PP Battrick League III - Discussion Thread

This year, as you may know, me and hari have taken the opportunity to run the 3rd PakPassion Battrick league.

In this thread, you should put your name down if you want to take part in it next season.

There are a limit of 20 contestants which is purely first come first served basis.

To avoid confusion after you put your name down to take part, here is the format of the tournament.

The furthest a team got in this years cup competition was the 4th round and we are sticking with that limit. And so after 4 weeks of cup competition from the start of the season, that leaves us with 14 weeks to carry out this tournament.

the 20 participants will for 2 groups of 10 (picked by Saj to avoid bias)

All teams in each group of 10 will play each other, that will take up to 9 weeks. This means all teams are garunteed atleast 9 matches

Then, the top 4 from each league will advance in to the quarter finals

Then that will lead to semifinals and then a final and an eventual winner being crowned.

Rules this year are the same as last year with a couple being emphasised.

The maximum we will allow a team to go in the cup is the 4th round, if you get to the 4th round and still want to compete in the PP tournament then you have to throw your match.

Another rule is that if you fail at accept a challenge then there are no excuses, you will be banned from taking part in the tournament any longer.

we're taking into account the cup game and have noted in the original post that all participants should be out by the 4th round. Noone should play a 5th round match, even if it means they have to throw a match. ;-)

yea the delay is there for emergancies (or freak incidents like MCM mentioned in the other thread), we still won't tollerate people playing 5th round cup matches or people not accepting challenges.

Yea but they're all young and in training. For instance, I can vow to say that Qamar Ijaz will not play a game. Also, Siddiq's rating is really high because he has superb fielding.

I think we should allow everyone one play over 20k. Also, all of the team's players can't be in the 10k+ range. At least 3-4 (w/e you guys decide) should be under 10k.

izee thats an interesting point, maybe not so much the team can t play playesr in the 10k rating but limiting them to only 1 over 20k seems interesting.

lets see what hari thinks, and izee can u post ur suggestion in the thread in PP leagues aswell so this one doesn't get cluttered up and so other people can have their say on your suggestion there.

First of all thanks for letting me join this competition, it will be great fun I'm sure.

As far as team selection restriction are concerned then please go ahead and amend the rules that you consider will make this tournament entertaining for all.

I'm hoping to play most of my reserves in these games and the player restrictions may add to the team selection dilemmas/tactics.

You can still play, of course. It will be a good chance for you. Just that you will hardly win any games, but your players will gain experience.

Also, you also get guaranteed friendlies this way, otherwise you gotta search for them.

How did we get to 22 participants?

I was messing around with some fixtures and things and have had some problems so far. With 20 players half way down the track of getting a feel of fixtures I found a problem with teams either missing a game week or having to overlap.

The same problem will occur with 22 so i'm going to see whats best, 24 or 16. Not a fan of 24 as its too big a number and if its 16 Then I might have to drop out myself if we are to accomodate everyone.

So it's either going to have to be groups of 12 or 8.

There are two groups, so it will be the same fixtures for Group B as well.

There's 2 groups call them Group A and Group B for sake of simplicity and each group has 10 teams.

Both groups fixtures will follow the formula MCM posted.

I guess there will be no seeding system, so it will be a case of put the names in a hat and get my 2 daughters to pull the names out of the hat :)

the first day when u get your team and need to settle in is the worst it will get. I have exams this month aswell but everything will be smooth.

you know your cricket so it will be easier for you to set your team and stuff on the 1st day and then after that it's just about adjusting it a day or 2 before your match starts

Its not complicated if you listen to us. And its not time consuming. You just have to log in once every two or three days to set your order for games. Don't worry about it.

Good idea -- opens up the comp for more teams, interest in the league stages will hopefully remain till the end with 4 spots in each group up for grabs.

QF's should line up as follows:

4th Group B v 1st Group A (Match 1)
3rd Group A v 2nd Group B (Match 2)
3rd Group B v 2nd Group A (Match 3)
4th Group A v 1st Group B (Match 4)

(keeps better teams apart until SF's and Final -- and let's teams placed 3rd and 4th in group stages have choice of type of pitch and home advantage).

Winner Match 2 v Winner Match 1
Winner Match 3 v Winner Match 4

Then you have the team that topped Group A playing the team that topped Group B in the semis, they should be seeded 1 and 2 and kept apart until the Final.
It also means the teams that came 2nd and 3rd in both groups have an easier route to the final.

You'll find many International tourneys would adopt the set up I laid out above.

Guys, have you had a think about the changes to the BT fixtures this season and how it may affect our comp. I'm thinking about the BT-20 tournament which is due to take place after the 7th FC and OD fixtures (half-way through the season)

The BT-20 qualifying will last for 7 days (Sat to Fri) and no other domestic games will be played in this period (including the friendlies which usually take place on the Sunday).

I think the best 2 placed teams from each group proceed to the knock-out comp which is due to take place at the end of the season.

Please let me know if you need any assistance in scheduling fixtures etc.

I know we said you guys could play up to the 4th cup game but I'm afraid we'll have to change that rule. Everyone can play up to the 4th cup round maximum. So that means you have to try to throw your 3rd round cup game.

The reason for this change is that if we started on the 24th it would be really tight to finish the full 12 weeks of tournament, especially as the BT20 will be taking place midseason so it might be uncertain how many friendlies are available at the end of the season.

I was also never a fan of that. I was hoping to get to the 5th round of the cup and my previous understanding was that we would have to throw the 4th round game which I agreed to as I thought I would lose then anyway.

But throwing the 3rd round game is kind of harsh.

What are the consequences for a team that does not throw their game and is still in the cup? They get eliminated? or do they just forfeit the match?

Well I have a first week bye, so I can go further. But MKR, if you don't drop it, you'll just have to "lose" ur first game.

Concede the match they miss.

We could wait for everyone to play atleast the 4th match but that might mean we have a really tight schedule with maybe a friendly running into the next season.

Open question, would people rather have the deadline extended to 4th round max with a tight schedule or a 3rd round max with some flexibility. Hopefuly we can get a few opinions because if the majority want one thing we'll go ahead with that to ensure full commitment!

We had been 4th round in the beginning, and that is what I had agreed on. I am willing to forgo that though if the rules of the tournament dictate otherwise. If there is a large enough consensus to change it then make it 4th but if not then I will abide by the rules and throw my 3rd round match.

When we agreed on 4th it was before the changes to the timeing of the BT20 tournament. But still that should mean that the same number of weeks are being played out in a season and so the tournament shouldn't be a problem if it does start the week after the 4th.
But as this is the 1st season with a new timeing for BT20 i'm still not fully sure how the end of the season will pan out so thats why I thought it might be a safer option if we all throw the 3rd round game.

I'll wait to hear from hari on the issue before making another final decision and I promise we'll stick by the decision this time.

hey goldy, I think you should be ok to play. I'll ask hari about it aswell but because of the way it's worked out, in each group there will be a bye so I'm sure you will be able to fill in one of the groups easily.

Having a bit of a problem in deciding what pitch I should use against MCM.

I normally play on Green but seeing as though his best bowlers are medium pacers - he'll end up tearing through my side on a green pitch.

I'm thinking of changing the pitch to maybe something like flat and neutralise his bowling as much as possible and hope I maintain his 2 best batsmen.

I don't know about flat though, that would hurt me just as much.

I'm going to read a few more articles and stuff before I decide what to go with... but does anyone else have any suggestions?

If you have a few decent spinners I think the best pitch against mcm is dusty. But judging by your post all your bowlers are pace. Whatever you do, don't go for cracked, slow might work, H&F and slow are the best choices me thinks.

BTW - For me dusty is thrown out of the window as I have no decent spinners :(

I would say, since you are already through to the next round, it would be better for you to rest your key players and play your second XI. You would need your best players in top fitness in the knockout round.

I'm going to try a cracked pitch in this FC game coming up and will see how my bowlers and batsmen do for that. because like MCM said, I might use some of my 2nd XI

Edit: Not sure. I think I can afford to play my First XI on sunday because the reserves will be playing in the OD game on friday. I think it'd be better to paly the first team as it'd show me where I rank against the best.

I've seen your reporters summary on a variable pitches through out this season and they all better mine.

I don't mind the result too much but I think playing against teams like yours will help me with the tactical side in the long run!

SB I took TIE on my OD match today and lost by a huge margin. I would have had trouble winning it anyway. My team is doing well fitness wise and will be ready for you. Although one of my openers might have trouble with fitness. I hope I can at least bat and last 50 overs.

I am playing an incredibly strong team against Karachi Blues tomorrow. I don't think I need to but I want to. I am opening with a proficient and strong batsman. My numbers 3 and 4 are both quality. Then comes another proficient batsman. Followed by a respectable. Skip the keepr. We've got a respectable bowler, a quality one, a superb one, and then a respectable one. I don't think I have ever had a better team.

And I must say, I owe it all to SB. Ever since he bidded on a guy for me, my team has been improving loads. It was that time SB, that I got that competent 17 year old bowler for JUST 12k. Thank you Straight Bat.

P.S. For got about my number 3 batsman who's quality, is also a bowler at superb :P

Lol no problem, it worked out well for me aswell.

I remember that bidding process well though, Ghias Islam was meant to be coming to me for a bargin at something like 550k but then izee bumped up the price past 600k but I still bidded. I didn't mind paying the extra bits because he was worth it. I was suprised he didn't go for more to be honest.


Back on topic, you have a great team there Izee. Can't speak for anyone else but I know I'm not looking forward to playing you again.

All the teams are as strong as each other, otherwise we wouldn't be here.

I would have preffered a random draw to determine home matches but the rules were set out ages ago and that can't change.

Mind you, if I had a decent spinner then I wouldn't be complaining either!
