Happy Birthday Mohsin Khan
March 15, 1955
Birth of the classy, attractive Pakistan opener Mohsin Khan, who formed probably their best-ever opening partnership with Mudassar Nazar. His defining year was the annus mirabilis of 1982: Mohsin became the first Pakistani to make 1000 runs in a calendar year, he scored his first four Test centuries - including a delicious 200 that set Pakistan up for their first victory at Lord's - and on the tour of England he made 1248 runs at an average of 73. This came after Mohsin, who is one of only seven men to be out handled the ball in a Test, had a Ramprakashian flurry of near-misses at the start of his Test career: his first six scores were 44, 35, 38, 31, 46 and 41.

Oh Yes: I remember Mohsin Hassan Khan, but no one with the name Modsin Khan ever played for Pakistan...
There was a survey done in a British Newspaper during the 1982 tour of Pakistan in which they asked is there a batsman in both Pakistani team and the whole of County Cricket, who even if people ahead of time know will get out first ball, but they will still come to see him...
Majority voted for Mohsin Hassan Khan because even when he used to get out, he had a real style...
He was the find of Packer Era, when all the heroes had gone to the Australian Cricket Circus...
When he was leaving Pakistani Cricket and thinking about joining Film Industry in India, Imran Khan on hearing this laughed that it will be really funny to see Mohsin running after heroines...
He used to play Cricket for Malir Gymkhana and when he played for Pakistan in 1970s, after that at the beginning of the next season, his club reached a final and asked him to come and play…
He came to the ground, but stayed inside his car and asked captain to come near the car: He asked him to bat if he wins the toss…
Captain won the toss and elected to bat…
Mohsin came in to open…
Now the fast medium bowler of the opposition was really fired up to do something against Test Player: He came in with all his venom and what ever technique he knew of swing bowling, since pitch was made off concrete and all a bowler can do is to either hit the seam or use the swing…
First ball Mohsin Khan’s middle stump went cart-wheeling and bowler and opposing team went crazy…
Mohsin Hassan Khan got very angry, went back to his car, asked captain to arrange another match with the same team next week and went back home without taking part in fielding…
Next week Mohsin Khan hammered the same fast bowler for four sixes in the first over and went on to make a double hundred in the 40 overs game…
Happy Birthday Mohsin Khan...

he was quite self involved. my dad was twelfth man for some side match. and a bunch of my dads friends. planned something where a bunch of girls would ignore him and come to my dad for autographs. it was hilarious my dad said.
a good player no doubt more like shoaib akhtar in personality though.

I was at Lords when he made his double hundred - and I saw him and Javed chase the final innings target down in irrepresible fashion on the last day.
That series was the first time I actually saw Test cricket in the flesh. I remember going to Edgebaston on the 1st day - not knowing much about the game. And wondering why the West Indians in the stand were banging on biscuit tins and doing a jig whenever Imran blasted another Englander out.
Those Pakistani players all seemed 10 feet tall and supermen to me back then. Golden memories .....

Mohsin was a horrible actor, I think. He also appeared in few TV dramas as well.

Bijli? i bet she a 'shocking' looking woman :)

Sangeeta Bijlani: Miss India 1980
A name to reckon with on the ramp, Sangeeta switched to acting in Hindi films before she married the famous cricketer, Mohammed Azharuddin. She and Azhar have launched their own production company, which will produce television serials.

Sorry about being a bit OTT...
My favourite Pakistani player from the 80's was one Qasim Omar.
I saw him play in a couple of ODI's at Sydney with my dad when I was a boy.
He really was a crowd favourite!
I distinctly remember the letter "O" (or was it "Q"?) being affixed to the centre front of his white helmet.
Funny guy :)

I remember Moshin Khan,
Before the 99 worldcup, he was sent to the uk by Prime TV to interviews as a buildup to the 99 world cup.
It was a sad state of affairs, He looked tottaly off his head most of the time....
He only got a handful of exclusive interviews with the likes of....wait for it, a groundsman at Headingly and some Pakistani local club cricketers all looked to be recorded on a camcorder.
I will never forget that belly, red turtle neck jumper and black leather jacket he wore in the middle of the English summer while presenting the show.

I remember a game when after Lanka beat India couple of years ago (in a close game)...Mohsin uttered the famous words 'Lanka might have won the game but in my book India is the real winner'
I mean what the heck...who cares about your book; Lanka won and India lost, end of story!
I made a pretty popular thread about him on the Old PP (I believe)
I mean, if Brown Nosing was a sport, then Akram/Mohsin would be undefeated champs without ever competing against anyone :9:

....wow, if I remember correctly, I have read some Majid or Imran interviews....and it seems like this name was mentioned by either Imran, Majid or both. Did he play with Imran and/or Majid for Lahore Gymkhana? I mean your dad (Sher Afghan)- not your grand dad.

yeah he was lahore gymkhana regular. quite amazing i did not expect anyone to remember him.
The thing is we had this hierarchy in our family. Where only certain players were backed. during his time.

Reena Roy's gain was Pakistan's loss. I believe they divorced.
A stylish batsman who as others have said had his finest hour with that double century at Lords.

yep my grand dad might be the greatest player not to play internationally from our family. He also apparently was invited to the hockey trials.
The story goes regarding my grandfather that he went with javed burki to the pakistan trials. And he just got ****** because he was asked to field, called everyone blackys and so on. and left. without ever batting and so on.
And was asked again many times. but refused to ever show up again.
he remained involved as adminstrator for lahore, and captain and so on.
My father said that he could bat for ages.

Mohsin Khan (alive and well) can be seen on Geo TV prior to Pak games in the warm up programme.
He looked quite sober on Tuesday - not sure what he was like after the game.
