For me national interest is supreme, says Miandad

KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain and coach Javed Miandad said on Saturday that he will keep national interest prime if asked to again take up the responsibility as coach of the Pakistan team.

“I have always kept national interest above all and will continue to do so in the future,” he told APP in response to a query whether he would like to accept the coaching assignment of the national team for a fourth time if asked by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

“It is a hypothetical question but I can only think about it if the offer comes to me,” Miandad, Pakistan’s highest run-getter with 8832 in 124 Test matches, said.

“I have to think about various options if any offer comes through,” replied the former skipper — who has not applied for the coaching job, advertised by the PCB few weeks ago.

The country’s premier batsman Miandad, who will turn 50 on June 12 this year, said he had served the country with honour and dignity and it was always his wish that Pakistan team perform well in the international arena.

PCB chief Dr Nasim Ashraf in a recent statement had said they (PCB) were looking for a foreign coach and he would be appointed within next few months.

However, some cricketing circles and Javed Miandad supporters in Pakistan believe that a home coach could be more useful considering our environment and Miandad was a good choice for the assignment.

Miandad dispelled the impression created by certain circles that by winning three-match series in Abu Dhabi against Sri Lanka 2-1, the Pakistan team was back on track after the World Cup debacle.

“It was like festival cricket in Abu Dhabi. It is good that Pakistan’s full strength team beat an under strength Lankan team but it is not worth celebration,” he remarked.

“Winning the World Cup, Asia Cup or a major away series is worth celebrating and not series like in Abu Dhabi,” he observed.

“The Pakistan team has got the same old lot except for Fawad Alam and Najaf Shah,” he said. “We must look for consistency because it is the national duty of the players to perform well,” he maintained.

He said look at the Australians, they won the World Cup for a third time since 1999 and their celebrations were over after having a breakfast with Prime Minister John Howard.

“We need a good strategy and planning on a long-term basis. Boys should learn from their mistakes and improve upon it,” Javed Miandad said.

“THe Pakistan team can only enhance their performance and status by looking at a team such as Australia,” he said.

“We need a good team and should have a proper back-up line to fill the void in emergencies,” he pointed out.

I dont agree with the bit that desi are always behind money wheas goreys are honest. I know many greedy gaureh who would do anything for money. The thing is you cant generalise such things and you always get all sorts everywhere. Anyway, one could look greedy to others (matter of opinion) but all he could be doing is speaking for his rights just like we may do or already get.

Miandad has no chance of being coach .. he's family with Dwood Ibrahim now ... no way PCB is going to give him any official position with his ties to the gambling mafia.

Festival cricket? Both teams were pretty damn serious and Pakistan were also without Younis Khan and Shoaib Akhtar.

If I remember correctly, in his (Miandad) last tenure, he was in fight with PCB over money dispute. He was claiming that he is sacked, therefore, they should pay him money for remaining period. Additionally, his financial contracts were rediculous, like he was getting paid based on matches he played as a player.

No doubt he was a great player and did great service for Pakistan cricket and contributed to 1992 WC victory, but he is greedy man. During his playing years, he always fought with Imran for money, whenever Imran diverted any money to Hospital, he complained. Now again showing interest in coaching only for money.

This is the age of analysis and effective man management , things not in Miandads reportoire I'm sure. We need another Bob Woolmer to have any hope of building a top team.

Although I would like to see his antics once again like those batting instructions given to Moin in 2004.

"National interest is prime".

This is a fantastic excuse. It's used all the time in all walks of life in Pakistan.

It's the only excuse that Miandad could possibly use about taking up the coaching job again.

In other words, it's not about the money, prestige, power, spotlight etc of being the coach. No....it is all for the sake of Pakistan and he, Miandad, would probably do it for that - but only for that mind you.

Money, money and more money...thats what its all about...

people should accept that our society is based on corruption and greed, once more and more people acknowledge that then perhaps something can be done about it...
but if people continue to put their heads in the sand then this system will continue to prevail...

our cricket system is just like that of society in general...go to karachi and you'll know what i mean...roads and bridges being built but subcontractors who get the job only do so by bribing someone higher up the chain to obtain the contracts...the result...badly built roads and bridges...badly made sewage systems...electrical failures 10 times every day...

same thing happening in our cricket system...

Even though you claim to be a proud Pakistani, I see you are having serious identity crisis issue here.

Coaching has become highly technical and a skilled profession these days. Unfortunately, Miandad has not upgraded his skills to match the criteria.
Although Miandad's natural coaching abilities may have been sharp or not remains debatable but there is NO doubt that Miandad was one of the best batsman Pakistan has ever produced.

I agree with Javed that Abu Dhabi was nothing so much to jump up and down or get excited so mucha bout. It was a full strength Pakistan team more or less as Akhtar hasn't played for a long time and younis i wouldnt have in my odi team anyway. the lankans were way under par but still i would say would have more to be proud off and gained more without murali, vaas, sanga and no malinga in one game.

Waisay Javed is a legend and talks sense although his ability to manage people has been poor always...but i am one who still think no matter how many stints hes had he has never had proper back up as the coach and a proper run. anyone think otherwise well thats your opinion.
