Arshad Khan, Shahid Nazir among candidates for India tour

By our correspondent

KARACHI: Off-spinner Arshad Khan and paceman Shahid Nazir have become important contenders to be recalled for the Indian tour after the persistent fitness problems faced by Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Sami, Shabbir Ahmed and Umar Gul.

A Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official said on Wednesday that Arshad and Shahid stood very good chances of making the touring squad, as the selectors were keen to strengthen the bowling attack for the crucial tour. "Shabbir only has a 50-50 chance to recover in time for the tour from his knee injury and Umar Gul has been ruled out because of a stress fracture in his back. While Shoaib and Sami have also struggled with their fitness recently," he pointed out.

He also made the point that Pakistan was keen to take two specialist spinners to India as they were expecting slow and turning tracks for the Tests there. "At present we need someone to partner Danish Kaneria and the selectors feel Arshad, even at the age of 33, is the best choice because he is experienced and has consistently performed well at the domestic level," the official explained.

Off-spinner Arshad, who has a record of 30 wickets in eight Tests and 44 in 48 One-day Internationals, last played for Pakistan in November 2000 against England.

While swing bowler Shahid Nazir —still only 27 years —made his last appearance for Pakistan in the 1999-2000 season against Sri Lanka after playing eight Tests and 17 one-dayers.

Both have performed impressively for their teams in the ongoing domestic season with Shahid in particular topping the bowling averages with 52 wickets at an average of only 12.75 in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy —followed by 11 wickets at 11.45 in the ABM Amro one-day tournament. Arshad, the off-break bowler from Peshawar, ended with 39 wickets in the Quaid Trophy at an average of 20.39.

The official said that when the team returned from Australia the selectors would sit down with the team management to reconsider the selections for the Indian tour. "But there is a feeling we need to add depth and experience to the bowling even if Shoaib and Sami are available," he stated.

He said Shabbir Ahmed’s recovery process had been put back because he started to bowl early in the nets and is now undergoing hydrotherapy treatment. "But he only has a 50-50 chance of making the tour as he is still struggling with his fitness and form," the official said.

He added that Hyderabad’s opening batter Faisal Athar, who scored four hundreds in the Quaid Trophy while accumulating 942 runs at an average of 70 and another 281 runs in the one-day tournament, was another one certain to make the Indian tour. Faisal has played just a single one-dayer for Pakistan in 2003 in Sri Lanka.

I'd like Shabbir Ahmed to be in the side.

Wouldn't we all?

Good news. Don't even remember seeing any matches with Shahid bowling but I always liked Arshad's bowling. Good foil for Kaneria, especially as our fast bowling reserves look poor.

Arshad was an OK bowler last time I saw him which was a long time ago.

I hope the selectors don't simply discard khalil and Rao, they have bowled their hearts out in the VB series....and they do have immence potential

Sage

Sometimes, heart is not enough. Khalil and Rao may be able to cut it at ODI level, but they'll get creamed at the Test level. Even Rana I don't feel is ready for Tests, but he's the best contender right now. This is why it may make sense to go in with two spinners and two pacers. If Shabbir isn't available, Shahid should get the nod for the first Test, paired up with either Sami or Rana. It'll be a brand new attack, but we don't have much else to work with.

Sage is right. Khalil may have a bit of potential provided his action is sorted out but Rao is a genuine medium pacer who does not have much potential as a test bowler.

How about Shoaib, Shahid Nazir, Rana and Kaneria?

I hope Arshad is not picked. Eddie Hemmings spins it more than him.

To be fair to Rao, he has been clocked at 140Kph - in my little book, that is pace and worth a second look. With Rao, you get the full package - commitment, hardwork and a never say die attitude and add speed and some skills - I have said it before and will repeat like a broken record - he is Pakistans answer to Hoggard ...

oooo he spins alright .... its just that Arshad has not variation at all and even pace ... even by spinning standards ...

he is someone who you would see being classfied as Slow Right Arm Off spinner

MIG, do you not mean Rana?

Yes he must have meant Rana.

Apologis for confusing the hell out of everyone - I Did mean Rana! :(

Rao is just about getting there - in the upcoming games, he can make an impact and remains to be seen.

i believe Shoaib will be fit for the India's tour but i am disappointed & angry with Shabbir as he started to bowl early than he should which causes more trouble. we needed him in India's tour very badly as our pace bowling attack is going down the hills.

Nazir, after so many good seasons, atlast is a contender of being selected. good to hear this. not sure about Arshad as someone here said that he don't have variations & Indians are extreamely good player of spin bowling. although we need another spinner but i think selectors should feel extreamely +ve before picking a spinner from our domestic.

well i think the fact that nazir has been grinded so long before finally coming into contention again after so many years, must've made him a good player by now..

thats how the aussies get good players...they get lots of experience in domestic cricket..take kasper as an example

I can't believe Shabbir's knee is still bothering him
I remember he said rehab was going great and that was in a November interview.

Inshallah, he'll get better, because ive lost faith in domestic bowlers. Mind you i haven't seen either Nazir or Khan bowl

Shahid Nazir is just as good IF not better than Shabbir, Gul and Co.

I saw an interview on Bob woolmer on ICC cricket world and he said that Future off pakistans bowling is difficult to plan for as both Shabbir/gul ARE STRUGGLING DUE TO INJURIES!

I like your Test XV, Amjid

If Shabbir is not fit, Rana should get the spot.

Amjid Javed
3rd February 2005, 14:30
i dunno about rana as a test bowler, am reluctant to put sami in 1st x1.

i just hope final x1 is well balanced. pakistan aint gona blast india out on dust bowls. so pakistan need bowlers with abit or raw pace guile or ability to tie batsmen down.

id take irshad along as a wild card option.

Sage

Rana would be there as a backup.
Nazir and Shabbir are our first choice seamers.

It would be nice if we could unleash Irshaad against the Indians and take 'em by surprise. But after that initial shock, I don't know if he can keep it under control, especially if he starts getting hammered around.

Honestly, our bowling attack looks very sad.

Amjid Javed

Sage, Aussies used a very smart game plan v india.

warne who had previously been used as an attack bowler was used as a stock bowler. All the Aussies seamers then bowled to a very well made plan.

1st inns Aussies always started with a boundary rider and looked to bowl line and length, on basis indian batsmen would play good shot and just get 1 rather than 4. therefore batsmen would get fustrated and also aussies knew indians general running between wkts was poor so they looked 2 expose that!

2nd inns, With wicket getting slower and lower they bowled straighter looking for bowled and lbws.

Aussies also mainly bowled off stick and outside away from traditional string areas middle and leg!

Sage
3rd February 2005, 14:42
But are our bowlers capable of bowling to a game plan like the Aussies? Unfortunately, not many thinking bowlers in our cupboard. If Sami and Akhtar play, might as well forget about having any game plan.

Waseem

good squad there DON but according to few articles in recent days Faisal Athar is certain to make the squad. Yasir Hameed will be dropped i think.

My squad:

Butt
Taufeeq
Younis K
Inzamam
Youhanna
Kamal
Akmal
Arshad K(OR Rana if pitch is not spinners heaven)
Shoaib (or Sami if Shoaib is unfit)
Shahid Nazir (or Shabbir if FIT)
Danish Kaneria

I reckon Sami will be almost useless on Indian pitches.

100 % FIT Akhtar is still our best bowler simply because he knows where to pitch the bowl now after years of obsesion with PACE.

hameed dropped? he got 2 50s in his last test!

Our game plan should be to restrict boundaries and huge run rate, early on. If they have a low score they'll get frustrated and get themselves out.

When facing Pak, the Indian public and the Indian batsmen don't want to win ugly. They have to win pretty, meaning it has to be triumphant, glorious, personal milestones have to be reached, lots boundaries and DVD calibre action. In other words "jeet lo dil" If things don't start out like that the batsmen will get out of sorts and gift us wickets.

Sage is right, Shoaib can't bowl to this plan, because 'prettyboys' can't win ugly , they want to blast stumps off.

If we have Rana and Shabbir bowling tight and accurate we're better off. The more grinding out involved or 'ugliness' the more i fancy Pakistan
