This getting really rediculous now, first its just a niggle and he will be there for the first test, then he is out for 2 to 3 weeks and no thats not the end of it he may end up missing the world cup.

KARACHI: Pakistan’s medium pacer Umar Gul may be forced out of international cricket for almost three months if fears that he is suffering from an ankle fracture are confirmed following a medical examination in South Africa.

Sources close to the Pakistan team disclosed to this correspondent on Monday that after initial examination, doctors fear that the in-form bowler may have a serious ankle fracture rather than just a sprain and his injury could take several weeks to recover.

If the injury is confirmed, Gul might even miss the all-important World Cup to be held in the Caribbean islands from March 13 to April 28. It would be a major blow for Pakistan as Gul has been their most prolific strike bowler in 2006 and is seen as a key part of their bowling attack.

Gul, who has taken 61 wickets from 14 Tests, has been advised to undergo scans in a Johannesburg hospital on Tuesday (today), the results of which are expected to be available tomorrow.

Sources said that the 24-year-old Gul was carrying the ankle injury when he was included in the touring party late last month on the insistence of Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq who believed that his bowler would get fit in time for the opening Test against South Africa getting underway from January 11.

It was apparently because of this reason that Inzamam fielded Gul in a three-day practice game against Rest of South Africa that concluded in Kimberley on Monday. However, Gul broke down after bowling just three overs on the second day of the warm-up game.

The national team management was forced to ask for a replacement after it was confirmed that Gul’s injury was serious enough to sideline him from international cricket for several weeks.

The management asked the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to either send fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar or medium pacer Shabbir Ahmed as Gul’s replacement. The national selection committee opted in favour of Shoaib who would join the team ahead of the opening Test.

A PCB official said on Monday that it is yet to be decided whether Gul would stay with the team in South Africa or return home. The official said that Gul would reach Johannesburg with the Pakistan team today where he would undergo scans to check the seriousness of his injury.

At the moment, we have been told that Gul might not be able to play for the next three weeks but the exact position would only be revealed once the doctors see the scan reports,î said the official.

Pakistan are suffering from a series of problem in their lead-up to the Centurion Test. They would also be without top batsman Mohammad Yousuf who is staying home because of his wife’s surgery as well as talented all-rounder Shoaib Malik.

Malik is suffering from an ankle injury is unlikely to take part in the Test series.

The PCB official said that a decision on whether to replace Yousuf or Malik would only be taken once it is confirmed that they are out of the series and also whether the team management wants any more players. Pakistan selected an additional 17th man ñ reserve wicket-keeper Zulqarnain Haider ñ for the tour of South Africa.

What in the world? That's terrible news. He is a huge asset. Wish he recovers very quickly.

Read the article he was already carrying an injury, just worsened during the game. If he was suffering then it begs the question why in the world did he take part in 20 20.

I hope he can recover in time for the World Cup, he has bowled some lethal spells last year in ODIs and as we all know, he can produce that magical inswinging yorker.

Gul has to be the unluckiest bolwer in Pak cricket at the moment. He is bowling as well as he has ever bowled and now this.

Don't get too upset. It says he MAY have an ankle fracture. Just hope and pray that he is fine.

We will probably miss him in this test series more than during the World Cup. We have able backups in the ODI arena (Rana, even Sami).

Remember when Gul was being overbowled, just because there was no 3rd pacer. hmm there was one actually. Razzaq

You made the point...I was also saying the same thing when Gul was being over bowled in during the last series but we know the reasons...Inzi bhai wanted to have Razzi as the third pacer in the team and all Razzi was getting was only 12-14 overs in a whole test match and Gul was bowling around 50 bowlers being a fast bowler. Shahid abd Gul was carrying the whole load of bowling and Razzi bhai was the tourist in the team and now see what had happened to Gul.

We all know the reason of Shoaib Akhtar gotten injured many times in his career was also the same, He was alone trying to carry the load of "bowling".

Sad...really...and the funny thing is Inzi took Gul with him and left Akhtar home on the basis of "injury"....Inzi must be doped...

Oh well typical stupidity from inzamam, so it was ok to take GUl to S.A
whilst carrying an injury and hope he would be fit for 1st test but
akthar had to supposidly prove his fitness. Yet he all of a sudden
proves that after 1 warm up match.

What makes me laugh on top of that is akthar supposidly impressed
the selectors with his comeback??

Bari was doing hajj, iqbal qasim is in hospital and the 3rd pakistan
selector was with the team in S.A, so how did Akthar impress?

as per usual Inzamam and selectors are made to look like the fools they
truely are!!

Having followed Pakistani cricket for almost 21 years - all this drama hardly comes as a surprise ...Pakistani cricket set up is like a soap opera ..infact PCB can make a reality TV show and make lot of dough ... Can they not start Big Brother kind of show ??

Oh man, hes been awesome recently and this happens. I hope he gets well soon and makes it to the all important world cup but why was he taken to S.A and played in the warm up game when he was carrying a previous injury? Doesn't make sense.

Shows Inzi's double standards. I sure will be glad the day he is stripped of the captaincy, it will probably be good for Shoaib (for the constant scrutiny Inzi places him under) and Sami (asking him to reduce speed) as well. Inzi even backstabbed Waqar recently. I am sick and tired of people standing up for him, he clearly feels threatened by anyone who can pose a challenge to his leadership. You either have to toe his line or say goodbye. He has never won a match through his captaincy anyway and lacks the ability to make decisions under pressure. The first captain to lose against England in England in 24 years, and his dismissals were shocking.

The big man AKA the General must be watching all this with some disdain.... IMO their will be major clearing of house after the WC.

Inzi will definitely be forced out of captaincy... whether he retires or not will be his own decision.
