Pakistan resume at 22/0....

i for one just cannot wait for it begin!!!
hope the weather will be warm and sunny...i also hope windies show real fight in the field and bowl fast and to the best of their ability...but all batsman to contribute and score big!!! prefer for us to make big runs against bowlers who are giving 100pct and that too against guys bowling arnd 90 mph because that will show that our batsman are progressing and doing better and better with each outing! better this then a pointless 100 against a toothless attack!
afridi vs edwards (or any windies bowler) is a tentalising prospect!
Guys - I know many will be reading this but spare a few moments to pray for the souls of the dead in the Islamabad blast - May ALLAH forgive their sins and grant them a place in Jannah, Ameen ! ( full story of the blast is in TimePass) Thanks.

Afridi needs to play big shots to survive. He needs to chance his arm.
If hegot out getting squared up I would be disappointed. If on the other hand a full stroke went to hand then I would say bad luck.
Why on earth did Woolmer/YK send (1) the most unstable batsman in the universe (or in light of the M-theory, universes) (2) to face the fastest fit bowling attack in cricket today, (3) bowling with the new ball, (4) with only 4 overs of play left in the day and (5) - with 2 specialist openers in the team already!?!
Noddy, who in management had the massive stroke?!
OHH here we go, if he smackd a hundred ud b the oppositw shut up and watch the game
If he makes a hundred all of us will enjoy the innings, but u can't get away from the fact that afridi is not equipped to play up the order in test matches.
I can understand using him as an opener as the situation dictates((like against india in the third test), but sending him in yesterday when there were only 4 overs left was illogical.

Was that a defensive stroke?
From cricinfo:
"4.3 Edwards to Shahid Afridi, OUT: Superb ball, full and late outswing,
squared Afridi who did not seem to have the technique to handle
such a ball, edged to third slip and Devon Smith holds a good
catch low"
I think you can visualize exactly what happened as we've seen it many times before.

I think he got out to some sort of a defensive stroke.
Looked ugly.
It was a great delivery by Edwards
Could someone explain then what is the point of Afridi being down the order?
So that he can have his way with the bowlers bowling with the old ball - ie massacre them. The decision to open with him yesterday is very peculiar

Some people always find a way to complain...people get over it...earlier everyone was happy that he is opening and now this...give me a break
BTW, how in heck WI attack the "Fastest and Fittest attck" in cricket...last time I checked, WI have lost gazillion One Dayers in a row and not to forget the numerous test defeats too :O :)?

Here is what I wrote before the start of play:
"
In my opinion, if he does two of the following things he has a better chance of lasting longer:
1) Avoid playing defensively on off stump. He should look to go hard at the ball on off stump.
2) Try to hot straighter to avoid those leading edges. In fact, part of his resurgence now is that he does look to hit over cover and mid off more than he used to
"
His defensive play on off stump is low percentage batting. Hitting through the line would be much better for him.
just brings up the question of who is making these decisions. Is it YK? Bob? even Inzi? Do I hear someone say "the bookies"?

Monsee in my Afridi thread, you'll see i posted this same paragraph last night
And i didn't say "Fastest and Fittest attack" - i said "Fastest fit attack - ie NOT Akhtar and Sami. And their defeats have absolutely nothing to do with how fast they are.

It was a great delivery by Edwards
DM, paradoxically, if I were to ask Afridi to open, I would ask him to play even more attacking shots - especially on off stump.
He is likelier to survive longer, and is likelier to get more runs.
His defensive play on off stump - getting squared on - is low percentage. But with his physical strength, hitting through the line, sometimes getting hold of it, other times getting an edge will be a better percentage.

I agree but it's test cricket and how long he lasts matters quite a bit. With a new ball and a good bowler up front (though there are few in the world left these days) it just becomes a tad difficult.
Not asking him to open may be a good option. After all we are going to face Harmison and Flintoff soon.
Agreed FP - especially to fuller deliveries - as was the one that dismissed him
It's such a sick feeling seeing Afridi getting dismissed - Afridi for 200 in 2nd innings :D

So how do you feel at the moment. I wonder who you would have batting for us right now in this situation.

LOL.... Gambitt, first chance of bashing Yasir and you pounce on him... he is still better than the pathetic Taufeeq of whom you are such a big fan...
Yasir was beaten by pace not swing and by the current fastest bowler in the world. Taufeeq was making Pathan and Balaji look like Holding and Marshall :)
In ICC trophy, Yasir played the swing best when all the other batsmen were looking like a fish out of water against the slow medium WI swing bowlers.
By the way I only support Yasir just because he should be given a fair chance and not played in one game and dropped in the next.. that can play havoc with any batsman's confidence ...
I never said he is a master batsman..in fact.. If we can find a better batsman to open in Tests with Butt, I will be the first one to support him...

Yasir definitely looked very jittery and low on confidence...
if you are under the chopping block every game and on top of that the bowling conditions are this good... Your confidence will be very low as a batsman...
In any case, poor innings by Yasir... whatever the case, the bottom line is he needs to be mentally tough and deal with the pressure that is on him to perform and not worry if it is justified or not...

Bazid is not a opener I think. Noddy has said the same many times as well.

Otherwise he can say bye bye to his career very soon...
when toufeeq was brought back in the team and given his chance in the Mohali test... the same could be said about him that he was low in confidence .. had been shafted by the selectors etc..
FACT is simple .. both these guys have major flaws .. that come out after a while when bowlers start exploiting their weaknesses. Anyways .. i don't wan't an argument in this .. my last two cents on this!!!
The chances will be there for everyone who wants to grab it!! None have shown the hunger and capability YET!!!

Yup thass why I said Yasir needs to perform no matter whatever pressure etc. is on him... no excuses!
But the problem is where is that opener who can partner with Butt???... until we stumble upon somebody... we need to give Yasir a continued run....
If Yasir fails after given a fair chance and we cannot find a new batsman.. I would try Razzaq at open in Tests :) To me he is a much better choice than Afridi to open in Tests.
Also I fail to see why Malik is not tried as opener when we already have Younus settled at #3 and Asim Kamal at #6. Perhaps that is the next step to do now.
It would be ideal for us if Malik and Butt become our test and ODI openers and then Malik drops to #3 in ODI situations when Afridi is opening.

very poor session for Pakistan. These two now need to get a big partnership going. Asim Kamal has done it in the past......perhaps not always when we have really needed him to. Now is the chance for him to do that.

So lets see the dismissals so far:
AFRIDI
4.3 Edwards to Shahid Afridi, OUT: Superb ball, full and late outswing, squared Afridi who did not seem to have the technique to handle such a ball, edged to third slip and Devon Smith holds a good catch low
YASIR
12.3 Edwards to Yasir Hameed, OUT: Sooner or later it seemed certain, ball came in and Hameed caught at the crease, tried a prod and inside edges onto off stump
SALMAN
14.1 King to Salman Butt, one run, dropped! A casual drive more of a swish and ball edged to Sarwan and dives in front of Lara at first slip and dropped it Was an easy catch headed into Lara's midriff
19.6 Collymore to Salman Butt, OUT: drives a ball on the off with zero foot movement and edges to Browne, a little strange as Butt normally has good footwork
BAZID
27.6 Collymore to Bazid Khan, OUT: another ball in the off stump slot, Bazid plays outside it and its a thin inside edge to 'keeper Browne as Pakistan's troubles continue with a wicket before lunch
Do we need to hire a batting coach now in addition to a bowling coach??
Shan's comments are so pathetic they don't warrant a responce.
God forbid if Shan's father was seriously ill then maybe he would have a different perspective than hitting a ball with a stick.

I agree zorawar bhai each dismissal was disappointing to say the least! But afridi getting out at the 3rd ball of the day was the worse! Afridi had no idea how to play Edwards at all!!! At 96-4 we need patnerships. Razzaq and kamal will provide more batting but i have a felling we will see rana ball to Gayle today....I hope i am wrong. I think we need to get atleast 200 more runs if we want to win this match
yes, 300 is a minimum. If we get to 300 the Windies have a tendancy to collapse in their second innings so we will have a decent chance. Their bowlers are less effective in the 2nd innings as well.

Jus tshows how muchw e need Inzi, this is pathetic, but I had a feeling Widnies will do well. They usually do decent in the first test, we just must pray for a second innings collapse, similar to Jamiaca(Harmison 7-12). It will take some miracle bowling to win this match.
