Liverpool will play AC milan in the champions league final in istanbul in a few weeks time. behind real madrid these two are the most sucsessful teams in europes premier competetion.

The question is shudnt european cup wins and champions league wins be counted seperated?

When teams like liverpool, notts forest etc won the european cup in the 1970s/80s etc there representation was as the champions of england from the previous season.

however, now we get the "champions league" a money making competetion where the winners of the competetion may have only entered the competetion after finishing 3rd or even 4th etc in their respective league.

The winners of the "champions league" are given a tally of a win and its counted as a european cup win?

why should that be the case?

to me the european cup and champions league are to completely different competetions. winning the trophy is a great achievement in either case. However the old european cup to me was the true representation to the best team in europe as champions only entered.

Football fans know that the tru CHAMPIONS cup was in fact the European Cup. The only way you could participate in it was to have been the CHAMPIONS in your respective league.

Lets say Liverpool win this years CL...as much as I would like them to win, they only finished 4th in the Prem last year.

Great champions of English football are Liverpool and Nottingham Forest who won the trophy 6 times between them as CHAMPIONS...the old RealMadrid team of the 50s/60s...AC MIlan in the early 90s.

It is all about income generation..wont be surprised if they let the top 5 in one day!

The European cup has always been the more moral tournament. Nowadays it is like a business making more and more money.

when Man Utd faced Bayern in 1999 both were on course for domestic trebles. Utd were definitely the best team in Europe when they won it. Now with the knockouts there are joke sides winning.
