We want consistency in openers, chief selector

LAHORE: Chief selector, Salahuddin Ahmed said opener Imran Farhat was not considered for a training camp because the selectors wanted to continue with Salman Butt, Imran Nazir and Muhammad Hafeez by giving them ample opportunity.
“We want to give every opener a fair enough chance to prove his potential as we are looking for building Pakistan’s future team,” he said here on Wednesday.
The camp is for the build up of the team to play two one-day matches in England, first on July 1 against Scotland and second on July 3 against India.
The chief selector was of the view that consistency should be maintained rather than opting for a make shift policy, a common practice of the past which badly disturbed the entire batting order.
“We are in the process of re-calling and trying out various players and it does not mean that a player not selected is overlooked for ever, still there is a chance for him and he can be called for coming assignments,” he said.
He said it is not wise to include a number of players for a specialised position in a squad or a training camp by minimising the choice of selection for other slots.
“We want to stick to a policy to select lesser number of players for certain positions to fully concentrate on them and to give them a fair chance to prove so that they should justify their selection,” he said.
“Imran is a talented batsman and he can play cricket for long time but there are other players also in the line and every one will be given a fair chance,” he said.
He said after resolving the opening pair problem the selectors want to pay attention on strengthening the middle order. “That is the reason we have re-called Misbah ul Haq and Naved Latif to see if they can fit in, in the middle order because we want to make our batting balanced in all aspects by having specialised batsmen, not make shift batsmen,” he asserted.
The chief selector said it is just a two match series and a lot more cricket will be played in the future and those who are not called must not feel disappointed.

Good idea, they should be more consistan with the players and at least give them a chance to prove their worth. Good call.

Mr Salahuddin and other selectors can we have some consistancy in comments rather then usual BS please?

so in article above Hafeez is considered an opener?

Yet intrestingly in one of his 1st interviews he said that Hafeez would only be considered as an all-rounder not an opener.

“Imran is a talented batsman and he can play cricket for long time but there are other players also in the line and every one will be given a fair chance,” he said.

Doesn't that mean there won't be any consistency as batsmen will be rotated and we have got a fair number of openers.

“That is the reason we have re-called Misbah ul Haq and Naved Latif to see if they can fit in, in the middle order because we want to make our batting balanced in all aspects by having specialised batsmen, not make shift batsmen,”

Uh Oh! Naved Latif, a true one innings wonder. Scored a century once back in 2001, failed on every other occasion. He plays well on flat pitches, thats it. Hes also in his 30s and frankly if we are giving him a chance, why stop there. We should bring in Wasti too.

If i remember rightly fellow selector saleem jafar also indicated that only specalist openers would be looked at for roles to play.

what is consistency according to our selectors? Its just revolving door of picking 3 openers for one series, one fails another one gets a chance, the other fails another one comes in, and it continues.

Seriously, why not introduce couple of new faces in the squad or just stick with nazir/Salam which i think is pretty decent.

A specialist opener who averages under 20 with a strike rate of under 60?

only way they have a chance of consistency is to get new openers or atleast one new one so the other one can either learn or get replaced later. the rest have been tried enough

Seems more and more liklely that Salman would get an extended run - and deservedly so.

from out current bunch of specialist openers only Salman shd be given a decent run. Farhat, Taufiq, Nazir, Hameed, Hafeez are all tried and tested failures. Selectors shd find some entirely new opener from domestic and give that guy a decent run with Salman.

thats a different matter. If his average is 20, it doesn't mean that he can't be specialist opener

Forget consistency in openers, first and foremost, we want Consistency in Selectors selections
