Should waqar younis have continued to play?

Waqar younis was dropped like many other seniors after the world cup disaster in 2003. waqar may not have been the explosive bowler of yester-year but his experience would have been invaluble in current side. Having watched darren gough in S.africa still be able to do it in ODI series, makes me think pakistan could have kept waqar inside as a 3rd/4th seamer in odi the side. Alot of are current bowlers seem to lack guidance... which waqar as a player cud have given to them!

I agree taha 100%. Anwar was my all time fav pakistan player and the odi century v india proved he was still up to playing at ODI level atleast!

He cud have played on for a year or 2 years and help groom are top order!

no waqar should not have carried on. The world cup debacle was a blessing in disguise....we needed to get rid of all the dead wood and that was perfect excuse to do it. Don't get me wrong....they had all been wonderful wonderful players for Pakistan in the past, but Pakistan cricket needed a change and they needed to go in the best interests of Pakistan cricket.........otherwise it would have just been more and more of the same. We needed to work on some youngsters and start to nurture some people without delay.

Saeed Anwar was also past it by then....even his century against India wasn't the classic Saeed Anwar innings, it was quite itchy and scratchy and he ran Inzi out.

don- not bad mouthnig saeed anwar. Just describing his innings against India in the world cup. Go watch a video of that match....it was not the classic Saeed Anwar innings where he looks so elegant you could faint.

If he hadn't got out when he did we wouldn't have got to 272 either.

Completely agree with Hash.

Waqar was a shell, lost his potency a long time ago and didn't have Akram's guiles to continue playing. Even Akram seemed at sea in his last few tests. In ODIs, Waqar was getting hammered on a regular basis without taking wickets. When this happens to your captain, it always has a detrimental effect on the team. If only either Wasim or Waqar retired early, a youngster could've taken the third seamer's spot and learned from the remaining bowler. Sami had a few chances but didn't seem to learn anything except how to bowl fast.

Saeed was also a shell...didn't seem very into the game after his return. He was struggling for form, and even his ODI 100 against India was not very encouraging. Still we didn't have a better alternative for the WC.

Sadly, our seniors play past their expiration and after they all leave, the team is left with novices. And anyone between 28-33 is not given a look in because they are too old. Do we know something Australia doesn't?

waqar was below par no doubt, but then so were the rest of our bowlers....& if anyone gave us a chance in that match against India it was Waqar
with his dismissals of sehwag & ganguly. Anyway it became clear in the india series last year why they should've have stuck with him. If he was a shell of himself why was he the 2nd highest ODI wicket taker in 2002?

Those who went to school & understand English will know what i meant.
ie in the year 2002 he took 52 wickets. Second only to Pollock who took 54 but waqar had a much better strike rate & in less matches.
Since then no bowler has even taken 50 wickets in a calendar year.....

Waqar didnt want to be a Kapil and be remembered for the latter years of his career where he was a shadow of his best. I hope people remember him for being the most attacking, the greatest wicket taking fast bowler the game has ever witnessed.

amit- except waqar didn't actually retire until less than a year ago!
It was during the Pakistan vs India test series that he finally decided to call ti a day. He should have gone after the world cup of his own accord.

i think waqar and saeed should have been given a year to groom and pass on the tricks of the trade to the newcomers.

it was amistake on the boards part to chuck al lthe eniors away.

As Hash said, Waqar was well past it. We have a habit of forgetting all the bad points. Check his test record over his last 5 years and it won't be much better than the current inexperienced lot.

Saeed also was on his last legs and his fitness wasn't going to let him last long.

Of course Waqar was past it. But dropping him and Wasim at the same time was yet another display of stupidity by the PCB.

They went under the banner of "rebuilding" and pretty much started from scratch. Waqar and Wasim led the attack for so many years. Leading an attack is not only about opening the bowling or getting the most wickets. It is about leading the strategy, coaching the newer bowlers, encouraging the junior bowlers etc etc.

After the two W's retired, there was no-one to lead the attack. Shoaib is a match-winner in his own right, but he cannot LEAD the attack and bring along the youngsters.

Waqar should have stayed - if only to groom the likes of Sami, Shabbir, Rana etc....
