MULTAN: A deal between President Pervez Musharraf and two exiled leaders — PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto and PML-N Chief Mian Nawaz Sharif — was given final shape on Thursday it is learnt.
Well-placed sources disclosed that two serving generals were instrumental in brokering the deal. However, political future of the Chaudhris was not the part of deal agenda as the two exiled leaders have an edge over the allies of President Musharraf whose government is facing a serious judicial crisis, the sources said.
They said that President Musharraf’s successor might be inducted from NWFP keeping in view of socio-political sensitive environment of the province, a centre of right wing alliance of MMA.
According to the salient features of the deal, Benazir Bhutto and Mian Shahbaz Sharif would be allowed to return Pakistan safely without any threat of facing cases. Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry would be reinstated amicably with respect.
President Musharraf would doff uniform after being elected president from the present assemblies for the next five years with the cooperation of PPP, PML-N and PML-Q. The PPP and PML-N has finally agreed to give a vote of confidence to President Musharraf through present assemblies. Musharraf would give an equal opportunity to all political parties to participate in the next general elections with the assurance of transparency in elections.
The formation of the governments at the centre and provincial levels was not discussed in the deal meeting. Benazir Bhutto had a detailed meeting with PPP senior leader Malik Ghulam Mustafa Khar three days before to discuss offers and deal matters.
Though Khar was busy in the marriage ceremony of his nephew, he left for the UAE when Benazir phoned him thrice. Khar reached Dubai where he also attended the death anniversary of PPP founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto on April 4.
The sources said that American administration has expressed satisfaction over the resumtion of back-channel dialogue between PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto and President Musharraf.
The sources said it was the judicial crisis that forced President Musharraf to resume the suspended negotiations with the help of a senior politician and some army generals.
However, Benazir demanded a safe path to PML-N. Mian Nawaz Sharif refused to become a part of the deal and it was decided that Mian Shahbaz Sharif would land in Pakistan. Both the mainstream leaders would come back to Pakistan before the next general elections, said the sources.
