Newcastle striker Alan Shearer has postponed his retirement and will play on for another season, say reports.
Shearer, 34, has insisted several times that he would quit in May, but he has reportedly negotiated a contract extension to stay on at St James' Park.

The former England captain is just nine goals short of Jackie Milburn's club-record total of 200 goals.

BBC Radio Five Live understands Shearer will confirm the decision at a new conference on Friday morning.

BBC Radio Five Live understands Shearer will confirm the decision at a news conference at 0900 BST on Friday.

Newcastle manager Graeme Souness has made a point of trying to get Shearer to change his mind since replacing Sir Bobby Robson as the club's manager in September.

His need became more pressing following the public row with Craig Bellamy, which saw the Wales forward move to Celtic on loan in January, and the increasing doubts about the value of Patrick Kluivert to the team.

I think I would have to put forth a suggestion on the Weekly Mods Round-Table Conference to disallow any discussion on the topic of football and the scums associated with it in any way whatsoever. :|

Ok I know I will be thrown out. /:)

back to footbal gents!!!!

GA...bad move by Alan Shearer. Mentallly he had retired. I am not sure another season will do him justice. He has always made the right decision at the right time...leaving Southampton, then Blackburn, England and now Newcastle.

I like the idea of JM's record being immortal.

BUT had he retired mentally????

I think he had decided a while back that he would continue, Shearer would imo have asked himself that what can he offer us next season, whether we will be better off without him AND imo we still need him, especially since we have no other genuine striker imo . . . .

Kluivert= Is always getting injured
Ameobi= Not good enough. a decent squad player but thats it
Bellamy= well we know he's not welcome anymore

AND thats it, so it would be hard for us to sign 2 strikers and expect them to do well straightaway. Shearer should help the new players settle in.

I agree Shearer's the best youve got-football's in his blood to make a decision like he did isnt that simple n easy.....

imo you wont and cant replace him!!- which players are Newcastle in touch with!

i think maybe Saha will go to Newcastle!

Dont want Saha - he is a decent player BUT is always injured now!

I wouldnt mind us signing Yakubu and also we could try going for Owen

Assara K
1st April 2005, 05:01
nah i think Owen's had enough he just wants to win a trophy.....which Real and Liverpool have failed to do!-but then again there's no harm in trying

you never know..... if Smith doesnt get more or less a permanent spot in the 1st team he may consider a move to Newcastle!

shearer shud have retired this season... i hate players/managers who go back on decisions.. it neva seems to benefit any1...!

if shearer is still playin well and if he thinks he can still do it fot another year, let him. Hes not stupid he wouldnt have stayed on if he didnt think he could have done it for another year.

Assara K
1st April 2005, 08:14
yeah but it really annoys me when people go back on their word-like when Fergie said he was gonna leave Man U and then the some players decided to do a petition so he'd stay and the damn plan worked!

nufc
1st April 2005, 08:21
yeh thats a good thing aint it, would have been sad to see fergie leave a few years back.

Assara K
1st April 2005, 08:26
i think shearer's playin well and i agree if he wants to stay for longer then let him-i really really want him to leave on a high note- and the least Newcastle can do is win a trophy for him!

i hate fergie now! he's partly to blame for Man U's losses-when he plays the WRONG formation and when he buys the wrong players.....the thing about fergie is he always plans for tomoro as he's fond on the "youngsters"

nufc
1st April 2005, 08:50
lol which wrong players has he bought saha?

if newcastle can get in owen up there and get a good centreback, they will be challenging for top 3 spot IMO

Assara K
1st April 2005, 09:38
saha, djemba-djemba, miller etc

Waqar's inswinging yorker

saha has talent, same with djemba but now there stock isnt that high

nufc
1st April 2005, 10:38
djemba-djemba is a good player, miller is one for the future and saha is good but not good enough for united. I doubt we can get owen but a decent centre back and a decent striker and well be up in the four.

lpool and newcastle both looking good

lpool -

kirkland will be fit for them next season, they already have carragher at centre half and riise at left back who are top 3 quality, then alonso and gerrard in middle of park is quality with luis garcia t right winger and morientes/cisse up front.

Now all lpool need i feel is a left winger/ attacking midfielder and a centre back. Right back can be masked by finnan/josemi.

To get the players they need they badly need to finish fourth in prem - get £10mill upfront. Also baros wants to leave - and valencia want him - they should trade him for either vicente or aimar. Then that leaves £10m for a top quality centreback - could be cheeky and try and get vincent kompany who is coveted by barca/real m/chelsea - they need a centre half with pace and then they are up there. If aimar cant be picked off then go for juan roman riquelme

Newcastle just need a good striker - i would suggest javier saviola - wouldnt cost a lot and then a centre half to partner boumsong - for me it would be christian chivu - roma are in turmoil and this guy is top notch

nufc
1st April 2005, 11:00
yeh some good ideas but i dont think saviola is made out for the premiership, i think its too physical for him. I hope we dont get yakubu and johnson i dont rate them very much.

Bellamy was good but theres no chance for him coming back now. Hopefully Kluivert can play to his full potential and we would have a top quailty striker although he has shown glipses of his best he is not consistent. People have been syaing he has not been fully fit but these next few months are make or break for him, he is going to have to play well to get a new contract!

We were going to go for kuffor but i think he is now going to italy or arsenal he would have been a great signing but that is out of the question now. Ive heard alot of promsing things about Chivu but i have never seen him play so i cant comment on him. Also if bramble continues his current form we wont need another centre half!

1st April 2005, 11:04
chivu is top notch, left footed, can play at left back too - has pace - many have compared him to a young paulo maldini!!!!!

saviola is class, shame some stupid officials at barca cant see that - they prefer giuly - believe me - who ever gets him would get a GEM, he is a great little player, nonesense to say it is too physical for him, he can adapt
