Two legendary singers with perhaps an equal number of admirers yet i often wonder that who ranks higher!.The passion of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's songs versus the golden voice of Mohammed Rafi.I reckon NFAK just shades it but want to hear what others think.Who of the two do you rate higher?

Nakhuda:

Honestly, you have magnificent taste if these two are your two top singers. They are indeed m y two favourite singers and I find it extremely difficult to distinguish who is better. I have about 2000 - 2500 Mohammad Rafi tracks, compared with about 450 - 550 NFAK tracks. However, Nusrat was a Qawwal, whilst Rafi saab was jack of all trades, ghazals, nazms, naats, hamds, you name it he could sing it. It does depend on your thinking but I suppose Mohammad Rafi just edges it for me.

Hard to pick between these to greats...but I like NAFK slightly better than Rafi cos of his very unique voice...Kishore Kumar happens to be my favourite though!

Mohd Rafi for me - No singer can come close to matching that voice...& the fact that his grandson is a friend of mine.

NFK was in a class of his own but a diffrent class to Rafi's.

Rafi is "Elvis Presley" of Sub-Continent.No one can beat him when it comes to vocal. But Nustral Fatheh Ali Khan is arguably one of the best musician from Sub-Continent.

Kishore,Mukhesh,K.l Sehgal were also legends but not as good as Rafi.

i'm not sure if he composed music?

my view is he was a singer of qawaali par exellence, a gift from the creator that illuminated our lives

don't know if you have heard this - the long road - from dead man walking soundtrack - a collaboration of nfak and eddie vedder - i find it to be a simply awesome:

He was a COMPOSER,the famous indian Musician ANU MALIK stole numerous compositions of Nusrat. Nusrat in his interview mentioned about this piration By Anu Malik.

He composed the music for films like,

Kartoos

...Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya
Bandit Queen
E.t.c///

He also did some composition for films like

The Last Temptation of Christ
Dead Man Waliking ,as you mentioned above.
Mansoon Wedding
Bend It like Becham (Kehna sohna,Terai Bin nayi lagda)
Natural born killers..

e.t.c

He was a briliant singer and Composer.A complete musician.

Both of them had their own styles and belonged to different eras. The more appropriate question would be...

Who is better - Kishore Kumar or Mohammad Rafi?

I'd say Mohammad Rafi..no doubt. Kishore was a good singer, but was over-hyped.

You can't compare the two. I mean you can compare Rafi and Kishore but not two people from completely different domains of music.
Nusrat was a composer who gave a new lease to semi-classical music of the subcontinent (which had been all but swept away by the wave of pop and film music). Rafi, on the other hand was a playback singer par excellence.
Rafi had a superior voice, and because he sang for different music directors, you will find more versatility and range in his songs. But then he was only a singer. Nusrat was a creator of music and trends and for the most part sang his own compositions. Both though were uniquely gifted and through and through professionals.

My favorite hindi/urdu male singers are as follows:

1. Rafi

2. Kishore Kumar

3. Atif Aslam

4. Mukesh

5. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan

I dont like Nusrat that much, and think Atif Aslam is betta than him becoz he is more modern, contemporary and has a melodious voice at high pitch so that young people can admire him betta.

Of course Rafi is the best singer to come out of hindi film industry coz his voice is so silky and beautiful and Kishore is close second has a deeper voice and great range.
