Yasir Arafat, a member of the visiting Pakistani team, lost his passport after landing in Calcutta on November 27.
“Soon after arriving in the city, Arafat misplaced his passport. The Pakistani embassy in New Delhi has been informed,” Damayanti Sen, the deputy commissioner of police (special branch), told Metro on Sunday.
A senior police officer said that the Pakistani all-rounder realised on November 29 that his travel document was missing. “We do not know where he misplaced his passport. Arafat says he had kept it in his bag after landing at Calcutta airport. But he couldn’t find it when he was looking for it on November 29,” the officer added.
Arafat informed the team management and the local manager of the team, Sultan Ahmed, about the loss. Officers of the special branch were alerted and a diary was lodged at Hastings police station.
According to Ahmed, Arafat may have misplaced his passport at Eden Gardens, where he had gone for practice. “The document was in the bag which he had taken to the stadium,” Ahmed said, adding that the grounds, dressing room and the stadium’s lobby were checked before the formal complaint was filed.
The Pakistan cricket board has been informed. “I am in touch with the Pakistani embassy in New Delhi. A new passport will be issued to Arafat after the third Test in Bangalore,” said Ahmed.
