Following the Your favourite Punjabi Word (http://www.pakpassion.net/ppforum/showthread.php?t=43530&highlight=punjabi) thread, I thought it was only fair that we had a Favourite Urdu word thread :D

So fire away, what's your favourite Urdu word? I must say Urdu is a beautiful language isn't it, classy I'd say.

Doesn't zabardasth mean 'great' or 'fantastic'?

it is dast and original word is zabardast not zabardasth (I think). Now that is something if you are around the person and person is commentating on every walk to the bathroom. I think english people have a word for it where you say something and it also means something else

Bilkul Saheeh farmaya !

Dast as in hand ( I think) Vs Dasth as in "the runs" .... farsi in origin, I believe

no I am not but that "hum tehel raya hain" sounded strange. it will come from someone who doesn't have urdu as first language and just sounded bengali. Hum Tahel Rahey Hain

I've heard an Aunt utter it when she's meant to be jogging - Urdu is her first language. It sounds cute. Tehelna is walking but not swiftly, that's how I understand it.

yes thank you. Pakistanis are very sensitive to this matter

Dil hi to hey na sung o khist <--- :26: the two words could be farsi
durd say bhar na aiye kiyon
royein gey hum hazaar baar
koi humaiy sataye kiyon

for thoes who want to hear it. There will be probably 10 words you have to think about (not used regularly) but it is just beautifull http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wA3zQRtL_iw

This drama is recommended not just because it is good but has classic urdu

Ghalib was ahead of his time and was following Pakistan cricket

Hazaroon khuahisain aisy kay her khuwashi par dum niklay (Palistan will win here and there)
bahot niklay meray urman, lekin phir bhi kum niklay
niklna khund say adam ka suntay aye hein lekin (beyizati)
bahot bayabro ho kar teray koochay say hum nikilay (loss in WCs)

(another poem)
dil e nadaan tujhey hua kiya hey (following some of the pakistan cricket players)
akhir is dard ki dawa kiya hay
hum ko un say wafa ki hay umeed (Mo Yo and others during ICL crisis or not being team players)
jo nahein jantay wafa kiya hey
hum hein mushtaq or woh baizaar ( I can make it out but not sure)
ya illahi yeh majra kiya hay
jub bhi tuj bin koi nahien koi majood (no match winners or people to count on)
phir yeh hungama aye khuda kiya hay
jaan tum par nisar karta hoon
main nahien janta hua kiya hay
