Younis Khan, the Pakistan vice-captain, believes that the possible comeback of three key fast bowlers including Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif would make Pakistan the best bowling team in the world, even ahead of world champions Australia.

Younis said that his team would gain a huge pace advantage once Shoaib, Asif and Shabbir Ahmed - whose action has been cleared by the ICC - return to international cricket during next month's tour of South Africa. The trio have been included in a list of 25 probables invited for a conditioning camp starting in Lahore from tomorrow in preparation for the tour of South Africa.

"We would have a bowling attack stronger than Australia's if Shoaib, Asif and Shabbir return to the squad," Younis told The News at the National Stadium in Karachi. "We are already equipped with some good bowlers but once these three are back our attack would be awesome. All these three are valuable bowlers for their wicket-taking abilities and you need such players to win Tests against strong opponents."

Shoaib and Asif are available for selection for the tour of South Africa starting from January 4 after being cleared of doping offences by a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appeals committee earlier this month.

Pakistan rode on a good showing from pacers Umar Gul, Shahid Nazir, Abdul Razzaq and legspinner Danish Kaneria to beat West Indies 2-0 in a home Test series this season.

"The one thing that makes me very optimistic about our team's future is that bowlers like Umar Gul, Shahid Nazir and Mohammad Sami have been performing impressively in recent times and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan is also regaining good form," he remarked. "I must say that once we have all our pacers ready for national duty we would be better off than even Australia in this department of the game."

Younis, who led Peshawar Panthers into the semifinals of the ongoing Twenty20 Cup believes Pakistan would be in a good position to win the series in South Africa but was quick to add that the players will have to really apply themselves in what would be demanding playing conditions in South Africa. He played down fears that the Pakistan batsmen would flop on bouncy South African wickets.

"The South Africans are a top side but we are good enough to beat them. By applying ourselves and showing self belief we can do it. The going would be tough but I am confident we would be ready for the challenge."

I dont know about Shabbier in the bowkling attack, I've seen much better bolwers than him in Twenty20 matches.

Reason why they've spent soo much on him becuz they were inspired by Ashes winners 2005 Steve harmison bounce.

World cup is round the corner, i personally think its good chance to exhibit merging talents to the world. So, I would train Players like Fawad Alam Left-Hand opening batman from Karachi Dolphins, and Anwar Ali and Akhtar Ayub.

shoaib is still a huge question .. he has bowled poorly domestically.

IMO rana is our form bowler at the moment ..

gul, asif and rana should be our test quicks vs RSA.

shabbir as back up and lets see what becomes of shoaib.

If Shoaib, Asif, Rana, Gul, and Kaneria are all in the squad for South Africa, we definitely have a bowling attack to rival even Australia.

So you disregard altogether his record of 51 wickets in ten tests?
So you discount the fact that he was taking wickets consistently before the Ashes 2005 series, seemingly rubbishing your argument that Pakistan were 'inspired' by Harminson's bounce?

Shabbir's predicament is tragic for he is a bowler with alot of ability. History foretells the powerful wicket-taking weapon that is steepling bounce allied with accuracy, a staple of Ambrose, Walsh, McGrath and bowlers of that stature.
Pakistan have no other bowlers in that particular mould, so Shabbir is still very much an important addition to the side - if he is able to fully recover from the trauma of the last year.

A diversified pace attack consisting of pace, swing, guile and bounce can only better aid Pakistan's wicket-taking ability. Shabbir should not be dismissed out of hand.

No not really, Pakistan's bowling attack is very injury prone and not as consistent as people here would like you to believe, and the spin bowling department still has a big question mark over it. A fully fit Pakistani attack is probably the second best in the world at the moment, but a lot of things have to go perfectly for this attack to rival the Aussies', and these things never happen all at once.

Australian bowlers are more consistent and a lot more professional, and despite the constant bigging-up of other sides about how they can rival the Aussies, about how their own 'natural talent' is superior, the Aussie bowlers are not only top class on their own but they do what no other side is doing at the moment - they work as a unit to take 20 wickets and their performance levels are excellent in the vast majority of games - they are the best.

It is a mouth watering attack but they never seem to play together.

We can match Australia in bowling department only if Shoaib, Asif and Shabir are fit to play. Otherwise aus will still have edge.

well I would go as far to say that Pak has the 2nd best bowling attack in the world, if Asif and Shoibby are on the field together. But matching the aussie attack? Ummmmm Dream on.....

The same Hogg who was outperformed by Katich with the ball in a test match vs Zimbabwe? No need to see ourselves that short

Lets face it, post WC we will have the best bowling attack

We may have a bowling line up on paper to match Australia.

sadly our batting is nowhere near as good as Australia as a unit!

Asalaam alikum Wr Wb Brothers;

A fully fit shoaib alongside asif, gul, shabbir, rana, nazir, sami, kaneria and afridi makes a very powerful bowling attack ( Offcourse not all of the bowlers simultaneously). Shoaib,Asif,Gul,Shabbir and kaneria makes up a deadly bowling combination. Even Shoaib,Asif,Gul,Nazir/rana/sami alongside either kaneria or afridi makes a bowling combination second to none.

I agree with pakistan vice captain younis khan that pakistan's bowling attack is far better than australia's bowling with comebacks of shoaib, asif and shabbir not forgetting already available gul, nazir, rana, sami, kaneria and afridi.

I do agree that in the past we have'nt been able to field the above mentioned combinations due to various reasons but INSHALLAH from now on we will.

Romali rotti and whippy if you guys live in uk than i wish you had watched the " GEO" channel's live coverage of the " 20-20 ABN-AMRO Tornament" just concluded yesterday. The Live coverage materialised for the last five days and those of whom watched here in UK, in rest of european countries and back home in pakistan must have enjoyed it immensely and inexplicably. Romali roti you obviously have'nt seen the talent of bowlers we have available in pakistan otherwise you would'nt have said "dream on". Your response was typically indian, which is synonymous with bias and jealously. Keep it up romali rotti !

It is always a good idea that +ve remarks are said and players are edified once a big tournament or event like World Cup is nearby...Good job Younis Khan...Following on what Imran Khan started back in 1980s...
