We want consistency in openers, chief selector
LAHORE: Chief selector, Salahuddin Ahmed said opener Imran Farhat was not considered for a training camp because the selectors wanted to continue with Salman Butt, Imran Nazir and Muhammad Hafeez by giving them ample opportunity.
“We want to give every opener a fair enough chance to prove his potential as we are looking for building Pakistan’s future team,” he said here on Wednesday.
The camp is for the build up of the team to play two one-day matches in England, first on July 1 against Scotland and second on July 3 against India.
The chief selector was of the view that consistency should be maintained rather than opting for a make shift policy, a common practice of the past which badly disturbed the entire batting order.
“We are in the process of re-calling and trying out various players and it does not mean that a player not selected is overlooked for ever, still there is a chance for him and he can be called for coming assignments,” he said.
He said it is not wise to include a number of players for a specialised position in a squad or a training camp by minimising the choice of selection for other slots.
“We want to stick to a policy to select lesser number of players for certain positions to fully concentrate on them and to give them a fair chance to prove so that they should justify their selection,” he said.
“Imran is a talented batsman and he can play cricket for long time but there are other players also in the line and every one will be given a fair chance,” he said.
He said after resolving the opening pair problem the selectors want to pay attention on strengthening the middle order. “That is the reason we have re-called Misbah ul Haq and Naved Latif to see if they can fit in, in the middle order because we want to make our batting balanced in all aspects by having specialised batsmen, not make shift batsmen,” he asserted.
The chief selector said it is just a two match series and a lot more cricket will be played in the future and those who are not called must not feel disappointed.
