts but there is no agreement with Cesar yet," he stated.
The player himself insists his future remains in the hands of Depor, and has not yet thought about a possible transfer.
"I am under contract with Deportivo and the decision corresponds to the club," Cesar stated. "After it has been made I will give my response

Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd has refused to be drawn on reports linking the club with a move for Manchester United's Alan Smith.
Reports suggested that The Magpies were interested in mounting an end of season bid for the former Leeds United man.
Newcastle were one of a number of clubs who made a bid last summer for Smith, who revealed that he shunned a move to Tyneside as well as Liverpool, Middlesbrough and Rangers.
All Shepherd would say is that they did indeed make a move for him last summer.
"We tried to sign Smith last season but he chose Manchester United instead of us," he said.
Shepherd was speaking as he flew to Portugal for a meeting with Sporting Lisbon.
Newcastle are talking with Sporting about arrangements for their forthcoming Uefa Cup quarter final tie, but also about the future of loanee Hugo Viana.
Viana is currently on a season-long loan at The Jose Alvalade and he has always stated his desire to remain in his homeland, after just two seasons in England.
"We are now talking to them about Hugo's future as really we want to know what they are going to do at the end of the season," said Shepherd

Bayern Munich's France international full back Willy Sagnol has emerged as a possible summer transfer target for Manchester United.
Sagnol is one of the most highly rated right backs in world football and he has only increased his stock during his five seasons with the Bavarian titans.
A move to Chelsea failed to materialise last summer, as even the moneybags Blues were put off by Bayern's rumoured €25 million asking price.
It is believed that, with Sagnol approaching the final year of his contract, Bayern will sanction a sale for a cut-price fee this summer.
It is not clear if Chelsea will renew their interest, but there are strong suggestions in Sagnol's native France that Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to enter the market.
Despite seeing United's profits drop and being told he will have to sell before buying, Ferguson is believed to view the 28-year-old as a missing piece of his jigsaw.
Ferguson may have a number of bargaining chips at his disposal, with the likes of Kleberson and David Bellion possibly surplus to requirements, and any sales could be used to finance a deal for Sagnol.
The wily Scot is unlikely to have a clear path to Sagnol, though, as Italian sides Milan, Juventus and Roma as well as Spanish aces Valencia are all believed to be keeping a watching brief.
Sagnol is keen to test himself in a new league and would surely fancy a crack at The Premiership, but the Italians could well have more muscle if it came down to a bidding war.

It seems like Kuffour will be going to Italy, also i dont think Souness is interested in him anymore, it seems like Kuffour has become a bit stale as a player! Mexes would be a good signing, him and Boumsong played together at Auxerre if my memory serves me right!
Mexes is supposed to have a discipline issue so that may put Souness off!
We definately need another striker, 2 if Shearer retires! the side is slowly taking shape, im still concerned that we are not winning any league games away from home!

Inter plan Vieira move
Arsenal, Sunday March 27 2005
Inter Milan are planning a move that will see Patrick Vieira return to the San Siro, according to reports in Italy.
The French international left the Serie A for Arsenal back in 1996 after a rather unsuccessful seven months with AC Milan.
He has since established himself as one of the best midfielders in world football, leading the Gunners to a spate of silverware during his nine seasons in north London.
Inter have now earmarked him as the man to get them back to the pinnacle of Italian football, although an estimated £16million asking price for the 29-year-old is out of their reach.
However, they are hoping an exchange deal involving Francesco Toldo, Edgar Davids and Emre Belozoglu could tempt Arsene Wenger to part with his talisman.
The Gunners are thought to be on the look-out for a new keeper given Manuel Almunia and Jens Lehmann's struggles this season, and the experienced Toldo could fit the bill perfectly.
Davids has been linked with Arsenal before and would prove an ideal replacement for Vieira.
Meanwhile, Thierry Henry has again stated his intention to see out the remainder of his playing career in north London.
The French striker is forever being linked with a host of top European clubs, but he insists he is very happy with life at Arsenal.
"If Arsenal want me, and we can come to an agreement when my contract runs out, I will be happy to remain until the end of my career," he said.
"Now I have an English family and I believe it shows I am happy in London. Here I feel really great.

Aston Villa have joined the hunt for French full back Gregory Vignal, who is on loan at Rangers from Liverpool.
Vignal has enjoyed an impressive season in Scotland and The Gers are keen to sign the left back on a permanent basis.
But talks between the two parties have broken down and Vignal is currently assessing his options for when his Liverpool contract expires in the summer.
Newcastle United and Marseille are interested in the 23-year-old, while Villa have now entered the race for his signature.
The player's agent Philippe Flavier is aware of interest from The Premiership and hinted that Marseille have little hope of capturing Vignal.
"He will probably not return to France," said Flavier. "Gregory wants to stay in Scotland or England.
"We have heard that Newcastle and Aston Villa are interested and other clubs too, but I have not met with any English club."
Despite talks reaching an impasse with Rangers, Flavier did not discount the possibility of an accord being struck with the Scottish giants.
He added: "Nothing has changed but everything is still open for Glasgow too.

Martin Jol claims Tottenham have not been in negotiations to sign Tomas Rosicky, while admitting he fears he will be unable to land Mark van Bommel.
Borussia Dortmund playmaker Rosicky has been linked with a summer switch to White Hart Lane to ease the German club's financial problems.
The Czech Republic international had stated that talks had taken place regarding a potential move to Spurs at the end of the season.
But Jol insists there have been no discussions regarding Rosicky and that he is not looking to sign the schemer.
"I am happy with all the players I have now," said Jol.
"I saw we were linked with four or five players in the papers but I didn't know them. Maybe they are trying to use English club.
"It is not true we are interested in Rosicky. We have not been in negotiations."
PSV Eindhoven captain van Bommel is a target for Jol and he had hoped to bring his fellow Dutchman to North London in the summer.
Van Bommel will be available on a free transfer and speculation widely predicts that the midfielder will join Barcelona.
Though van Bommel insists he has yet to decide upon his future, Jol is confident that his compatriot will end up at Camp Nou.
He added: "Van Bommel, from what I know, is going to Barcelona.

Arsenal are believed to be stepping up their interest in Espanyol's highly-rated keeper Carlos Kameni.
The Cameroon international has been regularly reviewed by Manchester United but Arsene Wenger has reportedly muscled his way to the front of the queue in the race to sign the oustanding goalie.
Catalan media reports claim Wenger spoke with Kameni during the recent Camp Nou charity match in aid of the victims of the Tsunami.
United sent goalkeeping coach Tony Coton to see the Espanyol number one but Arsenal are emerging as the favourites to sign him, if his club agree to any move.
"The idea of the club is that Carlos remains on our staff," coach Miguel Angel Lotina told Sport.
"He is a player who is growing and his value is increasing which means that if an offer came, then we could not reject it automatically and for that reason the sports director is looking at players each day.
"In England there are various teams that have problems with their goalkeepers and so it would not be strange if an offer is made for him.
"The game against Barcelona was seen across Europe and Kameni's actions were sensational.
"But we hae not received any offers for Kameni."
The African shot-stopper has a buy-out clause of €6 million which the club have been trying to renegotiate.
"The only thing I can say is that the player will improve more and, in some years, his value in the football market will be over €6 million," added Lotina.
Kameni was previously a target for Wolves when at Le Havre but

Brazilian star Emerson looks set to join Real Madrid in the summer after telling Juventus chiefs that he wants to quit the Turin club and move to Spain.
The former Roma midfielder was due to link up with the Bernabeu outfit last summer for €18 million, but he opted to join Juventus after giving his word to Bianconeri boss Fabio Capello.
Negotiations are now ready to commence with Los Merengues, as Emerson seems to have his heart set on a move to Spain to join compatriots Roberto Carlos and Ronaldo.
According to reports in the Spanish media, Real supremo Florentino Perez was asked by his counterpart Luciano Moggi which Juve player he wanted to buy because 'they are all for sale', before the two sides met in the UEFA Champions League in March.
Although Perez did not give a name, both sporting director Arrigo Sacchi and manager Wanderley Luxemburgo have identified Emerson as a potential candidate to further reinforce the midfield following the signing of Thomas Gravesen.
Talks may have to include a swap deal as Juventus are likely to want a Madrid player, with a defender being their priority as their first-choice back four are now all over 30 years of age.

Barcelona are scouting Robinho, even though the Santos starlet seems bound for Real Madrid.
The two leading teams in La Liga are both admirers of the Brazilian wonder-kid, who came on as a substitute in his country's 1-0 win over Peru in a World Cup qualifier at the weekend.
Barca will send a representative to oversee Brazil's next fixture, with Uruguay in Montevideo, with Sandro Rosell tipped to make the long trip to South America.
"I am happy to know that a very important team like Barcelona are interested in me but, to be honest, I can't think about that too much at the moment because I am concentrating on the match that Brazil have to play against Uruguay," commented Robinho.
The young forward also spoke about his future move to Europe in an interview with Spanish publication Don Balon.
"Barcelona are a very well liked club in Brazil due to the success of our players like Romario, Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho," he stated.
"I think that Spain is the ideal country for me but only God knows which club I will play for.
"Real Madrid are a great club and any football player would want to play there but I also have my ambitions with Santos.
"Only God knows what will happen and I hope to continue doing well here.
"I am leaving everything in the hands of my father and my agent and they will sort out what happens.
"If I had to leave Santos, then it will be important that I join a club that regularly wins trophies. There would be no point in joining a team if they were only going to pay me a lot of money, but were unable to let me play at the highest level or with the national team.
"I am still young and have my whole career ahead of me. That is why, if I had to leave, it would be to join a really good team.
"[Real coach] Wanderley [Luxemburgo] is a coach that I know well and who likes the way I play.
"It would be very good to work with him again.
"Luxemburgo is a very, very good trainer. He finds it very easy to lift players.
"It is difficult to feel negative with him because he is so good at the psychological side of things."
Robinho is also believed to be a long-term target for big-spending Chelsea.

Valencia are reported to be preparing a summer move for Liverpool striker Milan Baros.
The Primera outfit are already planning a close-season recruitment drive after a disappointing season, and will rekindle their interest in a player they attempted to land last summer.
At that point Liverpool were unwilling to do business after the Czech had ended top scorer at Euro 2004, and it became apparent Michael Owen was set to leave Anfield for Real Madrid.
However, despite a decent campaign in which he has bagged 13 goals, Reds boss Rafa Benitez is ready to listen to substantial offers for Baros who does not fit in his plans for the long-term redevelopment of the club.
Baros has never made any secret of his desire to play in the Spanish league, and even expressed his disappointment last summer that a move to Barcelona had fallen through.
"I only felt bad about the failed bid from Barcelona," he stated last October.
"I have loved them since I was a child. And now, they play fantastically. Maybe it can happen in the future.
"What wasn't in the summer, can be in the future. I will only be 23-years-old (next summer)."
It is believed it will take a bid of around £10 million to prise Baros from Liverpool, but Valencia are looking to reshape their squad after a season of disappointment.
Claudio Ranieri's return to the Primera club did not work out as hoped, and Valencia are ready to offload some of the expensive Italian imports he signed last summer, like Bernardo Corradi and Stefano Fiore, to fund a move for Baros.
The Che already have deals in place to sign Edu from Arsenal and Santiago Ezquerro from Athletic Bilbao on free transfers, and are willing to make a big effort to land the former Banik Ostrava star.
Baros is a player who is hugely admired by current Valencia coach Antonio Lopez - who was working at Valencia under Benitez last summer when the Spaniards were showing an interest in the player.
Baros' agent Pavel Paska insisted he had received no formal approach from Valencia, but revealed that a number of clubs were following his client.
"I know nothing of interest from Valencia," he stated.
"There are many teams that have asked for Baros, but I can assure you 100 percent that of Valencia I know nothing.
"I am not saying that they are or are not interested, but they have not transmitted it to me."
However, a possible stumbling block to any deal between Valencia and Liverpool is the fact that Benitez is still locked in a bitter legal dispute with his former club over his decision to leave for Liverpool

Valencia claim Arsenal midfielder Edu will sign for them at the end of the season.
The Brazilian's future has been the subject of intense speculation for some time after he rejected offers of a new deal at Highbury.
Edu is out of contract in the summer and has given little indication that he is willing to prolong his stay at Arsenal.
Valencia have always claimed they have been frontrunners for his signature and although a move to La Mestalla in the January transfer window failed to materialise when the two clubs failed to agree a fee, they are confident he will be plying his trade for them next season.
A number of other clubs have been linked with the gifted midfielder, but Valencia sporting director Eduardo Macia insists Edu is set to pledge his future to the club in the next couple of weeks.
Arsenal's Brazilian midfielder Edu will sign for Valencia in the summer after failing to agree a new contract at Highbury.

Newcastle United boss Graeme Souness regards skipper Alan Shearer as his eventual successor at St James' Park.
Speaking at yesterday's media conference to confirm Toon hero Shearer is playing on next season, Souness said: "My attitude to it is that one day I would love to hand over the reins to Alan Shearer.
"I want a few years here, to be successful, and then hand over a healthy club. This is his club - I have no problem with that.
"He chose to come back to the North East when he could have gone anywhere in the world. That tells you what he thinks about it."
Souey, who signed a three-year deal when he took over from Bobby Robson in September, added: "I would love to make this club successful and then say 'Here you are'.
"At present he can be involved in the coaching side as much as he wants. He's going to learn from everyone, working with me and the other people here, every day. He has worked with top managers and would take little bits from each one.
"Alan is destined to go into management at some time and, if I were a gambling man, I would say he would be successful at it."
Shearer was a lot more reticent. He said: "A day is a long time in football and I don't know what is going to happen.
"An ideal scenario is for this club to be successful with Graeme as boss."

Barcelona vice-president Sandro Rossell travelled to South America to watch Brazil's World Cup qualifier with Uruguay as the Catalans mount a bid to beat Real Madrid to the signature of Robinho.
The Catalan club believe that Rossell is the man to secure a deal after his years spent as the supremo of sportswear giants Nike in South America.
As president Joan Laporta's right-hand man, Rossell played a crucial role in securing the signature of Ronaldinho from Paris Saint Germain.
After the match in Montevideo, which ended in a 1-1 draw, Rossell spoke to many of the Brazilian squad who he knows on personal terms, and this is the key to Barca's bid to clinch a deal for Robinho.
The Santos wonderkid was quoted as saying: "I am very happy that a club like Barcelona is interested in me.
"But I have to concentrate on Santos. We are doing well in the Copa Libertadores and I do not want anyone saying that I am putting my future ahead of the team."
Rossell admitted late last year that the Blaugrana are keen to unite Robinho with Ronaldinho and believe that the youngster would learn from his fellow countryman.

Skysports.com can reveal that Manchester United are considering a move for Uruguayan star Mario Regueiro.
Sir Alex Ferguson dispatched his brother Martin - United's chief scout - to watch Racing Santander versus Espanyol on Sunday.
Espanyol goalkeeper Carlos Kameni came under Ferguson's gaze, but he was not the primary target as United goalkeeping coach Tony Coton has already compiled a comprehensive dossier on the Cameroonian.
The main reason for Ferguson's visit was indeed Racing's South American speedster Regueiro.
The 26-year-old winger, who operates down the left, has bagged eight goals this season and has already attracted interest from leading Spanish clubs including Sevilla.
United have already admitted that they have limited transfer funds heading into the summer and the fact Regueiro is out of contract at the end of the season is sure to be an appealing feature.
Regueiro is not understood to have had a great game in front of Ferguson as he was withdrawn just after the hour, but how much of a bearing that has on whether United make a bid remains to be seen.
It is understood that United have already made contact with Regueiro's agent Paco Casal about a possible move to Old Trafford - although he refused to confirm meetings had taken place.
The player insists he is only thinking about Racing and not United.
"All my future depends on my work in the next few weeks," Regueiro told skysports.com.
"My desire is to get success with Racing and not speak with United."
