Pakistan's medical failure

The ongoing saga of injuries to Pakistan's players is diabolocial © AFP

"No doctor is better than three," according to a German proverb. The PCB has one at its head, another running its media and communications, and several more on its preposterous medical board of inquiry, which by my calculation is some way beyond three and a firm indication that the health of Pakistan's cricketers must be in a bad way--and it is.

My hypothesis is that Pakistan has the biggest injury problem in international cricket, and I'm sure one of the clever souls who visit this blog will be able to produce the evidence. That's before we begin a debate on the players' education about performance-enhancing drugs and the shambolic monitoring procedure of last year (let's not restart that particular debate here, you can comment on it elsewhere).

The ongoing saga of injuries to Pakistan's players is diabolocial. It seems few people know who is fit and who isn't. Fewer people know why anybody might be unfit. And nobody seems to know how to make anybody who is unfit fit again.

Sports science is a growing medical specialty. More research is being done. More evidence is available. Our shrinking and interconnected world allows greater sharing of knowledge and experts. Yet in Pakistan we have a medical board of inquiry that seems unable to prevent, manage, or cure the ailments of any of its prize patients.

The simple question I ask is would a business tolerate such a dismal success rate? Another question I ask is would any of you trust your treatment and your rehabilitation to this bunch of "experts." Inevitably, the PCB will say that it isn't responsible for the irresponsible behaviour of its player patients. The PCB will say that it is doing everything it can, and the medical board of inquiry is testament to that, as is its willingness to send players abroad for diagnosis and treatment. The PCB will say that this situation is a consequence of the modern game.

But I would say that those are excuses. The failure of the PCB's medical management is too persistent and too inexcusable for it to be tolerated any longer. Like any responsible employer, the PCB should seek a second opinion on its processes and its personnel. The present system is clearly not working.

By offering my opinion I am unfortunately adding to the peculiar preponderance of doctors associated with Pakistan cricket. But, then again, if I don't say this who will?

Exercise regimes such as Yoga and Pilates should be included in our cricketers training programmes to give them the edge when it comes to fitness, flexibility, strength and conditioning.

A supple body is less prone to injuries

I do a lot of surfing( I am not talking about the net) and yoga has helped me from incurring injuries

I think it is PCB's management trouble .they should change biriyani to some thing like pie or pasta.

This has to change, it's already costing us on the tour of south africa and if it dont change it will do in the future. PCB need to hire a fitness or basball coach!

the players in other teams are professionals. Maybe not England. they train and stay fit when they are not playing cricket and not in a camp held by PCB. It is their career and better is excpected from them. Players before this generation did it so why can't these

I wonder if PCB would leave the conservative nature and try having two fit fielder carry Shoaib during his runup and he can jump of right before the bowling crease. Actually I am not sure if some technicallity flaw can be manipulated so Shoaib doesn't even have to jump off and just swing his arm as the fielders carry him all the way.

I wish PCB was my team. I can try a few things and make a lot more money too

Shoaib is responsible for Pakistan's poor fitness reputation more than anyone else. They should make him take up a shorter run up to keep from breaking down every other match.

I saw some titles about injured players, but lets make a Disable List (DL), like they have in baseball..

here is the DL -

Shoaib Akthar - hamstring
Shabbir Ahmed - groin?
Umar Gul - ankle?
Mohammad Sami
Azhar Mahmood
Mohammed Asif
Sami Niazi - back issues

now Asif maybe nothing, hopefully nothing
Sami is back pain, not injury ..
but Mahmood could be knee?

how long are the others out for?

lets hope so for Asif's case..

but if you notice the list (I am sure there are more) all these guys are bowlers..

There is definitely something wrong with the picture..

and it all happened so recently ..

and our bowling coach has been mysteriously kicked out or forced to resign ..

I am not saying its Vickie's fault .. but I am sure he knows more than an avg person when it comes to training and conditioning for bowling ..

But does he know enough to avoid injuries and issues that have come up recently...

I am not one for conspiracy theories but DNA has launched an inquiry to the injuries .... are they trying to cite WAQAR YOUNIS as a reason for the excess injuries.. ???
