The Pakistan team’s next major tour comes in the form of the Champions Trophy (Oct-Nov) in India. Although on paper Pakistan are amongst the favourites, we haven’t had a very convincing calendar year preceding the CT.

We’ve come off worse in our 7 encounters with India (5-2), we’re about even with England (5-4) and the only team we’ve dominated is Sri Lanka (2-0) in Sri Lanka. Out of the 21 ODI’s we’ve played in the last 12 months; we’ve won 10 and lost 9 with 2 lost to No Results. That doesn’t look very promising going into the Champions Trophy or with the World Cup half a year away!

So who has performed and who has flopped for us during these games? Below are the stats (minimum of 10 games/inns)...

Bowling – These are the only 5 bowlers who have played 10 or more games in the qualifying period and out of them Afridi has the best all-round figures. Afridi boasts an excellent economy rate, a good average, an impressive strike rate and a good wickets per match ratio. Asif and Rana were our other two standout bowlers over the last calendar year. Malik has struggled with injury and Razzaq has struggled to either contain or to take wickets!

17 Ms – 19 wkts @ 28.42 avg – 38.3 SR – 4.4 Eco – 1.1 WPM - Afridi
17 Ms – 19 wkts @ 29.57 avg – 45.0 SR – 3.9 Eco – 1.1 WPM - Asif
19 Ms – 26 wkts @ 31.88 avg – 32.7 SR – 5.8 Eco – 1.4 WPM - Rana
20 Ms – 12 wkts @ 32.50 avg – 40.5 SR – 4.8 Eco – 0.6 WPM - Malik
21 Ms – 15 wkts @ 44.33 avg – 51.1 SR – 5.2 Eco – 0.7 WPM - Razzaq

Batting – We only have four batsmen averaging over 35 and no-one averaging much over 40. Malik, Afridi and Akmal’s dip in form with the bat has cost us the extra runs that mean the difference between victory and defeat! However Younis Khan’s rich form at a healthy strike rate bodes well for future assignments!

20 inns - 694 runs @ 40.82 avg - 65.2 SR - 83* HS - 7x 50 - 0x 100 ---> Yousuf
21 inns - 665 runs @ 39.11 avg - 75.9 SR - 101 HS - 5x 50 - 1x 100 ---> Younis
19 inns - 578 runs @ 38.53 avg - 81.8 SR - 81* HS - 2x 50 - 0x 100 ---> Inzamam
17 inns - 417 runs @ 37.90 avg - 90.7 SR - 75* HS - 3x 50 - 0x 100 ---> Razzaq
19 inns - 561 runs @ 31.16 avg - 79.6 SR - 108 HS - 3x 50 - 1x 100 ---> Malik
18 inns - 436 runs @ 29.06 avg - 79.6 SR - 109 HS - 0x 50 - 2x 100 ---> Kamran
12 inns - 305 runs @ 25.41 avg - 68.4 SR - 101 HS - 1x 50 - 1x 100 ---> Butt
14 inns - 164 runs @ 11.71 avg - 98.0 SR --- 34 HS - 0x50 - 0x100 ---> Afridi

...Pakistan have lost two high profile ODI series this year against India (4-1) and England (2-2 is a loss). Hopefully this will give the team the kick up the backside that they need!

"and England (2-2 is a loss)"

It may be a disappointment but it is not a loss.

To the 8th ranked team in the World believe me it is!

Some interesting stats there - thanks for taking the trouble to work them out.

I imagine the test stats for this period would also be interesting. For a change we played a reasonable number of tests - 12 in all. I suspect they will show that other than Inzy, Moyo and YK none of the other batsmen averaged over 40 and when available only Asif and Shoaib performed with the ball.
