in karachi where i currently reside. One day he came upon to see one of his ailing friends at the same hospital where my late mother was hospitalized for her kidney dialysis. It was 2 years ago. Zia Uddin Hospital. He was the most arrogant and impolite person akin to a beast I had ever seen in real life. He had two bodygurads with him. Both seemed quite arrogant to me in their walking style. In a word, he is def not a friendly, smiling type of person atleast with ordinary people.

Now change your perception my dear friend. Smiling with celebrities or team-mates is a different ball game altogether. In real life, these big names have an arrogant attitude. I am damn sure on this because my eyes could not be deceived.

yes i have met him. My friend took me round his brothers house. I think he had come from derbyshire at the time after a blistering 60 odd and i remember that when umer rasheed (the friend that took me there) how he got out his reply was a scary the usual, ie slogging (i think, it was a while back). The brother was mautishim rasheed current fielding coach and he also had brought mohammed ali the left arm seamer with him.

Not too sure about that, could have been bcoz he was in a hospital. Yes i met him when they toured england, our chairman of azad jammu cricket club invited 6 players for dawat at his house and also called us players too, we met rana naved, afridi, inzi, younis khan razzler and kami bhai. shahid was as polite as can be very happy to talk to me and offer some batting tips also signed my kit and bat. yes it is true he had a very firm hand grip a proper pathan style also he had a very strong bear hug too. Younis khan was the joker of the team they all said and razzler and kami were sitting in corner of the rooms after eating texting there wives. Also i talked to kami about keeping and he was also keen to show me the ropes and improve my keeping. All in all it was a pleasant experience.

have met him twice and my brother also took him to play golf here in london - i think three years ago...

he was then a very amateur golfer and when he was teeing off he took a long time eyeing it up...so long in fact that my brother said 'if only you concentrated this hard when batting!'
which did draw a small smile on his face...

i met him at my cricket club during the usual annual sixes tourny we hold for first class crickets enjoying their benefit year..

he smashed some very big sixes...but not the biggest....one of our very own 'pakistany' players hit the biggest sixes of the day...

I saw Shahid Afridi at Edgbaston after the ICC Champions Trophy 2004 match against India he was signing autographs. He seemed happy and very friendly towards the pak fans.. maybe that was because we beat india lol!

I met Shahid Afridi once and as my eyes met his, my body disentegrated into a million little pieces. I guess his demonic glare combined with the ferocity of his facial expression led to my demise, it was a very distressful experience. Keep me away from that dangerous animal, he's mindblowingly frightening.

I totally disagree with asad100101 and the image that he is trying to portray of Afridi.

I met him a couple of years ago at Leicester :-

http://www.pakpassion.net/gallery/showimage.php?i=139&catid=searchresults&searchid=386

Despite him being crowded by a bunch of stupid, arrogant and selfish Pakistani fans, he still smiled and signed autographs for them. I approached him and asked him politely if I could take a picture of him. He looked at me almost in amazement as if to say "finally someone who is polite". He stood and chatted away with me for a while, even though his team mates were walking well ahead of him by this time.

I've met him many times. Shook his hand only once. Never shook his hand again and dont plan to.

At UBL sports complex he was training with a couple of friends and I had just completed my training session at the Asif Iqbal cricket academy held in the same complex. When i found out he's in the complex, i just walked up to him. He was on the ground stretching. I just stood there and decided not to disturb him when when he stood up and said salam and shook my hand without me even trying. Very friendly indeed. He loves his fans fo sure.

As a ball picker at national stadium karachi i encountered the beast many times. Once he was really pissed cuz miandad talked **** to him, which was hilarious.

A friend of mine, went to school with him. I am gonna call my friend and gonna ask him about his handshake and the type of person he is. This friend of mine is actually a brother of my good friend here in Canada. I recently got to know my good friend's brother by working out with him, but he never mentioned that he went to school with afridi, His brother told me recently that he did and Afridi even visited him after making it big. This friend of mine lives on campus in Windsor, very far from my city, not really in touch with him, but will get a hold of him to find out about Afridi. Give me a day or two.

I met him by accident at Dubai airport. I was in dubai heading back to london. He walked straight past and I called out and he turned round and had a chat to him as he was going into the business lounge. It was just after pak had been hammered by Aus in that 'home' test series in sharjah. Asked him what happened and he said these things happen and that it was in the past now. Got his autograph etc. He was a nice guy. Can confirm his handshake is solid!

I ran into him in a PIA flight from karachi to lahore. He started playing an year or so ago and was well known. However, to my surprise none of the passengers went up to him or asked for his autograph, including me. Instead he was the one looking at everyone in the plane to see if anyone recognizes him or give him any "lift". He had a group of "pathan looking" young guys with him, probably his cousins and they all looked like a bunch of "chichoras". He had no grace, no class and no personality. He looked like an arrogant and fame addicted cheapster.

Question for Majid 786. Are you 10 years old ? Your kiddish obsession with Afridi and his "strong handshake" is hillarious. Havent you had enough of this selfish, good for nothing and getting worse with every series batsman. He must be one of the biggest dissapointment in the history of Pakistan cricket, probably second to Shoaib Akhtar. Get over him man. Having a strong handshake is not worth a dime if you can't bat.

apart from generalizations and looks, he almost got his ass handed to him right at the beginning of his career when he teased a girl on a flight. the girl's brother was unfortunately there and all too willing to give Afridi what he deserved. the story goes that Saleem Malik saved Afridi's sorry and cheap behind from a thrashing.

the story was all over the papers. in conclusion, Afridi doesn't just "look" cheap. he is a cheap chichora just like saadibaba said. and to think that such an immature guy with the mental age of a 10 year old kid grows a beard and rubs around lecturing others on religion, how to live their lives etc - some joke that is!

To any England fans who were present in Faisalabad for the pitch vandalism incident that he committed, he will be forever known as "The Cheat Afridi."

To refresh your memory, he deliberately damaged the pitch during stoppage caused by what most people at the time thought was a bomb, but turned out to be an exploding gas cylinder.

What he did there was one of the worst acts of despicable cheating ever seen on a cricket field. I despise the man, and will never forgive him.

Because the English and Aussies never deliberately cheat, do they? I'm thinking of the recent bump catches fiasco in Australia, and Gerraint Jones claiming a very dodgy catch v Bangladesh in 2005. Bangladesh, FFS!

Cheating should never be condoned, and ICC should do everything to ensure it is stamped out. But currently, there is one rule for Aus/Eng, and another for everyone else.

I met Mr Afridi in c.2003 in Karachi. My cousin's friend, Tipu, claimed to be Afridi's childhood best pal, and said he could introduce us both to the big man. When we called his bluff, he took us to this big house in the suburbs, went inside for 5 minutes, and then told us Afridi bhai was not in.

We obviously laughed at his pish poor attempts in claiming he knew Afridi. He insisted on going to Afridi's house the next day, my cousin and I sat outside in the car, and the same thing happened again. Once again we laughed at him.

When he repeated this for a third time a few days later, we got a bit angry but relented at his request. Imagine our surprise when Tipu came out a few minutes later and invited us in! Afridi was sat there in a massive lounge, massive TV, got up and greeted my cousin and I as long lost brothers.

We were asked for tea, and Afrid went and made it himself. We talked about cricket, his heroes in Pak team, his lack of privacy. Really good bloke, and very friendly.

My only embarassment was that my no-class cousin, having drunk Afridi's tea and eaten his biscuits, then asked whether Afridi had been sent home from the recent exhibition tournament in Singapore as he had been caught with a prostitute in his bedroom...!

MT, please explain to me how someone can look cheap?

Personally I dont form judgements about players personalities, based on what I read in the press or hearsay or whart my uncle's best friends, neighbours long lost cousin has to say about a player whom he met years ago - I much prefer to meet the players themselves, speak to them and then form a judgement.

Saj, the looking cheap comment was in response to someone else saying that he "looked" cheap. Afridi can "look" like the classiest man since Asif Iqbal for all I care. actions speak louder than words or looks.

as far as press etc is concerned, the flight story was not carried by some Urdu tabloid paper. it was reported by major Pakistani newspapers. it has been confirmed by people on the flight who said that if it weren't for Saleem Malik and other senior players intervening to save Afridi from his own chichorapan, Afridi would have gotten a beating from the girl's brother.

either way, we all believe what we want to believe. I have plenty of reasons to have the opinion of Afridi that I have. Afridi was also involved with the girls in the room scandal along with Hasan Raza and M. Wasim. I've also heard Afridi's comments about multiple marriages which is a truly third class concept, imo. so, I definitely believe that he is one of two most chichora people in the team - Akhtar being the other one. others are free to disagree and form their own opinions.

I heard about the aeroplane incident and I’m certainly not here to vouch for or to give a character reference on Afridi. I can only convey what I saw and what happened to me when I met the guy.

I think if a similar thread was made for any player who has represented Pakistan, we’ll get a cross section of replies of folk who said the guy was very friendly and pleasant, whilst others will say that the guy was a jerk and not so pleasant.

In all seriousness, it depends on the time, place, and mood the person is in. Are me and you never in bad moods at any time of our lives? Of course we are and that can sometimes lead to unpleasantness with unknown and sometimes rude autograph-hunters. However. from the stories I have heard and read on this thread, he seems to be a nice, warm guy, who is not too boastful about his achievements and not too good for the common person. Just because you don't like his batting doens't mean you should slag off his character.

Bhai, even I´m not a huge fan of Shahid Afridi that does not mean I, or someone, should be telling others to like or to hate him. Majid is a nice guy who loves his cricket and is a huge fan of Afridi and the Pathanism that he possess. After all, everybody has his/her own choice, right :> ?

excactly, dhoni183 bhai has made a very good pont, i mean im not a huge mahendra singh dhoni fan, but i dont hate him, infact i dont hate any cricketer or any other person, i previously once said that vaughan iz my "least" favourite cricketer, but that doesn`t mean i hate him, hiz a very good person.

i know dhoni183 bhai iz a huuge m.s dhoni fan, and i respect that.

im not a shahid afridi fan for nothing,
a few questions for saadibaba,
who hit a century of 37 ballz at the age of 16?????
who mauled bandara for 32 runs in one over????
who became the first person to hit a 12 in a game of power cricket at the millenium stadium ???

Good points but we all know 16 = 19 :P

I always thought of Afridi as a classless person .so when he (saadibaba) said that ,didn't surprise me and very close to my belief .Not saying that my ''belief '' is the truth. But that description matched my impression about Afridi .It is just ''my ''impression . who cares ? :D

I don't know, may be I do, because you are such a quality poster, have read a lot of your posts, like it when you are defending your players for all the right reasons, you make sense whenever you post, and in my eyes, you have set some high standards, and to see you agreeing with such an imbalanced post, was a bit odd for me, but I completely understand that part as I don't have high regards for Kumble and Bhajji as well. :D ;-)

I´m a different type of guy, Majid. If anybody says anything against Mahendra Singh Dhoni it won´t effect me since I believe that everyone has his own opinion about every player but I wouldn´t want anyone asking me to stop admiring Dhoni. If anybody does he might receive an answer. I don´t demand respect for Dhoni but for my admiration. Same way if anyone has anything to say against Shahid Afrdi he is free to say but if somebody asks Majid to not to admire him anymore or anything which would sound like more of an attack on his fanism I wouldn´t apreciate that much, infact if required I will myself jump in.

Team's best ODI bowler in last 5 years...how was he in the last ODI series against India.

Guys, you have to got out of this celebrity worship mindset. Both Afridi and Akhtar failed to fulfill their full potential. They would have been kicked from any other "professional" team long time ago for their inconsistencies. Only in Pakistan can you have cricketers like him living off their celebrity and stupid media titles like "Boom Boom" and "The Beast".

If Afridi has any sense (which I know he does not) he should have retired long time ago and given a chance to youngsters. So please Afridi fans, grow up.

wow. you are definitely a genius. in fact, you're a bigger genius than I earlier thought.

so, you don't know who the person is in my avatar and I'm supposed to be the Indian as opposed to you being an Afridi-loving Pakistani (apparently that's the only kind of Pakistani there is).

have some shame man. learn something about your own country. learn who your heroes are. if you knew anything about your own country, you would know who the man in my avatar is and that he is widely considered a hero in Pakistan. yes, there are other heroes in Pakistan apart from Afridi and other cricketers. shocking isn't it?

no really I don't know who is this angry old man grinding his dentures.
Afridi is one of our country's biggest cricket hero not because of his personality but his cricket achievements of playing part in pak wins both inone day and test matches.
He is one of the biggest crowd pullers to the stadium
And as Michael Holding sais " Cricket is not Cricket without afridi"
and one of the most versetile match winning cricketer.

and the man in my avatar is Talat Hussein - an outstanding journalist, a man of integrity and a great patriot who has repeatedly put his own life in danger to educate Pakistanis about their rights and how they are being usurped. he has played a lead role in a struggle which will see great men (like Talat, other upstanding journalists, Justice Wajihuddin and other retired judges, Aitzaz Ahsan and other lawyers, Justice Chauhdry and others superior court) immortalized. but I'm sure you being a Pakistani knew all about that?

of the cricketers I've seen Wasim was the greatest. I love him as a cricketer. however, even he is not good enough to polish Talat's shoes as far as being a Pakistani hero is concerned. I guess genius doesn't provide common sense and a sense of perspective.

I dont think anyone is worshipping him here. The question was, have you ever met the guy and a number of us have explained the circumstances around us meeting him and what happened.

I think some folk in this thread who dont like the guy, are obviously grinding the axe, even though they havent met the guy, not even in their dreams.

Great stuff Saj, enjoyable read!

I dont have any axe to grind. Its not about me liking or disliking the guy, its about how he plays, how his fans tend to forget how useless he is.

"even though they havent met the guy, not even in their dreams."

that sentence just explains how you look at Afridi....he is a guy, just like you and me...don't make him into a celebrity god.. please.....thats what you guys do....hype him into something beyond a cricketer....judge him by his performance, not his hype

I think you are misunderstanding the question that is the title of this thread.

May I remind you that it is "Have you ever met Shahid Afridi ?". Its not about me or you giving character references, or his cricketing ability, or what the fans think of him, its regarding who has met him and what happened.

Met him once at the London airport when the Pak team were returning from Toronto at the back of a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Indian team in the Sahara cup... both him and Inzi were walking around the airport... they were pretty damn rude in the way they came accross to me and my dad. There was no one else at the airport who even recognized them besides us 2 and they came off as pretty arrogant then.. although that was a long time ago in 1997. Saqlain, Saeed Anwar and hasan raza (very very young then) all came off as the friendliest people on Earth though..

Thats the problem with most Pakistani players that what you often see is not what you get!.Fame gets to their heads very easily then they start considering others as inferior creatures!
Got to hand it to the many footballers i've met that they've always got time for a chat and are well mannered.Perhaps its a cultural thing.

I think some of the attitude also has to do with fans. I have seen a clip where some fans were demanding and not waiting and I have seen clips where fans politely wait. Ofcourse the celebrities and heroes do have to take care of the fans but sometimes the fans can be rude too.

I have never asked for autograph or picture with a celebrity and I don't know anyone personaly who has. So I have not heard of any rudeness, good boy behaviour or anything good or bad about them

so what you are saying is the truth, and what the rest of us who have also met him is rubbish then ? Thats an interesting theory !

You wrote "He had a group of "pathan looking" young guys with him, probably his cousins and they all looked like a bunch of "chichoras". He had no grace, no class and no personality. He looked like an arrogant and fame addicted cheapster".

So you worked all that out without even speaking to him or any of the people he was with - amazing.
