LAHORE: President of the Pakistan football federation and federal minister Faisal Saleh Hayat has stressed that merit would be the only criteria for the selection of the Pakistan football team for the home series against India in June.
During a meeting in Lahore Faisal Saleh Hayat directed the federation Secretary Arshad Khan Lodhi and all its directors to ensure that the selection of the football team for the series against India would be done on merit and no laxiness in this regard would be tolerated.
He said that the Indian football team is coming to Pakistan after 12 years and this is the first test series between the two countries that’s why Pakistan should bring its most tough side on the ground. Pakistan actually won the South Asian Games Gold medal in football. They beat India 1-0 in the final in Islamabad. I'll try and dig up some pictures of the game.

Today Britsh Born Pakistani Football Player Shakeel Ahmed had his first training session at the Pakistan Football Camp in Quetta.
Shakeel, as we reported earlier he had several injuries, is bothered still by some injuries and these keep bothering him also at the training.
But Shakeel promised to try not letting down all the Pakistani Football Fans which are counting on him!
Thanks Shakeel Allah bless YOU!
===============================================
Here is an earlier post about him
=========================
25 Years old British Pakistani midfielder Shakeel Ahmed will have his big day in the Pakistan Football Camp in Quetta today(monday).
He had a positive meeting with Col. Mujahidullah Tareen yesterday night and Chief Selector Col. Younus Changezi will pick up Shakeel from the Quetta Airport on Monday.
Shakeel's chances are big to become the first British Pakistani to play for the Pakistan National Football Team. If Shakeel Ahmed gets selected he will play in the 3 match Indo-Pak Football Series in June 2005.
All the best from FootballPakistan.com...
A small profile about Shakeel:
Name: Shakeel Ahmed
Nickname: SHAK
Date of Birth: 30.12.1979
Age: 25
Nationality: British and Pakistani
Place of Residence: Newcastle upon Tyne, England, UK
Height: 6ft (183 cm)
Weight: 77kg (12 stones)
Club: Out of contract
Previous Clubs: Fulham FC, Charlton Athletic FC, Gateshead FC
Position: Defensive Midfielder
Other Positions: Sweeper, Attacking Midfielder
Recent History: Injury problems have been a major problem for Shakeel Ahmed during the past few seasons. A few are highlighted below:
Stress fractures on both legs specifically on the fibula.
A broken toe on his preferred right toe.
Stomach problems resulting in weakness and for a time to give up the game to concentrate on recovery.
Attributes: Shakeel Ahmed's attributes are as follows:
Speed is Shakeel's major attribute - he is able to do the 100 metres in a time of 10.53 seconds which translates into his game.
Shakeel has excellent physical and mental strength making him a formidable team player.
His tackling is precise therefore allowing him to break up opposition moves.
Shakeel’s ball control and touch is superb allowing him to carry the ball forward and to start attacks.
Stamina and strength are leading parts of the jigsaw that is Shakeel Ahmed.
He is extremely versatile as to what position he plays in meaning he can slot in for any outfield player.
Ambitions: To play for the Pakistani national team and to progress the team from its current position allowing all Pakistani’s to have pride in their football.
Notes: Shakeel will be talking to a number of clubs over the summer as he is out of contract.
Those include clubs in Spain and England.
Comment by Gateshead FC Coach:
Having watched Shakeel play on numerous occasions I can sincerely say he should be a great monument to Pakistani football in the future inshallah.
His speed with the ball, his versatility in position, his strength of purpose and power as well as his stamina allowing Shakeel to run continually box to box should see shakeel explode on to the Pakistani football set up.
The experience he has picked up at clubs such as Charlton and Fulham, surrounded by players who are giants of the modern game will only help influence a player who has not yet reached his prime. Experience on the global stage testing Shakeels ability, tenacity and mental resolve will in my belief bring out the best in this formidable yet skilful player.
Shakeels all-round game is down to following a practice regime in his youth called 'total football'. A regime very similar taught to both Ajax (the giants of Dutch football) and those learnt by the giants of Brazilian football. By playing in every position across the field Shakeel's tactical ability to read the game, to be half a yard quicker not only over the ground but also in his mind has given Shakeel the versatility to be the playmaker, the sweeper, the defender and the striker on the football field.
Whether tackling or passing the ball inch perfect over 40 yards, shooting with either foot I have had the pleasure of seeing shakeel play the game over many seasons before and after the injuries that have plagued him in recent times. Everyone here at Gateshead FC can only agree that it is in no small part due to Shakeel that we were promoted in our winning 2001-2002 season. When in the final game of the season shakeel scored a hat trick, finishing the game with a 30 yard free kick in the top right hand corner of the goal. For those accomplishments both as an individual as well as a leader on the pitch for the whole team, instilling a sense of pride and camaraderie Gateshead football club fully supports shakeel in his new endeavour.
Knowing Shakeel as I do both personally and professionally, I understand how much it means to him winning his first cap for his country, to wear the Pakistan jersey and exert his body to the highest standards to ensure that Pakistani football continually excels and develops. And with the presence of Shakeel in this setup I can only see this outcome occurring.
However, modesty is one of Shakeels main assets as a man, a Muslim and a footballer. Never will you hear Shakeel utter a word of praise or accomplishment upon himself, reserving his gratitude for those around him. It is for these higher qualities of man and not what occurs on the football pitch that we are glad shakeel was able to play at this club before his injuries and hopefully after, now that he is coming back to match fitness
On behalf of all the coaches, players and fans here at Gateshead FC we wish you the best of luck.

Yeah he is BUT for some reason there hasnt been much hoo ha about him!
Michael Chopra who played for newcastle has always been claimed as the first Asian in the premiership - he is half indian BUT he hasnt made the impact that was expected of him yet!
I wudnt classify him as asian cos i went to school with him and he was white through and through - there was nothing asian about him!

I doubt we can ever develop a good footy team since not many people are itnerested in it in pak..
I bet half of all PP'ers can beat the pak national team..
the Pak national team toured England a few years back.
Lost against Coventry 2-0. John Aloisi scored both goals.

lol adi wouldn't go that far mate.
I know an English chap who is in Lahore these days and he has a fair amount of experience in football. He was at the 3rd game and says our stiker Mohammed Essa would easily make a good conference level player and maybe an average 3rd division player. Our standard is fairly low but tours like this will raise interest in the game, bring in a bit of exposure for our players, bring in sponsorship and investment. Maybe in 10-15 years time we can have a team capable of qualifying for the world cup which would be simlpy amazing!
